Why you gotta do dat?!

Not really my bag . Except I might have the same knife in serrated and plain edge , or different blade metals or handle materials or.... maybe I do understand !

Exactly. Heck, I just got back from the post office where I mailed another BFC member my PM2 in trade for a Cold Steel in XHP. I had never had a Cold Steel folder, and wanted one because... i just did. Do I expect the Code 4 to do anything that my other folders couldn't? No. So it really doesn't fit a need, or even a specific niche. It will be redundant in my collection and therefore totally irrational.

Mr. Spock would tell me it's illogical. But ya know what? I wanted it. That's good enough of a reason for me.

"Why do people do things different than I do? What is wrong with them?"

It's kinda like the "Knives that are stupid and ugly" threads that seem to pop up every month or so.

What’s the deal with people “collecting” one single knife from a particular company? I see and meet multiple people (not only on this forum) that are crazy for Sebenzas or crazy for the PM2 ONLY, and they’ve sunk 800-900 bucks+ into them. Why not use those funds and enjoy knives from different brands/models?

Or maybe that’s the definition of “collecting”? I suppose I just can’t consider myself a “collector” rather than a “user/connoisseur”?

900 dollars is nothing. I've spent 30K on my current collection. In fact 900 wouldnt have even bought my last knife.

I collect different knives but I also have a few models that I have multiple copies of...for instance, I have almost every Kershaw Skyline ever made...almost. I could probably be considered a CRK collector as I have several...I'd have more if the damn bills didn't always need to be paid.

Also I plan to start collecting toxic green Z-Hunter folding knives to try and find one that isn't a piece of crap.

There's nothing wrong with how one chooses to collect and you shouldn't pass judgement on preferences of other Knife Knuts. Heck, there are avid knife "users" who think it's crazy to have a knife collection. All viewpoints are valid.

No. No I don't know. You're making an awfully bold assumption.

Maybe, that guy with the collection of PM2s has had 200 other makes and models of knives, and found that he likes the PM2 better than the rest, so he sold off his collection and now because he has a wide breadth and depth of experience is focusing his attention on the one that floats his boat more than anything else.

Besides, to a non-knife person, we're all crazy for having multiples of knives. Most people would thin i'm nuts for having more than one folding knife and one fixed blade knife.

Most likely THIS^

I started off this hobby by trying out many models of many brands but find myself currently in the transition to only certain models of 3-5 brands. Although currently I do not plan to collect all possible variants of any model, I do have multiple Spyderco Millies, for example, because I just like the Military model very much.

I seriously don't understand people who don't have more than one PM2.
I’m glad someone said it.
Lol. 800-900 bucks would hardly touch sides for most serious collectors.
If you have to ask why we do it you will never understand. It's a compulsion and a challenge to complete a collection.
I collect every satin blade non-serrated Military and Manix. Why.....? Because I want to.;)
I’m not bragging but if we are talking monetary value means you’re a “collector” then in that case I’m far from as I only have roughly 2 grand retail in my knives. But I made it a point to get a knife that fit a certain criteria for EDC. I didn’t just go out and buy 4 grand worth of 940 Osborne’s to experience the same knife day I and day out.

I have bought a lot of different knives but through all of that I have learned what I like. I really like the Spyderco Military so I have picked up a few in a handful of flavors. I would assume that most people who have multiple versions of a specific model have plenty of other knives as well. Your question sort of implies that most people who collect a specific model only own that one knife. I doubt that is usually the case.

I like a lot of different foods but I really, really like ice cream. It is not the only food I eat but I eat it often. I enjoy not just one flavor of ice cream but most flavors of ice cream. Why would I limit myself to only one flavor if at this point in my life I have learned that it is my favorite food? Sure, I could only eat pistachio ice cream because it is my favorite flavor but that still wouldn't be as enjoyable as eating all of the flavors I like.

I like variety in my collection but I also like variety within one model.

I think the OP is asking why you need to stock 5 buckets of ice cream of the same brand in your freezer.:p But I believe you answered: because you like different flavors of the ice cream of that brand, which I understand and agree.

I can't speak for others but for me its about collecting not EDC.

I have EDC'd the same 20 knives every day on rotation for years and I hardly ever change my EDC rotation. However my collection is wide and varied and not purchased as users. I understand that for some people this is strange as they consider a knife a tool to be used.
I have not counted my Military's lately but of all the variants I own, I only have one Military which I EDC........:D

To each his own;)

Title: Knife Collectors

"I see and meet multiple people (not only on this forum) who collect one model of knife exclusively, like the Sebenza or PM2. That is not something I do, but, in the interest of knowing more about how my the brains of my fellow knife fans work, I was wondering if anyone who does that would discuss why that appeals to them. Thanks!"

Why you gotta not do dat?!

I could never do that! But I could understand why some do, kind of. Trying to get all the great sprint runs and what not.

anyone here that complains about anyone else's taste in knives or collecting philosophy is in some serious denial. every single one of us in here are viewed as weirdos to the the general public. when people at work see carving up an apple at work, they probably think i'm a weirdo. you're a weirdo judging another weirdo for because their weird decisions don't agree with your own weird decisions

My theory:
In a past life they couldn’t find a good knife when they needed it the most, and they’re not going to make the same mistake this time around!
It’s the only thing that makes any sense to me.

My wife can’t understand it on any level.

I think most of us on here are here because we love knives ...and most that collect one brand or even one specific model have had several brands and models and have just found something that brings them joy.

Just as some are only interested in traditionals and others only modern folders others fixed blades ...

some may have tens of thousands wrapped up in collections and others may have a hundred or less total ... but we all come here to share them and enjoy the discussions ... even those of us that are crazy.
