WIP - Starting a new batch, all D2 Updated 4/25/11 New Progress

Didn't get too much done today because I went to take the kids to school this morning and the drive shaft on the garage door opener snapped:( Two hundred dollars and a few hours later I had installed a new opener and cut up the old one with an angle grinder so I finally got around to doing what I was supposed to be doing today.....grinding!:D

Once I got started I got the profile and swedge ground on the first of the larger knives in this batch, a newly modified XL. This new tweak on the Mini Drop Point XL has a wider blade and a more substantial handle. With a spine thickness of .176" I think this one is gonna be a stout little bugger! Looking forward to finishing one of these.

Here are a couple shots.

damn, this thing looks like a stout little worker...i might have to try and snag one of these up to compliment the mini drop point :D
awesome work

Looks like there's going to be a delay here in the D2 WIP thread, my work load has just increased.

The batch of CPM 154 knives showed up from heat treat today. There are several that need to be finished first for existing orders before I can go back to work on the D2's. There are only two blades left to grind in the D2 batch though, so maybe I can squeeze those in and get that one sent out to heat treat just to keep things moving forward.

More blades than I've ever had in progress at one time:eek:

Awesome Jon.

If it were me, I would grind those other D2's and get them out of there so you can focus on finishing the 154's.

I like those wharnies Jon. What are those neon scales in the background?

Hey J, the orange ones are just standard, could be the lighting that makes them seem neon. As far as the green ones go, check post #38 in this thread on page 2. They are toxic green from Alpha Knife Supply. I'm looking forward to getting some installed.

Hey Johnny, You have been busy! Maybe you answered this already but what is the story behind the Kitchen looking blade between 10 & 12?

Aaaand... Which one is mine? :D

Ryan,
That's a paring knife I drew up and am making for the wife. Don't know if I'll make more or not, I need to see how it turns out first.

As far as which one is your........depends on how long you want to wait:D There will be some available from the CPM 154 batch in a couple weeks, or we can go with one of the D2 models a bit farther out. Email me and we'll start figuring things out:thumbup:

Hey Chris,
Your Mini Drop Point is one of the ones in the top of the photo, still pre heat treat, but I should be able to get them sent out within a week. Only two more blades to bevel grind in that batch:thumbup: Send me an email, we will need to talk handle details soon.;)

Damn this has been an interesting thread. Your work looks better every time I come in here.

Jonny

Why is the guard there on that knife? Were you working on the plunge line?

Okay, I got slowed down a bit by the last batch that came in from heat treat. Had to finish a few projects, but finished up bevels and a few other things on this D2 batch and they are off to heat treat. I'll continue this thread when they get back and finishing work starts.

Ok, the all D2 batch just got in from heat treat this afternoon. I opened the box and found this nice tidy bundle of 13 D2 blades inside:thumbup: I have a couple orders to finish up and the I'll be diving into these and get this WIP back in full swing.

More pictures to come as things progress!

Got some time tonight and started a little bit on the D2 batch. I guess my wife gets priority since I started finishing hers first. I usually go with a very fine machine finish on my knives, but for Jojo's paring knife I wanted to do a hand rubbed satin, so here are some progress pics, only to 180 grit so far. Getting vertical belt scratches out by hand, even 400 grit, is no easy task. This took some elbow grease. That D2 is TOUGH!!

I also started to finish one of the little Two Finger Wharnie's so there is a pic of that as well.

Not really. It's down near the bottom of toughest cutlery steels. It is pretty wear-resistant though! Take it to a higher grit before HT next time, you know how clean Brad keeps 'em so you may as well save a little time and paper
