Wide brim hat.

sunday afternoon hat works best for me....looks goofy but great coverage and its VERY light. i liked it better than the tilleys.

I'm a big fan of the USMC's boonie hat... it has a wider brim than most boonie hats and has lasted me nearly 5 years of daily wear so far....

I have to chime in again. The original tilley some people felt was too warm. Tilley then made one out of nylon with a vent around the crown. Not bad,but for some people(me for one)the nylon was hotter than the cotton duck. The new,new tilley I posted a link to earlier in this thread is a cotton duck with an entire poly/cotton mesh top. It also still gives good UV protection. The open weave catches breezes and feels like air conditioning. The original can be made cooler just by dunking it in water. I don't work for Tilley I just love their stuff

This is the one I just bought for the upcoming football season.

Just to throw an idea out there.... A straw hat?

I think that Tilley is a very good hat, I have the hemp one, with the widest brim...

Very good for active wear....

And it will take a bunch of abuse....

I've used a couple different hats, Tilley, Filson, Columbia, US GI issue, but my current favorite is a Real Deal Tarp hat. It's light weight and there's no brake-in period. :D

I will say that the Filson hats are just about indestructible; warm, yes, but just about bullet proof--I've had my faded Filson packer for about 10 years and it is still in fighting form. I've got a Filson Bush hat on back order now. ;)

I figured I’d throw this in just for variety. I tried my hand at felting my own hat. It turned out pretty good, I used wool quilt batting. I found a wood head mold that was my size on ebay and …..well this is what it looks like.

Starting out with the wool.

Hush, that is very cool.

I like it. Never even thought of doing something like that.

I have a Tilley I use all the time now and like it very much T3 I believe. I have had the Seattle Sombrero and thought highly of that until I lost it. I am real fan of a real light nylon baseball cap from REI that I have also for summer wear.

I'm not a hat person, but my thinning hair is requiring me to become one. That said, I love my Tilley. I would have liked to have had a TH4 made of hemp, but since I bought locally (because I couldn't measure my fat head properly), I settled on the TM10. I love the wide brim, I love the strap, etc., etc. I have yet to find anything I don't like about it.

Another +1 on the Tilley. I wear the hemp one to keep southern Arizona sun off my face and neck. Doesn't seem to heat up too bad.
Just ordered the Brazilian tarp hat though. We'll see if it gives the Tilley a run.

Boy, lots of Tilley love here. I have to go with the REI Explorer. I bought one last summer for a trip to Israel and love it. I wear it pretty much year round. It's a good weight material, well made, and is easy to maintain.

You are most talented.

Thanks for the positive comments. I've got a buddy who I’ve been buying hand wrought copper ware from. He made my boiler I use as my camping cook pot for me and recently I had him make me one of his proto type insulated copper tankards. When the tankard arrived a “post it” was on the invoice, he said he would gladly accept anything I had made that I thought he would like.

This is a huge compliment, Larry is a phenomenal talent. I called him and said I would be glad to make up something for him but I would rather pay for the tankard as that was the original deal. So we talked about all the junk I can cobble together and he thought the hat was something that he could use and was pretty unique, he knows I’ve only made a couple of them. So some time this year before the next Alafia River Rendezvous I have to make up a white hat for Larry. I may throw a little rabbit or beaver into the mix. It takes me a good two days or more of fairly constant work to make it. I’ll have to finish it at the Rendezvous for a perfect fit.

Hey Danny, this is a 000-15S, it’s all mahogany, and its little brother, the 00-15, is pure tone and ambushed me about 4 years ago when shopping around for an acoustic bass. I love the sound of mahogany.

I have been wearing a Filson Tin Cloth Bush hat for 6 years and can speak very well of this hat. I originally thought it was expensive, but have come to learn it is worth every penny! I love this thing!

Just ordered one of them "Real Deal" jobbies. I've never been a big Tilley fan - and my other brimmed hats tend to be too dressy for the trail or river.

I'm a tilley fan, but sunbody hats should not be overlooked as well.

Sunbody Gus for the summer :D

Something in fur felt or wool felt for the winter.
Keep an eye on Sierra Trading Post for them :)
