Winter Camping Contest

Absolutely. :)

But that will have to wait till next year...
You see, I bought too many knives last year so, at the end of the year I wrote up and signed an agreement.
It states that if I buy any knives this year, I must spray myself in the eyes with pepper spray, then have my wife kick me in the balls 5 times.
Even though it's the weaker, Canada legal dog repellent, I don't want it in my eyes...and my wife can kick really hard.

I may be able to talk her into buying me one as a present at some point during the year though, especially if I get her something neat.

So, your seriously not willing to get maced and kicked in the balls for more knives? You just lost my respect sir.:D

Just get completely black out hammered before she tortures you, it'll be like it never even happened. Trust me.;) Your happy, she's happy-ish, Allz good. Might wake up with night terrors for awhile or lose a ball or two from her not being able to stop kicking you for actually choosing knives over her, but love is temporary, knives are forever. Well unless you break em I guess.;)

That would make a great sig line. :D

I can probably work a "gold for knives" type of deal, at least on the order of the D'Eskabar.
Which actually turned out to be a really handy knife. :)
I was impressed by all of what it managed to do, truth be told.

And by the location in the root where the break happened, I remember that's where I started bashing it with the greatest force and stupidity.
The sun was going down, my back was screaming at me with pain, and I started wailing on it..as in full-on idiot, "Should be on Youtube" level idiocy.
Any sane level of use or even abuse can be handled with a D'Eskabar, that's for sure.

I'm sure that Dtrakabar will serve you well for years to come. I'm sure Kabar would trade you for a new one if wanted to go that route too. Know modded now but proof is still documented here.

It happens. I know I'll have a broken BK in some way shape or form in future. Seems like you put them through the paces as most of us do. Testing their limits. Great knives, but as most things are destructible.

I'll definitely be keeping this one.
For one thing, I feel a definite attachment to it now. :)

For another, I had been planning on making a WSK at some point, and was wondering about how to produce the quarter-round spot so it would actually cut.
Now I know how to go about it.

Life's a learning process, and I generally learn more from making and fixing mistakes than by any other method. ;)

Got out one more time

This wasn't overly primitive but it was fun

Before I even got my pack off I'm greeted by one of our group that had arrived ahead of me and had been collecting firewood and damn near brained himself... ugh talk about disgusting lol nothing like seeing skull when you show up to camp... I said this is pic worthy and he said go ahead I want to see it and I said no you don't (I'm not posting the pic but I have it), No one made fun of me for carrying the FAK this trip :D
Here he is all bandaged up and almost ready to hike out to get stiches

We ate quite well, steaks, hamburgers, hotdogs, green peppers, scallions ramen... it felt like the food wouldn't stop, I'm going to miss winter camping and being able to keep all these comfort foods cold and from spoiling...

The wind changed in the middle of the night and was funneling right through my tarp robbing all the warmth from the quilts, now I'm missing the MSS when I remembered I had my 5x7 MEST with me... problem solved

That and the fact of no bugs crawling all over the food are the best things about winter camping.

I'm actually burning sugar maple in the fire pit right now. The neighbors across the street lost a tree a couple ears ago in a microburst, and I ended up with most of it - damn near a face cord (that is nearly gone :() Smells awesome burning - and pretty damned good just sitting in the woodpile, as well.

GSOM, you should save some chunks of that maple wood for the grill.... I bet it works great for some additional smokey flavor.

Ain't that the truth, the food and us

Yep. :D

Each time I head out from late spring through early fall, I end up having to take more than the maximum dose of antihistamines for up to a week.
No matter how much bug repellant I use, those stupid bugs just keep coming back to bite me some more.
Mostly it's those damned mosquitoes.
Until I got a headlamp, I always got bit by at least one huge spider while foraging for wood during the night.

The outdoors is great, but the insects that live there do their best to demonstrate it's their turf. ;)

Oh man can I relate to the actually being able to breathe when winter camping. I have had allergy and sinus problems all my life. I think I would rather be cold than all stuffed up. ;-)

That would make a great sig quote. :) However, as much as I love my sharp things, if there is one thing that I love even more it is, yeah, those guys.

At my age, and with no plans to have any more children, I can safely say......I'd sacrifice one for a really high end knife......for sure. :D

OK, so the panel is in deliberation. Winner announcement forthcoming!!!! Thanks everyone willing to battle the suckage and contributing to this thread!!!

I got enough kicks in the balls over the years to know that I wish to avoid them.
The last time was a full-power knee that hit both squarely when someone missed on stepping past for a throw.
Spent some quality minutes rolling around on the ground unable to stand...fun! :D

Good luck to everyone, this was a fun one

Good luck fellas. This was fun but also reminded me that I can't get out as much as I would like. It all good, someday this little guy who taking up all my time and energy will be my kick as backpacking buddy.

I took a couple pics with my iPhone that day if I need time stamps. They should have it in the photos data. I just realized I left those out.
