Wide brim hat.

I have to get in my votes :D

If I HAD to choose one, it would be the Akubra.

However, while backpacking, or anywhere else that I need to crush the thing. I really do like the Tilley.

Before the Tilley, I was just wearing the military boonie to fill that niche. I like them fine, and for the cost you can't beat them. I like the Tilley tons more, but it is up to you to decide if you like it $50 more :D

I know there's a lot of love for Tilley's, and one of these days I'm going to get one, but in the mean time I've been using a Outdoor Research Sombriolet for a while now and I really like it.

I've got a hard-to-fit head (i.e. a fat head) and the XL version of this hat actually is XL and fits great. With its vents and mesh liner, its nice and cool in the humid southeast and the wide brim priovides a nice amount of shade. Adjustable headband and a chin strap keeps it on in any wind. Highly recommended!

Hey all you Tilley wearers....

How do you store/fold your hat, so that it looks good when you pull it out?

Marion

I have the Tilley Air-FLo. I wash it after each use (if you don't wash out the sweat stains they will become permanent) and put it on a coffee can to let it dry. I store it that way too. It looks brand new even though I must have washed it 30+ times by now.

It is so light and durable that it was worth the money for it.

Have you looked at the "boonie" style hats. I like those more that most of the Tilleys because the crown of the hat isn't as high.

To me, it's a more casual look. There are many companies that make boonies so I won't name any, just thought it was worth a suggestion.

I don't know how old you are, but to me the Tilley is something an older crowd would wear-maybe I'm wrong!:grumpy:

I have two Tilleys, the airflo and a T something. I live out of a suitcase, so they get stored flat. However, if I am transiting I fold the brim under the crown, so the edges touch and create a "Baseball cap" looking bill on each end. I tuck them towards the middle and into each other, locking them into a flat packet. The sales person showed me how. I wish I had the capability to post pictures.

Well son, what do you mean "older crowd"?? 70 year old, 40, etc. Just curious because some of us are in the older crowd and some of us are in the "Holy crap, look at that old geezer still hiking!" crowd.

First off, boonie hats have been around since the Vietnam war, so I would think they would be more of an "older crowd" style.

Second, the high crown of the Tilley's has the effect of providing a space that keeps the head cooler, much like the attic space in most houses keeps the living space cooler.

Third, I don't know how young you are, but Fedora style hats have become very popular among the younger men's crowd here in Hollywood. Good things always come back into style.

I think Tilley's look awesome; I mean look at that pic of Brian above, the guy looks like a model for Outside or something :D:D It's an added bonus to what seems to be a very functional hat.

And I am definitely in the younger crowd, though not particularly concerned with the current fashion.

Anyway, they look cool enough for me, finally ordered one this past week, the LTM6 Airflo :thumbup:. Looks to be an excellent hiking hat.

D'oh! Outed by Charlie! :eek::foot::D:D

Hahah, damnit, I was hoping I wouldn't catch flak for that :grumpy::p

Well, I have taken all of your recommendations and combined with my personal preferences I have chosen..................

The Tilley TH4 Hemp Hat.

Thank you all for your input. It was very interesting to see who wears what.

Popped back in here to see how it turned out and think it turned out great for you, Ken. Terrific choice and as long as an elephant doesn't get ahold of it you should be OK....
