Why is the ESEE 5 not as popular as...

I think part of reason the BK-2 is the most popular and the ESEE-5 isn't, in their respective line-ups, is the competition in those line-ups. Look at the Becker line-up. You have the BK-2, the BK-7, the BK-9, the BK-11, the BK-14, and just recently, the BK-5(?... the Magnum Camp). Out of those, the BK-2 is the best general-purpose camp knife, which is why I have it. At least IMO. Some people gravitate more toward the -7, which was somewhat of a draw for me as well, but the shorter design won out for several reasons.

Now, look at the ESEE lineup: -3, -4, -5, -6, Izula, Izula II, Junglas, and Lite Machete. There are a slew of general purpose blades there, any one of which can do an excellent job of general purpose knife, but the 5 kinda sticks out as the brawler, more specialized, and seems to take a hit against cutting because the rest of the line-up are such great cutters in their ranges.

Searching for a knife particularly robust and tough in the 5-inch range, in the absence of the rest of the line-ups, I would bet the ESEE-5 would be more even with the BK-2, with the choice falling to specific features of each knife, but generally balancing out.

Me, I chose the BK-2 over the ESEE-5 for several reasons. One being cost, and that not the least. Second being the grip shapes, and that just BARELY the BK-2. If the BK-2 had the same bit of integral guard extending below the scales that the BK-7 does, I probably would have gone with either the BK-7 (which I think would be a mistake for me), or the ESEE-5 (cost not withstanding). Just the miniscule a difference would have made the difference between the two for me, quite possible, because quite frankly, the devil is in the details 99% of the time.

Anyway, I've rambled, and probably should have read the entire thread before I said anything. Again....:o

Oh and sorry Moose it doesn’t work at Chippendales. :D

Yeah, I know, Jeff called me when he found out. He didn't want me looking stupid or anything. I was all dressed and ready to go, but after he called, I just climbed in the shower and kept rockin' back and forth saying "No, it can't be."

Enough about me, hows your orientation coming along?

To me cost is the biggest factor (plus the BK2 been a staple of the Becker lineup for what 15-20 years plus or minus 5 years ) and if the BK2 had micarta scales(came with) then it would put the BK2 close to Benjamin in the cost department.

Actually, 26-27yrs, I called Ethan a couple of days ago to ask, so I could make sure. He made it in either 84-85.

Yes, the micarta does add some money and weight, by the way, to the BK2. BUT, one set of micarta hanles can be changed from one blade to the other, so, in essence, one pair of micarta for all your Becker knives. Not so much with the ESEE5.:D

:D Reason I added the plus or minus 5 years ,
Scale swap 3/4 - 5/6 - izula/eskabar

You know Moose that large BK's collection I had.... alot of BK1-2-3-4-6-7-9-10 ('s)
they all felt the same,so it was hard to know which one I really needed,to pack the BK1 or the 9 or opted for the BK6 ? BK2 or the BK10 ?
So I sold'em and now I just buy the one I miss ;)

Which one was that? I got a Reinhardt Kukri in the mail today, and I'm on top of the world. I've owned and used everyone that was commercially made, and until a few months ago, I had never seen or used an RK before. Once I did, I began the search for one, and actually, one found me. Interesting.

Thinking back about all the knives I've loved and lost, my current lineup is by far my favorite of all. I have in my possession, BK?(RK, never issued a #), BK Proto Necker, 2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, AH1, ESEE3, ESEE4, Mora BC Triflex (HIGHLY Recommended), CS Kukri 'chete, FBF Hunter (:D, my first custom), and various folder from Kershaw, CS, Opinel, Case, Spyderco, etc. It still takes me 30 damn minutes to pick out what I want to take out and play with.

Damn, lifes hard.:D:D:D

I havent used a bk2 yet, but i think alot has to do with price. You can get a bk2 between 60-70 dollars and a esee 5 is over double. with that said i own a esee5 and not a bk2 and dont regret buying it one bit.

I'm probably as big an ESEE fan as you are a Beckerhead...but that's a darn good point. Good thing I own an ESEE-5 and a BK2 and can just enjoy them both!

I really like the knives that both companies make, but I been a Becker fan for over a decade.

I found ESEE and really like what Jeff an Mike and everyone has going on here.

Jeff, Mike, and Ethan are some of best people I have had the pleasure to meet and get to know.

Well said Moose.

It's nice when folks of varying tastes/brands can give one another a good ribbing now and again and not get all butthurt about it. This thread has been hilarious!

There's so many good knife makers out there and we've all got our favorites and there's nothing wrong with that at all...in fact...that's normal I would say. In all seriousness, it's just refreshing to be a part of a forum where people can look past the "brands" though and have really good communication and for that matter a good time! Try going to a few firearms forums. :barf:

In the end, we all love knives and that's all that matters.

just thought I'd contribute a post to make this even LONGER then it needs to be..

Becker is just Better !!! its a 'B' thang, you wouldn't understand..

"now back to the original kool-aid and off to the corner"

I reckon so

You know... the bottom line is it all comes down to taste. As far as actual need? Most of our needs, for most of all of us, could really be served by the crappy steak knives that are provided at the local Outback. Taste vs. finances.

Man I've been looking all over the damn place for,"Love potion #9" since being single again, then you jerks have been squirreling the secret formula to getting ass in this thread all along? :D

Gonna order me a 5 and some Aquavelva.

Hey ESEE people! First off I don't own an ESEE knife. Some day I'm sure. I think they are nice looking blades, the rants and reviews are enuf to sell them to me and the cult following is more than impressive. For me there is two reasons why I love the BK2. First off is the price. I purchase on average 2 knives a year and I try to keep the price around $50. My money goes first to my kids then to the wife. Ain't much left over for me. :grumpy: Second is that the BK2, not counting the neckers, is the shortest of them all. If there was a 3" or 4" inch BK then I'm sure I would have went with one of those. Also the BK2 history is a strong one. All these factors means it's a no-brainer. I do like the ESEEs tho. One day I will join the pack.

Dont waste money on your family man, knives should always come first....

Like I have said before I think both ESEE AND BECKER are just excellent to have, I would
be lost without these two knife companies.....

Thank you guys for being here for me and the rest of us, I'm going to cry now (bye)
