Why no new folding tanto designs?

A nice pack, indeed.^
I'm talking about a straight spine, curved point tanto with a bo, fuller, on each side of the blade. :)

Sweet collection Razeman,

So, for the purpose of discussion, a Lum folder, Tanto. need more input.

Hey Rolf,

a "true" Tanto surely wouldn't be a Lum?

Hi Sal! Of course but tanto come in many variations.
Please know, I'm not picky.
BTW, I do have a Double Bevel incoming. Thank you Mr. R. I'm very excited to get this folder!

I don't find the americanized tanto that hard to sharpen. That is as long as I'm just keeping an already fairly sharp blade touched up. Just a few strokes on the sharpmaker for the main edge. Then I switch to just touching up the front edge. The key is doing it free hand, doing it in the jig or a system like the wicked edge makes it a pain in the ass, because you have to keep flipping the knife around. I think the least frustrating way is to finish with the main edge first then move on to the front edge. That way it is like sharpening two knives.

Sharpening a tanto blade from dull is a nightmare.

I agree, tantos are not difficult to sharpen. Just treat the tip as a separate edge/angle, and you are golden.

Np Lycosa, excited about my tanto too. Good trade, good trade.

Sal, if you mean more input towards the lum tanto suggestions, my personal vote would be a damascus blade variant.
Second choice would be hap40 (i havent tried one yet, but would like to), seems to be a popular choice and alot of people have been raving about it.
Or a zdp189/420, really like that combo.
Big fan of composite steels. And think they would look really cool on that long straight blade like that with the hamon line.
My personal vote for handles are purple or red g10. Cf and ti of course are always popular go to's.

A laminated blade would be sweet. Staying true to the Japanese traditions.

I think a nishigin scale would be awesome as most of us would just collect, carry and never really "use" it hard enough. That with ZDP blade would be a grail Spyderco for me period.

Oh my!!! This would be Awesome!

I had a Lum sprint and it was Great!
Unfortunately, I moved it on to a fellow member, in order to further complete my Foliage Green, collection..

I would definitely be in for something on a newer scale!

Hap40, with a butterscotch G10 (because of the burnt orange, of the other Hap40 run) and a compression lock... Ooohhhhh yyyeeeeaaaahhhhhh!!!

If any other steel... A Laminate, would be a serious upgrade and Foliage Green G10!
It's been some time, since a Foliage sprint, has been put out..

I Need to add a new one!!!

I would be down with hap-40. I would like any steel besides VG-10, yes it is a good steel but we have become so spoiled with excellent steels.

Agreed - no VG10. There are SO many better options these days. Personally, I'd like to see Spyderco drop VG10 all together, and move to S35VN or CTS-XHP as their entry-level steel. Times are changing....it isn't 2002 anymore!

Also, I was thinking that a EMT/Rescue tanto folder would be a new way to go. I'm thinking a kiridashi point and a serrated belly.
I actually have a few sketches drawn up.

As far as "tanto" blades go I don't really like them>> except for one tanto design and that's the Bob Lum collaboration that Spyderco did. I actually have a "user" C-46 Tanto folder of Spyderco's that I carry/EDC on special occasions. It's the only tanto I've ever owned that I deemed as being usable. The tanto end on the LUM model is streamlined whereas most other tanto designed are squared off thus making them only good for self defense in my estimation.

I've got the black-bladed, ATS-55, combo edged model and I've always loved it for some strange reason and again as a general rule I just don't care for tanto blades that much. But Bob Lum's genius made a tanto blade that is actually functional from several standpoints. I've even used mine for a couple of skinning chores which most tanto blades are next to useless in that category.

I also love the Spyderco LUM fixed blade as well. I'm hoping to get my hands on another one before too long. I was truly sad when I heard of Bob Lum's early demise because I was very close to buying one of his custom made Tanto designs. He sure left a very respectable legacy in the knife world for sure. And I don't care if Spyderco ever does another Tanto again. Because they already hit the ball out of the park with the LUM model IMO.

Thanks, JD.
Those who like the tanto should Google the various blade and handle shapes of tanto. Lot's to work with on this knife, as a folder.

It would be great to see some variations, but I love the Lum tanto blade and that is my main interest. I want one in a high-end performance steel (hap40 is great, so is M4, 10V, Cruwear, 4v, etc), but I hope if this happens the cost can be kept affordable. That means not CF (I love CF but peel-ply G10 is great stuff in looks and function) and nothing too crazy in other regards. Keep it simple, like the Lum we all drool over in pics :)
If Sal wants to do other variants of tanto, I'm interested, but hard to beat the Lum blade design!

Ive been thinking about tantos for the past 3 days now. Sounds like the majority of people arent crazy about tantos anymore. A new variant of the Lum folder sounds like a shoo-in. The only thing i can think of (or what Lycosa said) is to pretty much make a more traditional 'katana' style blade folder.
The curved point tanto would probably appeal to alot more people then the pointed style. A fuller would be sweet on it too. I would prefer it to be a long narrow blade. And i think it would be really cool if the blades spine was flush with the handles when closed. That always makes for a comfortable carry and classes up the knife. Like the nilakka.
