Why I rejected a envelope.. How not to ship a Busse TGLB...

I've shipped plenty of big fixed blades through the mail in envelopes. I wrap the entire knife in double/triple layers of cardboard, then wrap an insane amount of tape around it,then after it's put in the envelope wrap every inch on the outside with tape also. But all those blades were under $150. If i were shipping a $500 knife it would be going in a box. I can't believe this seller would ship the knife out this way. The amount of tape lacking on the package and not putting insurance on it made me laugh. This person owes you alot of money the post office will not compensate them for. A harsh lesson learned. Very harsh.

I'm starting to feel like members who continue to ship anything of value in a envelope be banned. A lot of drama and heartache stem from some frugal fool trying to save a few cents. Another member on my ignore list

my belief is that a few apologies are in order. The seller did nothing illegal, much less inappropriate.

You may mean "buyer".

I received a used Kershaw Blur earlier this year that was just dropped in an envelope. Being spring-loaded, it popped open in the envelope and caused my letter carrier to bleed all over my porch. Fortunately, he's a swell guy and we got past it. I'm going to give him a Spyderco Cat for Christmas. Irony.

So just to pile on, the box of any shipped knife should be entombed in packing tape like King Tutankhamun so that its almost impossible for the buyer to open even with a knife. The package will either make it to the destination intact or it will get lost in transit, but it sure won't open up on its own somewhere along the way. Rock on.

I was another member who deemed you as a scammer! It just made too much sense! I'm so glad you posted your side of the story along with excellent pictures and a timeline. I would have done the same thing you did and declined the package after taking pictures in front of the postal vehicle. Unfortunately for the seller he's out $500 but that's his fault and an expensive mistake.

I remember LK shipping Busse in envelopes. I'm 100% sure that subject has been completely covered here on BFC. Has USMC seen this thread since he shut his own down? He was last active today at 12:33 so it's possible he hasn't. I'd think he definitely needs to make an appearance here!

This isn't even a rookie mistake. It's called not using common sense. It's being lazy and careless. Many many years ago I used to be into airsofting and would frequent and airsoft forum. As you can imagine there were other such individuals packing airsoft guns in such a manner. As expected, many of these packages did not reach their destination. To anyone who has ever purchased something from me (from the few sales post I've had) I have always packaged extremely securely and insured the package. I typically wrap said item with bubble wrap, insert it into the box and fill all the gaps with a lot of newspaper to insure that it does not move around. A package that makes an audible noise when shook makes it more likely to be stolen. That knife is very likely gone and in the hands of someone else. The seller is entirely at fault and has to soak up the cost. Times like this, it's smart to insure a package.

On another note many people are so quick to jump the gun and lay blame without much of any consideration of other possibilities or giving the benefit of the doubt. It's so easy to suddenly switch sides and type sorry, but many of these individuals are the one to jump the gun every time a similar situation pops up. One of the reasons why my signature has had that same line for 2 years.

I received a Rattle Hawk in an envelope. Blade, beard spike and handle had all pierced the envelope. Then the nice, unsuspecting lady at the post handed it to me, the beard and primary hawk edge were poking out enough to sever a tendon or major vein! The shippers response was that he taped on a rubber protector. It was still in the nm package, no longer attached to the hawk by the measly piece of tape.

I chewed him out, and the response was it was good enough for him to ship ( basically).

Literally a strand or two of tape. The package looked like a an angry polar bear, with a Freddie Krueger glove tore it all up. I can't believe someone was not seriously injured!

I think the seller committed a senseless rookie mistake. Do this long enough and you will always ship knives heavily tapped full insurance and Signature required. Live and learn I guess! Well done buyer for posting all this info I would be aggravated if I ever received a knife in that shale err even an empty package!!!!

Something that big and heavy needs to be in a box, packed in with extra paper or what have you so that it can't move around in the box and the box taped around all the edges with shipping tape. Finally, due to the price must get signature confirmation and insurance.

...Update... I just want to tell everybody that I got the $500 refund back from Paypal.

This is just a bad situation. He's out $500, I was being labeled as a scammer and for what.
To save a few bucks on Insurance and a Signature Confirmation.

I do hope USPS can locate that TGLB, because that is a major hit.

All the best to everybody..

Good! It is a bad situation all around but props to USMC for doing the right thing. Live and learn.

That'll do it. :( Sad to see another quality knife lost unnecessarily, not to mention the financial loss...

Not that I'd ever consider trying, but how the heck did a TLGB fit?

Probably used a legal flat rate envelope. 15" instead of the regular flat rate that is 12" i'm guessing. But even then quite a tight fit.

And now we have "the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say.
Yet another example of how to keep an open mind and get all the facts that you can, before calling people scammers.
With more facts AND pictures, this story has now come about full circle. The buyer is obviously not at fault and the seller now looks ......not too good.
Those of you who were calling the buyer a scammer hopefully have learned a lesson....and owe the buyer an apology. We'll see if any will do it. This mob mentality around here bothers me at times.

Perfectly stated, Gastonknife!

As usual, many of these GBU thread's seem to have some big surprises, when the other party fills in the blanks. I think that I probably would have handled this situation exactly as you did, HARDTYMEZ (though Paypal), had an expensive USPS envelope arrived without the expensive Busse that was supposed to be inside.

What an expensive lesson for USMC to have to learn. Hopefully the USPS will find & return his knife, although I think that is highly unlikely.

Thank you for posting your side to this transaction, HARDTYMEZ; had USMC been a little more forthcoming, maybe more of the member's would have kept an open mind... I'm glad that Paypal was so quick to refund your money. Best of luck to the both of you, moving forward.

This is interesting because of all the knives I've shipped yours mysteriously dissappeared. The package was heavily taped. It's obvious that it was tampered with. Again I apologize for shipping in an envelope but I shipped others like that. Mind u I didn't just drop it in. All the blades I've shipped are tightly wrapped. As for all u fellas saying you are going to add me to ur Block list it really doesn't matter. I'm manning up to my mistake so tough poop. Lesson learned on my part. Like I said before in my other thread, I'm new to the forum and shipping items.
