Wife hates my Tilley Hat... Are there any full brimmed hats that actually look good?

So, last I heard, Noel Howard, the guy who made Indianan jones's hat sold the original hat mold to Christy"s of London. Those hats are warm, comfortable and will last forever.

My face is really too wide for a baseball cap (or so I have been told), but the guff a guy takes from even (nominal) friends when wearing something with a full brim can be discouraging. ("Gonna rope you some steers?" "Indiana Jones lose his hat?" "You get that in 'Nam?" etc, etc, and... etc.)

I've long been wearing a 30 year-old GI surplus boonie hat when I mow the yard, but it was coming to the end of its useful life. I spent some time looking for better alternatives without breaking the bank, but nothing seemed right unless it was priced a bit high to be soaking up my sweat while pushing a lawnmower. I opted for another GI boonie since it was a known quantity and the neighbors have already gotten most of the "laugh" out of themselves.

But this thread opens up some new possibilities.

Eff the nay-sayers. Be a man and rock a full brim. :D Here's my usual.

In early April I was in a car accident that left me with a nice sized manly man scar on my cheek. The docs told me to wear sunscreen and a wide brim hat for six months to keep the scar from turning permanently dark. This at least provided me an opportunity to annoy my wife with a bunch of different silly hats. Today's was a pre-WWII campaign hat. I think my favorite, though, is probably my Sunbody Golden Gus. It's actually a very handsome hat (which accents my very handsome face perfectly!) :)
See it here: http://www.sunbody.com/index.cfm/product/197/golden-gus.cfm

theorangecat- Nothing beats a boonie for yardwork- or painting, car washing, ....

FTB- that is the $%^&! Very sporty, my man!

I like my crushable felt I got at Bass Pro. REI had what looked like the same hat, but for some reason I was between their medium and large.

I'd recommend the Filson tin cloth bush hat.

I have a Filson Shelter Cloth Packer & had a Tin Cloth Packer, both trap condensation pretty bad as they are both water proof.
The little vents couldn't keep up with my sweating while hiking up the river during steelhead season & it was very uncomfortable on my bald gourd.:o
No lining, leather sweat band & the outer band is just glued on.(or was glued on,it popped off after a while behind the seat of my truck.)
The only time I wear mine is during elk season if it's snowing & I wear a thin polypro stocking cap under it.
I see that they have an insulated model now,but imagine it would be too warm for summer wear.
The hats I have & had were bought in the mid 90s mind you,so their quality might be better now.
I love my Marine Corps boonie for summer wear,it just soaks up the sweat.

I guess I should be glad that my wife likes my T3.

1st was white cotton. Wore that one out and sent it back.
2nd was cocoa hemp. Wore that one out and sent it back.
3rd is waxed cotton (they don't make the T3 Hemp any more). Still going strong.

I got her a broad brim Columbia sun hat that she recently wore in a heavy thunderstorm, now she sees the advantages of a broad brim hat.

REI Dorfman 100% wool Felt hat for $40 in green or black
Wears very well, keeps it shape and is easy to stream clean

Or for a summer hat
Barmah Hats Canvas Cooler is very stylish with a wide brim and a mesh side to the crown

start wearing a baseball cap turned backwards at an angle and your wife will not think the full brimmed hats are so bad.

Many great suggestions on here, thanks guys. I have decided to go with a waxed cotton Filson Packer hat. My only question now is: Tin Cloth or Shelter Cloth? If I get the darker Shelter Cloth, am I going to be surprised by how thin it is when it comes in?

The shelter cloth packer is fairly stiff & not much thinner than the tin cloth. The brim on my 10+yo shelter cloth packer still holds it's shape & it's been stuffed, crushed, crammed behind the seats of various trucks since I got it.

Yeah, I'm really thinking I'll give the Real Deal hats a try too. Not too bad of a price either. Would be a nice option for my tilley, especially with the wire brim.

Good deal

After having several bouts with skin cancer, I call my Tilley my "Anti-Cancer Hat". It does the job of covering up my head and neck really well.

Sometimes the way things look have to take a back seat to practicality...
