You can use a jeep to mudbog in, or you can use a Shelby Mustang. Which one are you going to use? The Shelby cost more so it should be able to handle it, right?

Not that I'm saying a Hinderer or Sebenza and the like won't handle it, to be honest there's really only one answer to it. Not everyone has to use their expensive knives. If they want to, sure. If not, it's their money and their business.

But those are different purposes built way different. That's like trying to compare a $300 case for example to a benchmade griptilian for self defense that's not what I meant. What I mean is sebenzas and say a cryo are built similar as in all metal handle and such and one hand opening so why aren't sebenzas used the way some use cryos? I just have trouble understanding especially when it's carried but never used by the person. It's just weird to me if I went on a tool forum and said I collect expensive impact wrenches they would laugh and call me moronic. If I came here with a picture of a sebenza covered in grease oil and mud people would say same thing or some anyway.

I'm not trying to hate on it It just doesn't make sense to me the not using it aspect. If I had money I might buy a sebenza because I too love the looks but I would use it the same way as a tac force or a delica or a utility knife because at end of the day scratches give it character, dirt can be cleaned out and I can resharpen it

It doesn't have to make sense to you, just to the person who's using/not using the knife. I don't really understand it either, but I can appreciate that they may want to keep their expensive knives pristine.

Maybe they get a kick out of using their less expensive knives. After all, if they used their expensive knives exclusively there would be someone saying 'man, I just don't understand why no one wants to use their less expensive knives. Give the RAT 1's a chance to work!'

I have been carrying and using knives a long time, never heard of your tac force.

Oh, googled it, it cost $8 on Amazon. There is your problem and thus your skewed perspective. Eventually you will own a Sebenza, if you stay with this long enough, and then you will have a couple of them. One will be much nicer than the others and you will prefer to use the other.
Best of luck.

Your first mistake was comparing impact wrenches to knives. Your second mistake was assuming nobody ever used Sebenzas for dirty work.

Though I must agree, not sure why people would keep a Sebenza in near-safe queen status by not using it. It is a utility knife, not one to look at. Superior functionality, but aesthetics aren't really its strongpoint. Now, if it was a marfione, that'd be a different story, even though I would never buy one LOL

$6000 is a bit crazy (says a guy who spent $500 on his third knife)

People actually do that?!?!:eek::confused:

Dude you barfed on your knife! :barf::eek:

I carry and use my Sebenza just like my other EDC's. I don't abuse it, and none of my knives really see any "hard use", except fixed blades when camping. I guess I'm just a suburban commando.

It's all perspective and personal choice, but not using a 'benza makes me think of a statement made by a local fireplace repair company: "We don't empty ash pits any more because it was too hard on the equipment".
The ash pit vacuums, that is.
"Sorry we don't move dirt with our bulldozer any more. It was too rough on the 'dozer."

If a tool is going to be expensive, it damn well better do it's job well and be made well enough to handle the job without failing.
An expensive "jewelry" knife is fine, but a plain-jane Sebenza does not look like a display piece to me at all.
It's why mine got used and abused.

Bought my little scout a ZT. He took it on his first campout, and used the edge to wear out a fire striker. May as well use it. But it's a good thing I enjoy sharpening. [emoji16]

you've got a mercedes and a jeep, you're driving to the forest for a camping trip. which vehicle are you gonna take?

:D

I'm as likely to carry and use a $400 knife as I am a $15 one, but if someone else wants to keep their $400 one pretty and just fondle it occasionally, while using their $15 one for actual cutting purposes, that's okay by me.

I have "Sunday go to meeting" knives like I have Sunday go to meeting clothes.

In both cases they are in the minority of what I own.

I've never understood this either, but I don't lose sleep over it. No sense getting bothered over what people choose to do with their property.

I only own one watch.

The same sentiment extends to my views on knife "collecting" ... LOL

So what's your point? I abuse my stuff because I'm bored and I have nothing better to do.

Some would say diving with this watch would be using it as it was intended. Some would say now that the cost is so high that might be stupid because after all there are much better tools to use now a days anyway. But at least diving with the watch serves a purpose and besides if properly taken care of and checked regulary there shouldn't be an issue.

Wear and tear will occur and occur naturally, but I see no point in abusing things just for the fun of it. To each his own and I'm glad that it appears that your enjoying your things.

Cheers

Just because some doesn't look used means that they aren't.
When I was younger, I didn't know any better. I'd use my knife for any/everything. Wore out quite a few knives not knowing any better. As I got older and wiser, I understood the importance of using the right tool for the right job. They'll last a lot longer used properly.
I use screwdrivers in my trade. I've got .99 cent beaters and 8.99 ones that don't get used for prying, chiseling, the good one only get used for the intended use.
I have Sebenza's that are both users and safe queens, so I can understand someone stating that they feel it's too nice to use.

That's just it, it doesn't have to make sense to you. Other people's money, other people's knives, other people's choice to do with their stuff how they please. Some people may chose to cut the drywall with a box knife when concrete is present because it doesn't make any sense to willingly run the tip of your $500 knife into concrete when they've got a $15 box knife with a 50 pack of replacement blades.

I personally understand the sentiment of keeping your nice knife "nice" and using your beater knife for things which could possibly damage it from abuse. Doesn't mean I don't use my Sebenza or umnumzaan, exactly the opposite. Ive used my umnumzaan every day. Just means I don't use my umnumzaan to plant annuals in the dirt, when I've got an AM Leonard soil knife strapped to my waist

Nobody buys a $1,200 impact wrench to look at and use a $50 one for work. So why do people buy Rocksteads and then go buy a cheap knife as beater knife. I thought the whole point of paying more is it would handle MORE abuse not so you would be afraid to use it in dirty situations.

Fixed it for you.

I've got a few pick-ups in the driveway. One (CTD, 6-spd) is a Highway Queen that has towed boats up and down the east coast as well as quads, our Jeep, campers, etc. Another, an old '95 Chevy (hunting truck) is beat up, scratched up and banged up. Both are 4X4 and both can sorta kinda do what the other can but I prefer to keep the Highway Queen nice and don't give a moment's thought to using the daylights out of the hunting truck in the woods, the beach or where ever.

I have a Sebenza and truly enjoy owning, carrying and using it judiciously. That said, I have a bunch of RAT-1s and CS Voyagers and don't give a moment's though to using the daylights out of them.

Just as I enjoy my pick-ups, I enjoy my RATs and Voyagers as much as the Sebenza, albeit in different ways.

Knives are things and to the extent that things can bring us enjoyment/pleasure, I would say that I obtain enjoyment and pleasure out of my knives irrespective of cost - otherwise I either wouldn't buy them or they would quickly wind up listed for sale/trade.

I like knives and that's my two-cents.

This is the description I put in the video...

Use it or lose it. Don't be afraid of getting a scratch in the finish. If you can't, I got news for you... YOU DON'T OWN IT - IT OWNS YOU!

Eh. Do with it what will give you the greatest satisfaction. Watches in particular, you're paying for jewelry, so I completely understand folks that don't want to scratch the finish. No matter which way you slice it, a $100 G-Shock is gonna outperform a Rolex all day every day.

Same can be said about knives ;)
