Why Lynn Thompson Rules!

He also puts out a lot of good products at reasonable prices (in addition to some really expensive stuff). Before I owned a Cold Steel product, I listened to a lot of the bashing that goes on around here. After I actually got my hands on a couple, it turns out they're actually pretty nice knives.

You're right, people do need to educate themselves, but they also shouldn't just listen to what everyone says all the time. There's a difference between the product, service, and the guy running the show. I have personally found their products to be great, never dealt with their services (though their warranty isn't limited lifetime like lots of other companies), nor do I know Mr. Thompson or care for what he's doing. He does some sleazy stuff, but I like his knives enough to buy a few and use em.

Here, Here!!!!
The real sleaze going on is the power this topic has to cause people to waste hours of their time getting mad and obsessing over something that will never be resolved in order to turn out a painstakingly crafted reply to bash or justify OPINIONS.

As I have stated in the past, each of us has to make up his/her own mind about Cold Steel. I am not going to have my mind made up by anyone elses ideas of what is right or wrong. I would not expect anyone else to base their decisions on my values. Cold Steel have some good knives made for them, and if that is your only criteria, go for it. You probably won't be disappointed with the knife you get. I on the other hand feel that there are more knives than I will ever need, available from companies that I respect, to ever feel the need to purchase from one I don't.

Well said Keith. This isn't a difficult concept to understand. There's no need to make it more than this. This doesn't mean one "side" "wins" or not.

The guy knows how to generate publicity for one.

But besides that, you got to admit he is one of us. I mean he loves knives. And not just knives, all kinds of big, sharp stuff that you can send hurtling through the air, or chrashing through an unsuspecting watermelon.

The stuff he comes up with is, admitedly a rip off of other designs. But alot of his stuff IS origininal. And his products are just plain fun to play with. How cool is a sjambock? Or one of those torpedos? heavy double ended throwing spikes, that'll knock out prey even if it hits sideways.

I take my Cold Steel Bushman to the woods for camping and for its price it is a tremedous value.

How about , since he and cold steel are taking alot of heat elsewhere, we make this thread, a Cold Steel / Lynn Thompson appreciation thread?

Any fans of the product or the man? and why?

Do not mean to be rude but have you never seen a sjambock before. It is not "original" sorry to dissapoint. I can remember a sjambock since I was born and before my time during apartheid it was used by the police!

I believe LT says in his description of the sjambock that the one it is copied from comes from Africa and is made of hippo hide. So what if he made a copy out of plastic? He took a certain risk in doing so that he'd even get back a return on what he invested. I just can't see where it matters what he does. If something carries no patent of course he's within his rights to copy it and try to market it. All he needs is the money and desire.

Although I agree with you that the sjambok is not an "original" idea, I'd venture to say that very few people in the US (or maybe even outside of Africa) have heard about or much less seen a sjambok.

I don't care if he copied the thing, its been in plastic for a long time, myne is older than me and its in plastic. It's one of those things you don't even notice anymore when walking in shops. You can buy one for 8$ here. I have no problem with CS. Just wanted to inform some people of history. Sorry if I ruffled some feathers.

What behavior do people dislike about Lynn Thompson? Am I missing something, or do people just not like it when he says that certain manufacturers are cheating the public and are liars? That's exactly what they're doing and what they are. I appreciate what Lynn's doing. I agree with everything I've heard him say. He's an excellent martial artist and knife designer and Cold Steel makes the best products. I never buy anything but Cold Steel.

Wow you dug this one out of the woodwork. I think people are more upset about his alleged rip off of certain designs, and to some degree over the top marketing. Also, Cold Steel is a big part of knife companies importing from China, but I don't really blame most companies for doing this, they have to, to remain competitive. I prefer to accept cold steel for what it is, a large knife company that has some good, some reasonable, and some awful products. Don't bother getting into an argument with people about it, just hang out here, learn, and you might understand.

Let's se if I understand this.

If other manufacturers lie, cheat, steal, manufacture cheap knives from junk steel,, and move American jobs to China, they're good guys, but if Lynn Thompson does it he's a bad guy? Am I right? what did I miss? :p

All you've done so far is bumped 2 very old threads related to Cold Steel. Good job!

I like the Cold Steel Flight of the Intruder Bowie and the Carbon V Trailmasters of a few years back if you strip off the kraton handles and replace tham with Micarta or hardwood. I have used a couple of these very hard over the years and they hold up very well.

I smell something...something trollish coming this way...And who the hell are "they"? These "certain" manufacturers... Give us some names or leave us the hell alone!

It's not just his business practices, or even those business practices he may or may not share with other companies. It's that he makes knife manufacturers and users alike look bad in the name of turning a buck for himself.

Now, you can come back with "So what, you don't knoooooow him he does what he wants! It's a free country why do you care what LT does?!" but there are plenty of users who don't like to have their tools promoted as cow-carcass killing machines, or have the lethal effectiveness of a small knife on a person wearing a leather jacket demonstrated for the public, most of whom seem to see pocket knives as weaponry, and would have no problem outlawing carrying a personal pocket knife to make themselves feel a little more safe from law-abiding citizens.

What's being done here is shifting the entire argument against Cold Steel to "Oh, they ship jobs overseas," so people who like them can point out how ridiculous that objection is, when plenty of other companies are doing it. If you genuinely can't see why Cold Steel's marketing choices are a problem--well then, I just don't know what to tell you--other than "good luck with that spring-loaded knife launcher you're building for the sleeve of your The Matrix trenchcoat."

BUCK, Spyderco, Benchmade. Of course, Buck's USA made knives are still junk 420HC steel. And even the magic of a Paul Bos heat treat can't make junk steel into qualiti steel.

Yeah yeah I know Buck sells a ton of them. Anything you make cheap enough lotsa folks will buy, no matter how poor the quality. :thumbdn:

Benchmade and spyderco both make classes of knives manufactured in China. Does anyone bash them?

Do they swipe designs and market to the ninja crowd?
Huge difference and I feel sorry for folks who do not see it.
