WIP - Starting a new batch, all D2 Updated 4/25/11 New Progress

The only problem I see with those are they seem to work our a cam not a screw like jonny's. I think the screw would be more reliable and useful.

The de-sta-co's are less than ideal for this function. Not to say they would not work. Those darned things contributed to a 1/4" end mill sized hole in the back of my hand, so maybe I am just prejudiced.

Good looking bunch Jonny!

I myself take so long to finish just one knife that seeing this many makes me dizzy.

Johnny I love the "tip" tip. I forgot that one on my last batch, and paid a small price. Great clamp as well. I'll be ordering a few of those for my production Machine shop. We have the loose clamp style already and use them all the time.

I'm going to have to swing by and pick up one of your knives.

And Tim I think one of those will be intermittently missing from my welding shop as well. ;)

Carl, I never realized you were over in Redwood City:thumbup:

Thanks Patrice! Seeing this many knives on my bench makes my wife dizzy too! It means I'm not in the house helping with the kids!!:D

Is that the sound of small children calling to there father? No, must be a squeaky drill bit needing a shot of oil.

Nah, just pulling your leg my friend.:D

Great effort Jon, inspiring.

Lol, at least their not infants!!:D The girls are 9 and 6. The wife works nights so once I get their homework done and make sure they're bathed and fed I can sneak out to the shop...........until one of them comes screaming because the other one hit her upside the head with a barbie doll!!

Fred, this is just the beginning my friend......wait til I put that bubble jig to work tonight and over the next week or so:thumbup: Then we'll start seeing some progress.

Spent most of my shop time last night after work doing some design work that needed to get done, so I didn't get much grinding in, but tonight after work I was able to finish up bevel grinding on one of the Two Finger Wharnies so here are a couple progress pics. If I can get enough time to complete one bevel every two days or so it won't be long before I'm ready for heat treat:thumbup: I'll try to keep up the pace.

I am hoping one of those mini drop points has my name on it! Nice work as always Johnny.

You've inspired me to stop experimenting with folders and different designs for a bit a whip out a batch like you have. I've scribed 9 out on some steel ready to go. Can't wait to get cutting (even if it's with an angle grinder >.<).

That's awesome Tim! I figure there is no better way to learn than just diving in and going for it! Your WIP threads have been very cool. I'm looking forward to the next one..........with a whole bunch of knives in it!:D

BTW, I have a bandsaw now, but I cut out a whole bunch of blades with an angle grinder when I first started. As long as you use the thin cutting discs and a full face shield in case the disc shatters you should be good to go. The steel heats up a whole lot more than with a saw but I found the angle grinder to be pretty darn effective at rough profiling.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting my those blades back for HT and actually finishing my WIP's!

Yeah, I've shattered a few disks. Cutting the titanium for my folder WIP was a mission. The 7mm thick RWL i used for my chopper was pretty hard core too.

Well, I got some shop time today. Not as much as I would have liked, but still productive. I got a couple more blades profiled so I'm now about a third of the way through my pre heat treat grinding.

Here are some pics:

Bevel grinding done from today. The thicker of the two Mini Drop Points will be getting a swedge. The other is one of the two thinner .118" thick blades and I decided to take it all the way to the spine. Going to see how good of a slicer I can make out of it.

I also took the extra meat from the tip area of the Two Finger Wharnie today to give it it's final shape. I decided to square off the tip on this one to give it some more strength, unlike my previous Two Finger Wharnies where I left a super sharp needle point that could easily snap off. It looked wicked but I wanted to try something more functional this time around.

Looks good! I like what you've done with the wharnie. What grit do you finish you've knives at. do you go any finer after ht?

I started cutting my banks yesturday! I'll start a WIP when I've got them all out.

Looking good Johnny.
I don't know how the most recent posts slipped by me.

Today I got a little more bevel grinding done on another Mini Drop Point. This bevel has been finished to 65x grit with a Norton Norax belt, about 400.

Also got started rough cutting handle material today.

My current favorite belts for grinding bevels. 3M Cubitron gold 60's and 3M Regal 120's, both ceramic. They wear really well and allow for good control.

Cutting out handle material on the band saw. I try to do it in decent size batches so I can clean up all the dust at the same time.

Awesome wip Jonny! You are moving right along, I've been meaning to try one of those 3m 120 ceramic belts, now I definitely will have to order some in :D
