Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

Bit of advice. YMMV. I mean, for Scagel's sakes...after all the claims that have been made that you have no credibilty, you giving advice about outdoor gear that appears in a picture of you twerking does nothing to dispel those claims.

Seriously, I thought we were done with this.

PS:

The one or more posters that mentioned that some women are looked down upon if they LIKE or USE firearms worse off, gasp, knives is true. It may even come from women in their own age group and not just the younger crowd! I see it as an older lady at 64 years old from some ladies. It can come from some men too. You do not get it all of the time but there is bias out there about knives.

I posted about a few knives in the past elsewhere and not too long ago on a gun forum about this very issue. Women, men and children learning to use knives safely is a good thing! A couple of old knives from my late husband and some new ones were discussed too.

Right now, I carry a Buck 110 folding hunting knife (50th Anniversary one.) but I like fixed blades more and more too.

I have a Buck Ranger Skinner (F.B.), a Buck 55 knife, and a larger Buck knife (Vanguard) that I gave back to my MT born and raised husband but I still use it on and off. I do not hunt but it goes with us when we camp and travel. I keep it in the den when we are home.

I use a couple of other ones from my MT husband. (I am a remarried widow here.) I gifted some knives to my MT husband, to some close friends, my older brother, my older sister did not want a knife, and for a good cause (Charity) that belonged to my late husband.

I am not a collector and I do not own safe queens. I am not knocking people who do collect. My husband uses what he owns and he has his favorite hunting knives too.

My older hands are more used to specific knives now. I prefer small to medium fixed blades more and more. I am using a couple of my husband's fixed blade knives not just the one Buck Skinner above or the 110 in my fanny pack too.

Folding knives have to be easy for me to open. I think that some are really pretty but if they are hard for me to open - it would be more of a decoration.

I always have a knife on me when I work in the yard or go out now too. Fanny pack, in my pocket, and/or sometimes in my purse. I no longer own or shoot handguns. I still shoot a couple of lever action and single shot bolt action rifles.

I love the pictures that all of you put up here too. Nice forum - thank you!

Hello,

I would NOT dismiss using a knife for self defense if you did not have a gun on you or any other TOOL to defend yourself from the bad guy or from a loose, vicious, feral or domesticated dog.

Would a firearm be better to use in most cases? Yes! But you might not be able to have a gun on you.

Would a camp axe, hatchet or tomahawk work better than a knife if you had NO gun on you? Yes, but most people do not carry an axe, hatchet or tomahawk on them 24/7.

Heck, a baseball bat, a pitchfork, etc. would work but we can't carry them as easily as we can a knife. We CAN carry a knife on a belt, in a pocket, in your fanny pack, purse, briefcase, etc.

I think that a knife works better than pepper spray. I would go for the knife!

Your mileage may vary. No problem!

Pack it where you can get to it easily and NOT digging around in a messy purse or in a pocket full of stuff!

Pack it on your belt, in your pocket or in a fanny pack - an ordinary one or a ccw one. Now, if you have a ccw purse or a regular purse with a pocket left completely empty shy of the one knife - that may work for you too.

I do not think that carrying a knife has anything to do with your gender either.

I do not think that carrying a knife makes you any more of a woman or a man when it comes to your looks or sex appeal. IT is a tool!

Using a tool safely, a knife in this case, and having one on you means that you are using your brain and common sense. You are prepared if you need to use one and not only for self defense where a handgun can't be carried.

I think that knives can be good looking, utilitarian and beautiful just as any other tool or object can be - a handgun, a rifle, a sail boat, a power boat, a well designed house, art work, material for a dress, suit or sportswear, china, glass, stainless steel, silver, furniture, a truck, a car, etc.

To each their own - whatever trips your trigger!

I think that men and women should carry a knife and/or scissors on them. I think that girls and boys should be TAUGHT how to use a knife safely just as they are taught any other skill or how to use any tool around the house, in the woods, and in their daily lives.

You can't always ccw or oc if you are into handguns or if you no longer own or shoot them. You can't carry a lever action rifle or any other rifle on you as you can pack one or two knives ON your body or in your fanny pack, purse or briefcase.

I think that women, men and children should be encouraged to own and use knives!

Let them pick them out and choose what suits their taste. Let them be sure that the knife FITS their hands just as a good handgun or rifle or any other TOOL would fit THEIR HANDS since they are the one who will be using the knife.

Encourage people to carry a knife but don't shove it down their throats. You either like them or not!

You may come to using and paying more attention to one or more knives as a young lady/gentleman, a middle aged person or as an older person.

Having any tool on you is better than having NO tool on you no matter where you are or what is going on around you. That can be a knife or not.

There are many pretty knives in this long thread.

Thank you for sharing your pictures.

Sincerely,

Cate

Thanks Catherine... I agree! Great to have another woman's opinion. I love knives and sounds like you do too. :-)

:-) I have a fanny pack but have not used it yet...however, I know that they are very convenient and great to have. Bucks are great knives! Do you have a picture of yours? Would love to see it!

Hello again,

I think that you picked out some nice knives too.

I do not know ALL of the knife companies out there and private custom knife makers but I am learning. Ha!

I never owned a Texas toothpick knife from any company.

Is it hard to open?

I may look for one and see how it works for me here in town.

I LOVE the blue on it too. That blue on your Case TT looks just as nice as one that I saw in a pretty blue/green (Like the ocean.) too!

Nope..none of them are hard to open. The BIG douk douk is though..but not my little Douk Douk. I JUST received my order from Knife Works...wow! Can't wait to post these beauties! I mean, I just got them as I am writing this... I'll take a quick pic (won't be fancy) so you can see..they are gorgeous! You would like Opinel's by the way for ease of opening... Just a second and I will get pics and post here of what i just got!

Okay..I JUST got these in the mail a few moments ago...Beautiful knives! Queen Cutlery and Opinel...

No, I do not have pictures online of mine but if you go to the Buck website you can find them.

I do not know if I am allowed to say where they came from or not.

One store had the Vanguard in Ronan, MT (I/we sold some of our former guns there - full in store credit. We did not take/want a check.) and two stores here in Missoula, MT had the others. The third store did not have what I wanted in stock. These Buck knives were made in Idaho... they are not the imported ones.

My MT husband posted his knives many years ago on an old gun forum (Not his former, own forum from the 90's or my old one.) and I am not sure if they are still up there with some of our rifles. That public forum was sold. My late husband never put pictures up of our stuff online.

My MT husband bought a SECOND Buck 110 Folding Hunter - 50th Anniversary knife after I opened up mine. Grin.

Vanguard - This is the one that I gave back to him but I can use it if I want to use it.

Ranger Skinner Fixed Blade

The 55

I have only had my nature - scenery pictures put up by him on former private and old, open forums. Up north, Glacier, the Yaak, Rock Creek - mountain goats, big horn sheep, elk, moose, deer, bears, eagles, lake, river and mountain pictures plus he put up knife and gun pictures.

I never personally put them on the computer from his camera or from his camera to those old forums - private and public. I am not a computer whiz and I only know the basics. He did it for me.

I wanted him to put up his custom made knife and a few others on that old gun forum but he did not do that. He does not post on forums. He gave them up some time ago!

Maybe I can convince him to use THIS forum and post them for me.

Have a good Saturday!

I haven't read the entire thread, but I do feel that more people in general, women included, should learn responsible knife use. Whether or not they will actually carry is another thing. I'm the only knife person in my family, and I only know one other guy who carries any knife. One Xmas, I gave everyone a Victorinox Classic, and maybe half the people in my family actually carried them (some still do). My late father always had some kind of knife...he was blue collar. Usually he used an old Buck 110 with the convex grind, and/or a carbon steel Camillus pocketknife of some sort. My elderly mother has always carried a Victorinix pruning knife, the single-bladed sheepsfoot w/chisel grind, and for the past few years, one of the Classics I gave her. But she's really not "into" knives at all.

Whether they carry or not, if more people learned about responsible use of knives as kids, there would be fewer people who have a bug up their butts about (responsible) people carrying knives. I think it's always cool to see women who love and appreciate good knives. But I also believe there are some people, male or female, who should never carry a knife, if they lack the maturity to be responsible with them.

Wow!

Those are sweet knives!

A few of the guys that were nice and smart on that old gun forum owned a few of your brands.

I have to show these new knives to my husband too.

Thanks.

Hey Jim! I'm not trying to hog the conversation here, as I've made many replies to people in the past little bit..but had to reply to yours.. I agree wholeheartedly! And thanks for all that you said...you are so correct! There are some who should never carry a knife...that is also a very true statement.

Thanks, Cate! Yes..these are not the best pics, as I took them really fast with little thought to the arrangement or perfection of them, but wanted you to see them. Will probably take better ones later and post elsewhere on here. I was hurrying so that you would get to see before you left or got off of here :-) I ordered them from KnifeWorks and the owner, who is on here, has been so nice to help me! They had an offer where you can get an Opinel with something engraved on the blade..so I had "Blade Girl" added to it just for fun! BTW I'm telling everyone on my Facebook (i have tons of fans and followers) and in my youtube videos about BladeForums :-) On Youtube, I have nearly 30,000 subs...so hopefully it will help bring in more business for BladeForums here... would be great! I've met so many good people and many of the mods have been so helpful to me, advising me and so forth... Morrow, Karda and more... they are good people and glad to help in any way I can. Blessings to you Cate and it is sooo nice to meet you. You're a sweetheart!
