Why you gotta do dat?!

...maybe that’s the definition of “collecting”? I suppose I just can’t consider myself a “collector” rather than a “user/connoisseur”?

Not *the* definition, but certainly *a* definition.

IMHO there are two general types of collecting: acquiring representative examples of a type of item (e.g. a bunch of different knives), and acquiring all the many permutations of a specific item (e.g. all the variations of the PM2).

I generally lean toward the former collecting style, but in recent months I’ve kept myself entertained attempting to acquire all the variations of the lowly Victorinox Golfer.

What’s the deal with people “collecting” one single knife from a particular company? I see and meet multiple people (not only on this forum) that are crazy for Sebenzas or crazy for the PM2 ONLY, and they’ve sunk 800-900 bucks+ into them. Why not use those funds and enjoy knives from different brands/models?

Or maybe that’s the definition of “collecting”? I suppose I just can’t consider myself a “collector” rather than a “user/connoisseur”?
This is your concern with the behavior of others? How about driving slowly in the passing lane? Taking out thousands in credit to buy crap they don't need? Creating enormous mounds of waste? Annoying me? These are serious problems!

I kid. I'm not a collector either, I don't get it. I don't need to get it though. It's not an activity for me. I don't understand high fashion, religion or narcotics either. So I don't partake.

As someone that collects some of a specific model (Spyderco Military and Para2), the answer is simple. Because I want to, and I can. I don't see a whole bunch of stuff coming from overseas companies that makes me say "Gotta have it". I like and will stick to my Emerson, ZT, Spyderco, Protech, Benchmade, and a few others.

Crap. I was gonna catch up on this thread. I hadn’t seen it since page 1, but just a few hours later we’re already 4 pages deep!

The 940. Now there's a knife I could (as Hickory n steel put it) see myself having one for each day of the week. :D
Hmm.....
Same could be said for the 2 GB models... a shame we don't see sprints of them. Even sets of aftermarket scales would be great. I'm not a CF guy, but I adore the GB2.

Amen, I always thought the GB2 deserved different scales. I would like aggressive G10 on my GB1

Clearly OP has not visited the CRK sub forum here...

It worth it if you want to see a couple collections of many Sebenza and Mnandi that will put a lean on your car, assuming you drive a nice car, lol!

Just wondering what makes everyone tick, some seem to be way too sensitive around here. It seems to follow the same trend as someone who goes to a restaurant and orders the same thing every time. Just easier that way? Who knows.

I need variation in my life.
Just poor wording like @marcinek suggested. When the OP comes off as negatively critical you will tend to get some disagreement.
No big deal.

Thanks for the opinion I generally feel the same way.

Hey at least you have good taste! Generally speaking though if I had excess funds I don’t think I’d put it towards the same knife. But like others has stated different strokes for different folks

It’s a beautiful thing isn’t it?

I own a GB2 and I agree with you and GB940Rookie GB940Rookie 100% so much so that I’ve actually orders custome scales for it. It’s sad how cheaply the scales were made on the knife.

I have 10 Para2's all in different steels, 11 when Maxamet arrives. I don't think of it as a 'collection' as they are all to be used. I just really like the design, it fits my needs really well, and I like trying the different steels.

I do have about 30 other folders, all different models except the 2 Millies. A Para2 is in pocket probably 70 - 80% of the time though.

Do I need all the above? No. Man can have a vice though, and this is a useful and harmless one.

I go to a place in Chicago, Art's Drive In, and always order a bacon/egg/cheese sandwich and a black cup of joe because I know that's what I like from them at 5am. I don't need variety because I've tried the rest and only want what I like.

Since the laws changed in IL I almost exclusively carry autos now. When it comes to guns, I lean towards one brand: CZ. This doesn't mean that I don't have/try other stuff, but I can be comfortable buying things in familiar with.

Off Topic
Any other Chicagoans on here that go to Art's on Elston & North? Love that place!
Haven't yet but going to check it out.

Spyderco needs to make a knife roll like those books they make for coin collectors. Instead of a space for every variant of 1941 penny, one for every PM2. M390, Super Blue, knifeworks exclusive, countycomm exclusive, etc.

Actually, that'd be a good idea for the S models.

I could buy the house I live in and my neighbors house with dollars they have invested

If you find something you like....go for it. I happen to like Buck 110's so I have a few of them and I'll be getting more. Some are the original version, others are custom or SFO models. If I could collect Tony Bose customs, I would do that too. Unfortunately, I'm not in that position so I stick to what I like and what won't take anything away from my family by breaking the bank. I like other brands and have tried a lot of different knives, but if something doesn't jump out at me and I have some extra money, I'll get another 110. Simple and solid man, it's a good way to go. Personally, I think it's cool when guys have a big collection of the same model in different variations. When someone posts in an EDC thread and has a different Cadet or something like that paired up with another knife everyday...that's awesome to me.

I came here for the answer.
Page 4 and still no sufficient justification.
How can I explain?

An approach might be that man likes to repeat successful behavior.
Like Popper said. ;)

That's the thing though, we don't need to justify our collecting to anyone but ourselves ( and maybe the significant other:oops:).
Why does one person collect only Disney movies when there are so many other genres out there? Why limit yourself to Disney?
I say why not? and who cares? I'll collect anything I want. You can collect anything you want. I don't need to justify why you collect Pez dispensers.

ETA: Not you in particular. You in general if that wasn't clear already.;)
