Will there be a 2017 forum knife?

Ha, ha! A groan a minute!
So GEC was closed by the time I called on Friday - maybe they were closed all day??
We cannot do two different steels - it would be a small nightmare in that small factory!
We will have a poll on the handle material (I like the idea of black wool micarta, but, it might be itchy . . . . . . . . . heh!).
Anyway, more to come after I talk to Bill.

I was 90% joking when I suggested wool micarta, but the idea has grown on me. Camillus' suggestion of black wool really would be perfect, and I've never seen wool micarta before.

According to this, the result could be pretty cool...

I like the idea of using black wool, and I also like that it isn't common :), but maybe wool is not coarse enough to produce a micarta with a distinctive patterned feel, like canvas or burlap? If not, we could try using a textured woven wool that would produce a visual pattern - most knitted wool looks like herringbone. Or just go for a polished look.

Someone who knows their micarta chime in with some expertise.

I like tweed too, but what pattern? Some of them look a lot nicer than others.

I did a bit more searching and found this UK company producing a wool micarta they call 'solidwool'.

But is that the kind of look that people have in mind? I think I could go for something that was knitted/tweed ahead of this, but there doesn't seem to be much around to choose from

This thread has been a fun read! Especially that last page lol. I am subscribing to the school of folks that are trusting Charlie to handle this, grateful that he is willing, and just looking forward to reaping the benefits of that choice and considering myself lucky to do so. This is going to be one sweet knife :)

I'll get one regardless, however, the black wool sounds and looks nice. So many pages and wants, I have no idea where we're at right now.

waynorth waynorth I look forward to your response after speaking with Bill. I'd more than willing to help, whichever way I can, with this year's BF knife.

Can we then also have a vote for blade steel?

Early on my vote was for natural material for covers, but black wool micarta sounds very cool.

 to whoever suggested it first

I've been busy and not around for quite a while. Happy happy surprise when I checked in and found this thread. I'm totally in! This will be my 4th year in a row. I love the Forum Knives! That's it's going to be an irregular TC Barlow makes this one super awesome. Thanks Charlie, Jack, and Liam for your continued efforts!

I had a talk with Bill yesterday about our forum knife's handles.
He answered my questions about the differences between canvas and linen, and other micartas.
I asked again what the least expensive (but attractive) handle material would be, and he reminded me that canvas micarta, hands down. It works perfectly with a "brushed" finish, which would extend over the whole knife. It is available in natural (tan) and OD (olive drab).
Next in line would be Linen, which would have more shine, and finer visual texture, and comes in Red, OD, and Black. Any other options start raising the price, which kinda goes against the various mission statements the we have brought forward.
I will re-state the general idea here:
We should make a knife that is traditional, usable, beautiful and affordable. It should be affordable enough that anyone here on BF can at least be tempted, and still have enough money left over for dinner! It should be beautiful enough to show off with pride, eminently usable (proven), and traditional, (micarta being around for a long time now!:p)
It would be costly and painful to try and order a special micarta, and the quality/durability would not be as good!
It looks to me like we should use the 5 choices above for our poll.
Your turn, my friends!

Sounds good, can we have pics of examples in the poll thread? I'm thinking red linen, but the natural canvas sounds good too, but if we get some pics of the actual material that would help me decide which to vote on.

Thanks again for all you are doing waynorth waynorth !

My collection is woefully lacking in micarta examples, especially these mentioned examples. Is there someone out there who can provide comparative pictures of them. Preferably on finished knives?

Those who scooped up the recent run of Bullnoses might have a good visual demonstration/comparison at their disposal.

I only picked up one in the OD linen and I have a fixed blade with OD canvas. If no one gets around to it before I do, I'll post a comparison pic between the two.
