Why you gotta do dat?!

@craytab
Not telling anyone what to do with their collection. As stated before just wondering why people do what they do. I like debates.

As for the whole thread I don’t view my knives as “collectibles” ? Meaning..I don’t feel the need to acquire every single sprint run of a model as I tend to use my knives and do not need a user PM2 and then 8 more “models” sitting in my drawer. I’m sure many will agree and many will disagree. But it’s just my view on this subject.

EDIT: There is a certain type of joy that comes over me when I buy a new knife and flick it for the first time however.

Couldn't someone ask "Why do you spend all your money on knives? Why not collect other things instead of sinking a bunch of money into one thing, KNIVES?"

Its a matter of perspective. To that person YOU are the weird one :)

And that right there is the problem with this thread from the very beginning.

What and how people prefer to collect is not a debate. Attempting to disprove or debate someones preferences seems to me like making a deliberately offensive or provocative online post with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response from them.

I'm not sure what that is called, but I bet there's a name for it.

This guy cracks me up, always trying to split hairs.

I try to mix it up a bit. I have 1 stag, 1 aluminum, 2 kirinite, 2 different small fixed blades from Arno Bernard, different models and different handles, different colours of bone, wood, size, micarta and brand and steels, modern and traditional. At least 4 different lock types.

Now I want a smooth bone knife, a carbon fiber, a titanium and a D2 steel blade. And then something else I am sure.

I'm glad you added that caveat. If you're not good at justifying your knife collection to your Sig-O, you better be good at hiding it from them :D!
I used to get away with sneaking in some of my knife purchases into the "tools and equipment " budget . She caught onto that PDQ and now I have to only my "personal toy" budget to draw upon .:(

Title: Knife Collectors

"I see and meet multiple people (not only on this forum) who collect one model of knife exclusively, like the Sebenza or PM2. That is not something I do, but, in the interest of knowing more about how my the brains of my fellow knife fans work, I was wondering if anyone who does that would discuss why that appeals to them. Thanks!"

Why you gotta not do dat?!

I have 3 types of afflictions. 1. Once I get interested in something I go all out on that something for x amount of time until I have too many concurrent interests and something has to give. : (AKA Distracted by shiny stuff) 2. Completeness Issues (AKA Pokemon Syndrome: Gotta have em all). 3. I love collecting stuff and cannot let them go. (AKA Hoarder). Even if I don't love it I keep it. I appreciate what it is for form and function even if I determine I won't use it every day.

So not only am I hog wild to try new types of Flippers / one handed 3.5 inch or greater, left handed, tip down carry, assisted or non assisted knife, while searching for the perfect EDC. Once I find one I like (winner winner) I get interested in the history of the model and want to complete the collection for that model. This was easy when I collected SAKs but now in this era of my knife collection I have been bitten by the PM2 and I desire to have all the iterations of that model until it is completed or this collection era ends and a new interest burns all my energy. Meanwhile The quest continues looking for the next model to usurp the PM2.

I take my enjoyment of knife collecting out of finding the perfect tool for me to use. Some people collect watches and I never could get that one (thank goodness) but my one friend has to decide what watch to wear for the day and has enough he does not need to wear the same one twice for a couple of months. Where I have to decide what knife to carry. Similar afflictions just different stuff.

I consider it an addictive personality trait by the way my brain works. You should have seen my comic book collection from my comic book era......

Thank you woodsmanoh woodsmanoh , that was very informative.

But, sadly, that is the wrong way to collect knives, apparently. Proven by science. Sorry, man.
