Why is there sometimes snobbery against Cold Steel knives? They are great!

Wrong! Check the specs on what an axis lock can hold vs. a triad. Also think about it for a moment kid, a metal bar slips down in the way against metal spacers. The blade physically can't close. Triad is a friction lock that under enough presssure can fail.

Sorry, but you are not going to win this debate. It is well known that the Tri-Ad Lock is the strongest folding knife locking system available in production knives.

And I ain't no kid. I'm 37 years old.

But you're still wrong, no matter how old you are. Especially if we're talking about the Adamas. It really doesn't matter, there really isn't much reason to be putting that much reverse pressure on the blade.

Toot, toot!!! All aboard the train to gettingoldandboringsville! Did we forget to mention the bridge is out? Whoops!

and I can say VG10, elmax and ZDP hold their edge longer. Elmax is very tough and would hold up like aus8 with 3-4x the edge retention...

I dont think ANYBODY has needed or applied 500 lbs of force on the spine of a knife unless they are deadlifters prying with the spine for leverage, or if you hammered the knife on the tree and stood on it being the size of Lynn Thompson.
Anything that can withstand 200lbs + I would classify as hard use cause nobody exerts that much pressure down on the handle, even in the military. You dont hear of striders failing, and they can probably take 'only' about 200 lbs of force, know why? Because there isnt ONE single cutting task that needs that amount of spine force

Compression lock and axis lock give the triad a run for its money. Hell, even high tolerance lockbacks probably do.

If you look beyond the super strong lock, the knives are very average in all other respects

There is really no reason to hate on Cold Steel. I think most of the Cold Steel hate out there stems from one or more of the following:

  • People who want to feel elite and don't want to buy a brand of knife that is well known by non-collectors of knives and sold at shopping malls.
  • People who are bitter of the fact that they overpaid for their knife and therefore want to insult the much better value (and possibly stronger - especially folders with Tri-Ad Lock) Cold Steel option.
  • People who are against any knives made in non-1st world countries (even though these knives may be better than the knives they currently have).

Opinions?

Actually there is another valid and important reason. I would rather support a company that does not cater to the mall ninja crowd, Does not copy and advertises with some ethics that match mine.

With so many companies that meet those criteria, I do not want to support the others at all. No snobbery here, just a sense of ethics and common sense when it comes to what is best for the knife community.

To each their own, but why call people snobs because they despise the way a company does business and to whom who their ads are targeted as a group? Why is that not on your list? The poor actions are quite obvious.

Some may think those words (Snob, bitter, elite) are trollish with the purpose of creating drama on a knife forum. ;)

I have as much of a right to base my decisions on that as does someone who ignores those things and only considers the knives.

So, I do not feel elite, I do not feel bitter, I do not despise knives made in non-first world countries. I just chose to despise actions by some companies and I did not see that mentioned in your list for some reason. :D.

Also keep in mind that lock strength is meaningless to someone who knows how to be safe with a folder locking or not.

Probably already mentioned but don't want to read the 7 pages...

The problem is not with the knives but with marketting/advertising methods...

I actually bought one of the "good" bushman knives. Never had a problem with it. I have to say, I sure love the design. Love the grind on the knife.

It sure is a lot of knife for the price!

I got one of the newer models, and brother, you ain't kiddin'. That Ram Lock has a learning curve, but one you get it down, its a snap. I could see the handle being a pain after prolonged use, but for a tough folder, the price is hard to beat.

I personally think the Ram Lock is stronger than the Tri-Ad, based on simple mechanics and material used. Either way, CS has some good folders, for a reasonable price.

1. Cold Steel (as a whole), are not better than Kershaw, BM or spyderco.
2. Cold Steel's cold/heat treat make their AUS8 quality edc steel. (Japan)
3. IMHO Taiwan is not China. I'm sure they are proud of their mainland heritage, but they are probably closer to being American than the folks calling the shots in Bejing.

people hate them because of the marketing for the most part.
But when you only focus on cold steel knives and nothing else, even ignoring prices,
theyre pretty good.

What I have learned in many years here at BF, both lurking in the early days and then actually joining is; the threads that get the most replies are about the perceived superiority of X knife company. People are fans and have their favorites but when it comes down to it; we're talking about tools here people. I have never understood how it makes somebody feel better about themselves to poo-poo on another member's choice. Cold Steel makes good knives along with the other favorites here. They have their strengths and weakness' like any other company. It's cool to voice your opinion, but the notion that their "fit and finish" is poor is absolute garbage repeated by people who most likely have never owned one. I have owned about a half dozen folders over the years, and a FB or two. With the exception of the Kudu (hey, it's a freakin $8 knife what do you expect?) none of them were poorly constructed or made of "inferior" materials. WHy is it that Zytel in acceptable for Spyderco and not CS? How come Al Mar can charge over $100 for a 3" bladed knife in AUS8a but if CS offers a 4" model with same steel for $60 people get their panties in a bunch? What is different about the Recon 1's beautifully matched g10 handles compared to the g10 handles on the Kershaw Spec Bump? What a load of crap.

The tri-ad lock are nothing but really great implement nevertheless Aus-8 steel dull too fast compare to another standard steel like VG-10 or s30v.

I ever had AK-47 folder which claimed to be the sharpest knife CS ever made. It really sharp OOB but after been used cutting paper box and small nyron robe for a week I really noticed that the blade was kind of dulled. I never has this kind of problem at all on my Spyderco Centofante 3.

What the point of strong folder since it came up with mediocre-steel blade.

Speaking of CS videos... have you seen the latest Zombie Go Boom clips? Real werld knife use almost... Three Stooges level NYUK NYUK NYUK!!!!
