Winter kith?

I am unfortunately going to have to bow out of this KITH with as much grace as I can muster ...

My heat treater boogered up my latest batch of blades and I'm just not confident that I will be able to have more done in time. I'd rather wait till the next one rolls around so that I can focus on putting together a high-quality product rather than something rushed. Really hope it's not too much of an inconvenience for you guys.

I will have to back out as well. Head back to school Friday and didn't get it done. Good luck to everyone and enjoy the knives!

I am on track, but may have to use AEB-L instead of the Hitachi Blue#2 I had intended, as the blank is still at the machine shop getting surface ground to thickness.

Just checked my email and JT I think is doing the final tempering on my blade sometime today and shipping it back. He said it was right at 61RC for 3 tests and came our perfectly straight after the quench. I just got my small wheel attachment in and set up last night and a tool rest just for it. Anxious to get it back and start finishing it up. I've already got the bolsters roughed out so should be on schedule for the 2nd deadline. I wish I was already set up for doing leather sheaths as this one I think would be suited better for leather, but kydex will have to do.

Yep I did the heat treat and first temper on wensday and the second temper Thursday morning and shipped right after. So you should be getting if any time. I also gave it a 3 step grain refining/normalizing treatment befor heat treating.

The blade is very nice and I would personally be very happy to receive it.

I'm going to have to drop out. I'm not happy with a couple of things on my blade. Maybe next time.

I was grinding after the first heat treat and noticed my hamon dipped down to the edge near the ricasso. So I did it over and got a dog leg warp where my bevels began. I clamped it to a flat bar and tempered once, no luck the warp stuck. On the second temper I counter shimmed under the warp and it came out straight as an arrow. Whew.

I have been enamored with the 'homage to Loveless' style blades of late--I started two knives and am wanting advice on which one to put into the KITH--on both of these knives I was still in the learning phase of the guard approach to the front bolster/guard---I have one that is out of Alabama Damascus blank--a really nice random pattern one, and the guard/bolster is split and the top of the blade shows through the split--and another one of D-2, the Damascus has a nice walnut set of scales and a brass guard and pins--the D-2 has brown Micarta, the guard/bolster is one where the blade passes through it--the actual (Micarta from a BF's supplier) and silver tubes anchoring it to the blade, the damascus guy is more beautiful components, but I think I did a better job of pulling off the guard/bolster on the D-2 blade one. They are both the best work I am capable of at this time--just looking for input on which one to through in the KITH hat.

Thanks for the updates guys. I'll edit the list later today and remove those who know they are going to be out.

I redid the hamon polish on my hutch knife. It has incredible ashi in it, but the line itself is pretty plain. I straightened the wrought iron for the guard, and hopefully will mill it to fit this evening.

Fish: it's completely up to you. Both sound like great knives. Flip a coin if you have to. ;)

I think this is going to be my KITH offering.

Didn't pay close enough attention while grinding/rough shaping the handle so I get to learn how much effort it takes to grind off the maple burl and start over on the handle. May not be able to finish it and the sheath in time, but we'll see. Put me in the "hopeful" category....

Put it in the freezer, and a couple whacks with a hammer will take care of the handle.

Well, we were encouraged to challenge ourselves, and I am certainly doing that. I got the handle assembled last night. This is my first kitchen knife, first stick tang, and first multi piece handle. I need to shape this, but I'm torn between octagonal and oval. The saya will also be a first for me.

That's a piss off. What irritates me is when I forget to stamp my makers mark.
