After tons and tons of work on the scotch brite wheel and the buffer here is the finished clam shell for the pommel. There are a bunch more to go on the guard, hanger guard, pommel nut and sheath frog. :-)

It looks pretty doesn't it?

Here I finished shaping the handle. I ground into the stag on the high spots so we could see the nice deep amber colors under the surface.

A look at the other side.

After a few hours of hand sanding and some buffing here are the finished stag scales.

This past weekend I went to my families home so I could get Caleb to help me mirror and copy the engraving I drew up and get it the right size. We then printed it and put it on the frame to see what it would look like. I'm liking it. :-)

That's all for today. I will post tonight and tomorrows progress on the guard tomorrow night. I'm off of here, back to the shop to do more shaping on the guard. :-)

Kyle, this WIP is awesome. Thank you for posting it. We all understand the additional work it takes to share the process, but please know it is much appreciated.

Looking good Kyle.
Love how the pommel came out.
Would never know this is your first time making a stainless handle frame.

Thanks for all the kind words. :-)

Here I've marked where I need to grind up to on the side of the guard.

In this pic I've started marking the clam shell area so I can grind and shape the guard.

Cut in with a file.

Here I've cleaned up the filed in scallops with a scotch brite wheel.

Now I'm ready to hand sand the rest of the guard and then buff it.

Thanks for looking.

That first clam sheel when it showed up polished was amazing! Seriously shiney! :D

awesome thread. Can't wait6 to see this one finished, looks so unique. Looks like its getting close!

Hey Kevin, after one or two months when you get bored of this knife don't worry I will take it off your hands. :)

This is an incredible piece of work, thank you for sharing the build steps. Buffing that shell must have taken ages. I'm jealous of your small radius for the plunge... I have to use the edge of the belt and it doesn't come out very clean.

This is an awesome piece of work. I never knew how much incredible effort went into making such a fine piece as this is going to be.

I would imagine that it is hard to give it up at the end of such a long and laborious process!

Thank you for taking the time to show how it is done, Kyle. This is very interesting, your excellent photos and text make it so. Good job and nice of you to share the process with us.

Yea...I don't know. Full time, 4-5 months seems terribly long for one knife, even with the engraving. I hope Kyle is ok.

Yep, Kyle's fine.
He's obviously not working on just this knife over the last 5 months. It's almost finished.
This is his first scroll engraving, and actually his first extensively engraved knife. He's spent quite a bit of time practicing along the way.
Think how careful he has to be. He's got all that work invested in the stainless handle frame and shell pommel that he's cutting into.

I've seen the completed/engraved spacer and it looks great.

More progress photos wil be coming soon.
