I've been considering purchasing a nice wide brim hat (think Tilley) but I'm unsure of what is currently the trend these days. Besides the Tilley's I'd like to know what is out there and some suggestions. Year-round use is the main function (hiking, hunting, fishing, etc.)

Thanks. :)

Best hats on the planet. Wouldn't go anywhere without mine.

A nice example ...

You might try the Seattle Sombrero by Outdoor Research. Made out of Gore Tex. Might be just the thing for the Jersy weather.

I have both the Tilley (Air-flo model) and the Akubra. For the summer, I like the Tilley better. The Akubra is stiff and I have a crushable felt wide brim hat I like much better for comfort and warmth. The Akubra does not get much use compared to the Tilley and the no-name brand crushable felt hat.

If you want an alternative to the Tilley, I think the military style boonie hats are close to them in style. They are lightweight and give you 360 degree sun protection. I have a few I have used for hunting and they work fine in warm weather. I like them better than ball caps for warm weather hunting.

I like the Filson Brush Hat.

Keeps the sun off and rain out, spreads a head net beautifully, stokes a fire like no other hat, makes a good seat to keep your rear dry, and is extremely durable. I'll role it up and stuff it in my pack if I don't want to wear it. Take it out give it a couple flicks and it's good as new. Just wax it up once in awhile and your good to go.

I don't hunt in it but I've shot some rounds of trap while wearing it, the brim can get in the way if you wear it forward.

Good luck in your search.

I live in the middle of freaking hot Texas. I've tried a bunch of hats over the years. Everything, including the Tilley, is just too hot for anything except casual wear. I've been wearing the Bora Bora from Columbia Sportswear. Great hat: lightweight with wide brim, really lets the head breathe and well constructed. I'm on my second hat in 5 years.

I got the Tilley T3 in white, keeps my head from gettin cancer (i'm prone). Its nice when you dunk it but there is little ventilation if your a real sweater. I got a woodland boonie hat, even though its darker colors its a little more vented. I have'nt tried the mesh style hats yet, while i know they would be cool, i'm worried about UV rays leaking thru onto me bald noggin.

I have four different models, well, actually, one of them belongs to my wife. The one I almost always wear looks very similar to that one, can't remember what model it is.

I have the akubra cattleman and a stetson. the akubra is vented. They do get hot.

Tilley...the only way to go. I have had a T3 for years but last year I got one of the Hemp ones and love it.

Me too on the skin cancer. I have to see the skin doc twice a year for preventive maintenance. I have the Tilley airflo. It has mesh in the top for some cooling. It is about all the mesh I feel comfortable wearing. In the cooler months I wear it with a Buff underneath for insulation.
