Wide brim hat.

I really like my Stetson Santa Fe. I mean... it's Stetson, an American classic! :p

I actually saw someone wearing a Tilly on Bourbon Street, when I was out that way for business, last week. Obviously a tourist, by the gawking and the picture taking, but most definitely a Tilly. I don't think I've ever seen one outside of the hiking trail. It made me laugh a little to see it contrasted against all of the drunk college kids, revelers, and "ladies of the night" (although it was closer to late afternoon than anything else).

one thing about the Tilleys i've noticed when wearing one......i can wear the biggest fixed blade on my belt and stroll down the street at night, and the Police in my area dont even blink. If i wear a baseball cap and the same knife, they are a little more inquisitive...

I wear my Tilley all the time in town and on trail. Admittedly I'm one of the few folks who wear a full brim styled hat in town and I get looks once in a while. However, I'm married and respected and don't have to worry about what people think of me and my "unusual" hats. In fact, most of my students recognize me when outside as the bushhat prof. My mocha tilley hat matched up with my maxpedition khaki quite well and I often hang it via the straps onto the attachment point when indoors.

Like CKE2 I love the hemp Tilley model the best. I also have the TH4 and my wife has a TH4 and another lady-like model. I use the nylon ones on the boats and in heavy downpours as they are more waterproof. The hemp one does look more better and I prefer that it is slightly heavier, although not too heavy. My post-doc who does a lot of marine diving for fish census wheres a nylon one while he shallow diving and snorkeling to keep the sun off his neck. He swears its the only full brim hat he has had that survives constant immersion in salt water like that.

A cool feature of the Tilley's is that the brim gets stiffer when they are rained on. Another cool feature is the strapping system where the straps secure the hat behind your head and under the chin. There is simply no possible way you can blow this hat off of your head whether the wind is coming from the back or front. The foam pad at the top keeps the hat afloat when it falls in the water. Finally, the security pocket in the hat is just so nifty. A perfect spot to throw in a $20 bill, some water proof matches etc.

I've got my eye on a filson tin cloth bush hat in the future. I've had tin cloth hats in before (Australia Outback or Outfitters or something like that). It was a great hat but had to use it in the fall as I would sweat buckets in it during the summer.

Good luck on your choice.

Bora Bora is possibley the best hot weather wide brim hat out now.. has to be. its light and heavily ventilated.. my FIL has one and loves it. ill be getting one shortly

I have three Tilley's:

one of the old standard ones for yard work, hiking, etc.

one lightweight vented crown for daytime football games in Alabama* in September heat.

one hemp hat for football games in cooler weather.

They seem like no-brainers to me for sun protection at football games, but I don't remember ever seeing anyone else wearing one at games.

*Tigers, not Tide! War Eagle!

I use a boonie hat when I go fishing/camping.

Keeps the sun out of your eyes and has vents so you dont sweat. I aso wear it in the rain, keeps a little bit of my shoulders and my head dry.

I'm another Tilley-wearing Tiger fan! We are somewhat fortunate this year since the first three home games are night games! War Eagle!

I'm a tilley fan, but sunbody hats should not be overlooked as well.

Used the original Tilley since '84 - hiking (everywhere), fishing, around town. Always keep $10 in the pocket at the top, which came in handy a time or two. My wife borrowed it ONCE to wear for sun protection about two years ago and left it behind somewhere. Bought a new one (and got one for her too). I also have the Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero for real rainy weather - works well for that purpose, but it's no Tilley.

Tillie's have always been well worth the money, the strings hold them on in the worst of winds (or they can be tucked into the crown when it's not windy), a side can be snapped up (a la Australian outback hat), and they're pretty water resistant. I also tried their vented one for the summer - a bit cooler, but not so noticeable that I'd do it again. The original's all you need.
