"Why do you have so many knives!" how many have heard this?

Did you read the post I was referring to? It was the one SGT wrote after he quoted you.

Sorry. I didn't understand that you were referring to ammo.

In California, all ammo sales are recorded and a matter of record. Therefore, you could say that your privacy is compromised starting at point of sale. Even so, I agree with your idea that discretion is important. Sarge's point had to do with public perception.

I typically relate it to bird watching - or birding- which my wife understands. I go to the ends of the earth to see (collect) different birds and I collect a few knives too.

I don't have much in the way of fancy knives, though I've been gifted a few nice ones. But I do have quite an accumulation of serviceable knives acquired over the past 50+ years. Possibly a couple hundred. Just the way things go.

Some people do wonder about my 60 or so hammers. I just point out that a real hammer guy like Scotty Fulton in Kentucky has over 12,000 hammers. The good thing about hammers is you don't have to sharpen them.

I haven’t gotten that question about knives yet. I do hear it about motorcycles. I guess I’d give the same answer:
“One is too many and a dozen is not enough”

My wife and I have a rule when it comes to buying things. You have to answer both of these questions:

Do you want it?

Can you pay for it without using a credit card?

If we can answer "yes" to both, it doesn't matter what it is. (Within reason of course. We could afford a lion if we really wanted one but the rule applies more to impulse purchases ;) )

Anyone else that asks why we do what we do or buy what we buy gets a "None-ya d*mn business - That's why."

I say i collect them and if they ask me why so many i say "it's like a stamp collection, do you know many stamp collectors with 3 stamps in their stamp collection?" My fiancee asked me the same question when we where dating as well and i said " i could go out and spend it on beer and hookers but i prefer pocket knives"....she thought that was a wise decision. The only problem i have is that she tells her work collegues and girlfriends that i collect and they tend to ask her if i'm a serial killer or something! I tell her not to tell anyone but her mouth tends to travel faster then her brain sometimes. She has 3 pink Spyderco's of her "own" atm and she always carries one of them in her purse.

What unique issues do you face?
I believe women's jeans pockets are way smaller then men's jeans pockets....and most dresses don't have pockets or the weight of the knife makes the dress look asymetric. My fiancée is German and i bought a nice trachtenmesser for my lederhosen. She felt it was not ok that the Dirndl she has has no pocket for a nice knife!

My GF collects knives. She inherited some when her father died, and now she can’t get off the train. She likes Buck fixed blades, and when the factory tour ended in the store, she spent more than I did (and I spent quite a bit).

We go to swap meets and yard sales in the summer, and occasionally while she’s looking at a knife some knucklehead will try to spin her a line of BS about it. In the right mood, she’ll play dumb just to see how far the BS will go, or say “Well, what knife do you carry?” Kinda funny to watch, especially if the knucklehead isn’t carrying a knife and she’s carrying three…
