Winter Camping Contest

Nice recovery Stabman.

Thanks. :)

well, since there are 2 days left, there is still room for more entries.

This will be the last one from me, I promise! :D

The tree that defeated the D'Eskabar was taunting me and the D'EskaTracker.
Even in my dreams, I could hear it's laughter...so today, honour demanded that I go and rectify the situation!

As you can see, yet more warm air blew in, melting the snow and turning the ground to thick, deep mud:

I used a saw to free it from the ground...sadly, the root split in half; I guess I stressed it when trying to rip it from the ground a couple days back. :(
However, it was still vanquished; time for the D'EskaTracker to get its licks in while I held it still:

Here it lies atop a rock, now beaten into submission and reformed as a walking staff:

When the root split, it gave up its trophy...the piece of blade that it had so viciously ripped from my beautiful knife.
Here it is, alongside the D'EskaTracker:

And that is truly, finally it!
I am all adventured out for the remainder of the month.
It has been a blast though.

Yup, 24's looking good SM. Gotta say though, was hoping you woulda left the recurves on it.

I got a Griptilian Tracker. Didnt break, somebody just thought this was a good idea (not me).;)

Sharpening it as it was would have been an interesting chore.
That Griptilian looks all kinds of funky. Looks like it has a finger choil thrown into the mix for good measure. ;)
Probably the only one like that, I'd imagine.

that is way cool that you found the missing piece - and it was in 1 piece.

It was a neat find for sure. :)
Thinking I should find a use for it; perhaps a really, really tiny knife could be made of it.
Wouldn't require much in the way of handle material.

I was gonna ask if you found the piece but there is my answer. I was also gonna ask if that broke off in one piece or two pieces. It looks like it could have been two with the double recurve. Thanks for sharing.

I was wondering those same things as well.
I was thinking it might have been two pieces, but the smoothness of the break made me think it could be a single piece.

Turned out it was embedded in the side of the root, right where the angle of approach was the absolute worst...which makes a whole lot of sense.

Yeah woulda been more difficult leaving the recurves, but damn it woulda looked slick. :D I woulda done it with stones I believe, would have taken a bit longer no doubt and harder to do correctly .

Thats for sure. Usable garbage, bought it for parts. Got a laugh when seen the pics of it. Choil I get (kinda), not so much the notch. I actually like the GINORMOUS thumbstud though.:D

Stabman, awesome repurposing of your 24....though it is sad to see one break like that.

Not really winter camping, as I'm in my backyard in shorts - in NH, in February - but I thought y'all would get a kick outta this.

Couldn't get the fam to join in, as they are pooped from vacation week.....but I'm still enjoying it with a libation or two opened with the 11. Fire is brought to you by the RBK and the 16.....with a little help from my Spartan Difensa. Carry on.

Nice fire. I probably should go out and light one since warm weather is on the way, but the stupid pollen count is already on the rise. We might get another frost, but probably not. This winter was entirely too mild here.

POLLEN?!?! Be another month her before buds start showing.....it's sugaring season here.....though that's gonna be tough given the weather. The maples need freezing nights and warmer days f = or the sap to run. My prognosis: buy last year's syrup NOW, before prices skyrocket thanks to climate change. Im guessing hat maple syrup's going to be more expensive in the coming months.

I'm actually burning sugar maple in the fire pit right now. The neighbors across the street lost a tree a couple ears ago in a microburst, and I ended up with most of it - damn near a face cord (that is nearly gone :() Smells awesome burning - and pretty damned good just sitting in the woodpile, as well.

Jealous that I can't get the video to work? Someday I will (never) be master of all things computational and Social Media....but until then, I will sit outside by the fire with my laptop like every modern man.
Jealous that you are sitting out on a cool night burning sugar maple.

Sounds heavenly.

I could feel jealous of you having a relaxing spot at home to chill out with a fire. :)
If I start a fire on the balcony, the fire department would have words with me. ;)

Can't even have a charcoal barbeque...has to be propane.

It's pretty great, I'll admit. My knees are quite hot, butnI've got the hood pulled up so my head doesn't freeze. Temp's in the mid-40's ATM. I love fire.....probably goes back to my Neanderthal roots.

That is just a little bit sad......who knew the Mounties were so anti-campfire? Luckily I've a good friend in the local FD; he's vetted and approved my firepit.

Fire good. :)

Watch Quest for Fire to see just how lucky we are fire-wise these days. :D

In regards to the broken 24, it's unfortunate that happened. But the recovery is special here. I kind of like the tracker aspect. Yes, it's less traditional than I usually like, but, I have warmed up to it by now.
However, After looking a bit more I was thinking it could be shaped into a bird and trout style knife, grinding off the guard and adding a choil.

Anyway, i think my point here is; there were so many possibilities, good on you for finding a less thought of fix.

Are you going to replace it at some point?

Absolutely. :)

But that will have to wait till next year...
You see, I bought too many knives last year so, at the end of the year I wrote up and signed an agreement.
It states that if I buy any knives this year, I must spray myself in the eyes with pepper spray, then have my wife kick me in the balls 5 times.
Even though it's the weaker, Canada legal dog repellent, I don't want it in my eyes...and my wife can kick really hard.

I may be able to talk her into buying me one as a present at some point during the year though, especially if I get her something neat.
