WIP give away knife - concluded & winner picked

What a handsome knife....and what a lucky winner!

Thanks for the great GAW.

Andrew

Great day to win!

Congrats man, that's a fine looking knife, and thanks Bluntcut for taking us along on this journey! It's been very interesting as always. :)

I am very grateful to ppl on this forum for sharing knowledge and willing to teach others. I've learned and continue to learn (many via lurking) from here...

And certainly am appreciative of your watching + compliments + inputs. I sure enjoyed doing this gaw wip.

Post-wip back fill, here is #2 (top - 52100) & #5 (bottom - cpm-m4) after sanded with 100 grit. During 4th of July bbq dinner, I shown #2 to friends and on spot tested by exerted over 75 lbs (or whatever both arms & body lean against) of downward cut pressure. No problem, this knife handle is strong. #5 knife handle is in leopard wood wedge/space with yellowheart wood, sadly left & right scale were not symmetrical paired.

Congrats to Cautioning. Those backups are lookin good bluntcut, hope they perform well for you.

Congratulations cautioning! You got yourself a nice knife for sure!

Again kudos to BC for his generosity! Atta babe!

34 --- cautioning is the winner of the gaw, congratulation! You've until July 7th to claim this gaw, otherwise fall through to the next entry.

Hahaha.... I tried to get entry '34'.... missed it by one. :(

So, if "cautioning" mysteriously disappears in the next few days, I still got a shot?

(Just kidding of course). Congrats and enjoy the knife... looks like a good one!

Learned lots too!

Thanks for all kudos! Gaw is on its way (via usps) to "Cautioning".

Curtis (cbwx34) - take a random comfort knowing that you always have the magic #.

Chris A - #2 turns out OK. As picture, it's about to fail slice catalog paper and I am tired. I'll finish it up and then let it flight ;)

Uh oh cbwx34

Thanks to all for the congratulations. I am crazy looking forward to trying this out, it will be my first custom and first m4 knife! I feel so lucky to have won. This community is so great.

Thanks again for the informative thread. Congrats to the winner. It's probably best I didn't win. Kitchen knives don't have an easy life in our kitchen :)

Turn out nice! That's a lot of cardboard ! no wonder you became tired. Photo on post#104 shows it's a beauty indeed!

It's strange that my browser won't load the images properly (came empty boxes). Safari on iPad :( but I could see it by copy/paste the URL of

Here are #5 and #2 handles (still wet of from 1st coat of tung oil) - lol, they look & feel a lot better in hand. Today, I did some carbide scratch test on #2 and (other 52100 blades in the same batch). Well, I am somewhat disappointed, that this blade has scratch resistant equivalent to a 60rc. Oh lamo, I broke the tang and now this:o.

Chris A - still want #2 in 52100 at 60rc knife?

Heavyhanded - email me if you want to beat #5 in cpm-m4 at 65rc to death at work?

Why would you disappointed? The performace on the cardboard looks good!
Yes, I'd like to test it out :)

Side note on the tang, it might be due to the holes. If no holes, perhaps it won't get broken. In any case, you have tested it well at 75lbs, that is not an issue I guess, it's not a bushcraft knife anyway.

I re-heat-treated #1 blade (52100 petty) with sub-zero and tested it against cardboard. It didn't perform any better than #2. But #1 is about 62rc and the edge want to draw blood (nicked me today) sharp. #2 missed its rc & scary-sharp target. Chris - I will make a new 52100 util slicer for you, hence wait time (unless you insist on #2). Tomorrow, I will receive a bunch of natural wood handles. After that a HF portable metal bandsaw. Too bad this weekend is gone, there are so many more cool steels (cpm-154, k390, m390, so on...) & knives waiting for me to mangle. Also I will get some LN2 (liquid nitrogen) for cryogenic heat treating - more of 30 minutes dunk than 24hrs soak. Heheh, another weekend will be here soon enough.

Oh, sharpening 52100 is so easy. Whatever lead to 1K (dmt E or waterstone) -> balanced strop -> clean shave but still pull a bit -> 1um diamond -> 0.1um poly diamond -> one pass clean painless shaving. LOL, can't say the same for cpm-m4 at 65rc (diamond/cbn forever!), where it's cool for sharpening-nut but will be a challenge for others.

52100 petty (temp handle) & util slicer (3rd coat of tung oil).

This thread is wandering... shall I ask mod to close it?

Blunt,

Appreciate very much the gesture! I'll wait, no point insisting on something that the maker is not proud of :D you have the say, not me :p, but I don't want too much troubling you either.

With many goodies coming your way, it seems that you'll be having fun, and I guess that's what's important for you ...

BTW, as OP, you should be able to close it. i think Edit -> Advance .. Let me try on old thread I started & confirm back!

Edit to add: non paying member doesn't have close thread option I guess :o
