I've been carrying one form or another of the american folder(Buck 110 ect) since I was old enough to walk out my mamma's back door and not until recently had I never had anyone, even occasional nice conversations with the highway patrolman, ask me about it..but a "Security" company asked me to take off my Leatherman because it "looked like a weapon". I gave them my reply as a resignation from their company. Nuff said.
I would have complied with them. Then buy some really sweet juicy fruits. Chuck out all the knives in the pantry and leave my Leatherman there... See who will use it.
Actually I haven't revealed or used my knife in the office at all. If I had to cut something, I'd ask around for a cutter (the one which you can retract the blade and break off the tip in sections as they get blunt. Whatchamacallit?) But when my colleagues find out eventually, I would use some of the classic retorts here like...
"because I don't have claws"
"It's just a tool, like a pair of scissors. I don't see why you have this weapon fixation."
"It's difficult to carry a pair of scissors in my pocket."
"to cut things...duh!!"
and the Number 1 classic retort: "You know, even Peter Pan carries a knife!"
Well, as Absintheur said that we should educate, not alienate, I would say I want to be a useful citizen. I don't know when an emergency will happen that will require the use of a knife. And if I could save a life because I was prepared, it would have been worth it, rather than not being able to save a person just because I bowed to public opinion on knife carrying.
