Why is there sometimes snobbery against Cold Steel knives? They are great!

Nice chip LOL, I use my few cold steel knives as beater knives and beat the shit out of them and never had any edge or lock problems!Wish they switched to vg1 instead using aus8!!!!!!!!

its not an opinion, its fact. certain steels hold up better than others. Even a poorly treated s30v can outlast AUS8

That chip must have been done torquing a screw or something, that is not normal use for ANY knife. That knife (I had one) has a super thin hollow grind and I'd never attempt to twist something with the edge. This kind of damage would happen to most similarly ground knives if applying a twisting motion with edge regardless of steel or heat treat.

Not in my experience. I had a high dollar knife in S30V that was treated a bit too soft, and it required sharpening almost after every use. It was around 57.5 Rc, S30V really stands out at around 59+Rc.

I had one that was worse than that, around 55 RC..... Oh that was bad....

I'll echo the general sentiment in this thread in that I use Cold Steel knives as beater knives. I really love the Tri-Ad lock, and the AUS8 steel doesn't really bother me on the Recon, AK-47 and American Lawman lines, as they're not terribly expensive and they get the job done. I'll also echo the sentiment that the marketing is just plain goofy and far too mall-ninjaesque. I got a kick out of their videos in early college whilst tipsy on the grog, but after getting better acquainted with other (better) manufacturers, I just think their videos are silly. Who needs to stab through a car door?

However, I absolutely love my Recon Tanto and SRK in Carbon V. I've used those for chopping and batoning like you wouldn't believe, and I've been extremely impressed with the edge retention.

TL;DR - Their marketing is goofy, but buy their knives if you like them.

Well now, at that level it was worse than one of those cheap Paki Crapmascus knives. I'm sure those would have held a better edge. :D

And it wasn't a cheap knife either... Like the one you had.....

Oh yeah it sucked.....

That is disheartening, dropping a 3-4 bills on something and have it perform worse than a gas station counter knife. That is just not right ona many levels. My experience with AUS8 has been good for the most part. VG1 would be nice to try on the Recon1 CP though.

Should have clarified that the phrase thats a fact ended with the sentence. The 2nd part is an opinion that from my experience is true. 3-4 bills could get you a sebenza or a ZT or a custom

Sorry about my bad English...

The knife from the picture was used to "chop" some pine wood from 1 by 3 inch pice - it's a possesion of a friend from Bulgarian blade forum. Until this problem the knife served very good 2 years.

I have very good experians with SRK in carbon V and San Mai, san mai trail master, master hunter in carbon v, bushmen and pocket bushmen - all of these knives are good and in eash category - work horses, but here we are standing in front of a bad heat treatmen in my opinion - it's rear but it hapens...

here is my custom carbpn V SRK

Things do happen like that from time to time, but the manufacturer made it right so in the end it worked out.

While I do agree with the questionable marketing practices Cold Steel does in fact make good knives and sells them at reasonable prices. And if you want to experience the strength if the Tri-Ad lock then like it or not you will have to buy either a Demko custom at $600 + or a $60 Cold Steel.

I was looking through the CS stuff to see what might appeal to me and i noticed they make a Sjambok. Any company that makes a weapon thats only historical significance is in how many times it was used to beat black people to death and further enforce the apartheid can go to @!%* as far as i'm concerned. silly advertising and insulting other knife companies is nothing on the ethics front compared to making a reproduction Sjambok. This is a real reason to never give them a single penny.

Are you serious or were you high when you wrote this drivel? The sjambok is a traditional cattle and herding whip used for centuries in sub saharan Africa. It was undoubtedly misused during apartheid - does that justify imputing that Cold Steel somehow supports or favors apartheid? Do you also boycott Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford and the Indiana Jones movies? After all, Indy uses a bullwhip which was also used against slaves and ex slaves both pre and post civil war - obviously, a celebration of both slavery and the KKK.

And the only company I've ever seen Cold Steel insult is Strider. Any ethical person would and should shun that scumbag.

I don't wan't to get in an argument on a public forum but let me elaborate a bit. Context is everything. It would be one thing for a company to make a historical reproduction of a sjambok (even though from my understanding it doesn't have much historical significance outside of the apartheid). But that's not what CS did. They made a modernized and further weaponized version of it. It's important to remember that cold steel is a Weapons company, not some sort of reproduction company and that the only significant time the sjambok was used as a weapon was during the apartheid.

This is just the way I feel about it. I'm not going to go out of my way to boycott cold steel or anything but from now on I'm going to associate the name with a company that thinks sticks used for racial oppression are cool.
