Winter kith 2016/2017. WooHoo! My knife arrived!

I have German Shepherd who is a great dog, except he barks like a maniac when someone comes around the house at all--yesterday he went bananas and I discounted it, but this morning I found a package on the front door, and then I knew what he had been barking at. I opened the box kind of in a vacuum and wasn't even thinking about a knife from the KITH, but that's what it was! I received this beauty from Mike aka WKFL--which I learned is for Work Knife Florida--The fit and finish on this knife is excellent, and it arrived extremely sharp. I also like the sheath a lot--he told me he stitched it with a Tippman, which I don't know what that is, maybe a sewing machine for leather??? AT any rate Mike has some challenges similar to myself, as he was seriously injured medically several years back--but despite these challenges he is making fine knives again IMO.

Thanks again Mark--I appreciate your participation in this KITH.

Thank you for the kind words and I am so glad that you like it.

OK guys, here are the pics as promised of the knife I received from Leif. This knife is very clean and shows great craftmanship. Also it is very sharp. Just wondering Leif, what steel did you use. I see a bit of a hamon starting, but it is very faint.

And a picture of the very nice stamp work on the sheath!

By the way, I finally used my DSLR to take some pics instead of my phone. MAJOR improvement in my picture taking ability lol

I have a knife from Lief. His work is super clean. It set a standard for me to aspire to.

Since you guys can see in the pictures I have 2 10" 6 foot pieces of curly maple. I was wondering if I should make the tabletop that I had planned or cut it up and send it to get stabilized and use it for handle material? It has pretty nice figure, I got it on clearance for $3 a board foot

Thank you Warren, i appreciate the kind words.

Bartlett, it's W2 from Aldo. And the hamon was a surprise to me, totally unintentional clayless hamon.

If the curl on that maple is tight I'd get it stabilized for scales.

I'd do enough for 10 knives or so. Maybe have some died black, or red?

That's a good idea. I think I'll get some dyed black red and green. Thanks. I've got more than enough. I'll pick out some good spots and check the humidity of the wood

Mine arrived Friday, just got to taking pictures last night.

Thank you very much Travis, I'll put it to good use.

WooHoo my knife is here!! Wow this knife is awesome. Gives me something to try and imitate. Excellent finish on the blade and a nice hamon. I really like the guard and the handle is unique and just beautiful.

The sheath is great as well, I noticed how the pieces were carefully spliced together. Gives me a model to strive toward.

Very excited about receiving this knife.

Warren if you could send me some details on this thing so I can brag on it.

I received my knife from Bartlett Blades last week, but since I was on the road for work, then gone to the auto show over the weekend I delayed posting until I could take the time to take a couple good pictures. The knife is in a profile that I find enjoyable to use skinning and the grinds are well executed. It arrived quite sharp and the hand rubbed satin finish was very consistent. The handle construction of multiple materials took obvious effort and the fit up is very good. Thank you Jeremy, I'll enjoy it for years to come.

This is hitachi white#2, Rc62. The wood is curly Koa, the guard is wrought iron, and the spacer is fluted unidirectional carbon fibre. The edge was brought down to about 0.005", convened, then sharpened at 10dps. I wanted to show off the edge this steel can take. It can be brought back to 0.010" or so if you need a more durable edge. I use smaller knives as slicing tools, so the geometry reflects that.

I am underimpressed with the hamon. I was expecting more. It doesn't have a great contrast. I used the hybrid polish that I described in the hamon thread. I think I over etched the blade. I have a lot more experience with W2 with hamon. My methods didn't translate as well with this steel. The ashi is impressive, but it doesn't pop.

Yes I was highly impressed with the edge. The actual edge is almost unnoticeable by the eye which is deceiving at first but it is very sharp. I was also wondering what the spacer was. Glad to know. Thanks.

I meant to touch up the spacer before I sent it, and polish it to show the marbling in the pattern, but forgot. I think I got my handle material mixed up too. I have stabilized and natural Koa. I thought I used the stabilized, but this finished more like the unstabilized stock. The knife has a lifetime warranty so just let me know if there are any problems. The blade is sanded to 2500g.

Just got my kith knife in and I am really pleased with it.

The fit and finish is excellent.

Thanks again to everyone who was in this Kith.

I hope to participate in the next one that comes around.

Miguel, I'm glad it got there all good--and especially glad that you like it. I look forward to the next KITH also.

Regards--Don

I think everyone has their knife now, except me. I know there was a mixup in shipping and it's on its way.

Thank you everyone for participating. This has been a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

If you haven't received your knife, let me know. Stacy can un sticky this now too. I'll post my knife when it arrives.
