Work Sharp Knife Sharpener

Ok so where can I get this for 69 with free shipping...this seems like a no brainer! The reviews are generally good. But one question...can I do my Wetterings and Condor Machetes?

I was also wondering about this when I first got the machine. If you check their video the belt is going toward the edge when doing one side of the blade. I did find that if you follow the instructions it has never caught the edge for anyone else who tried it. I guess if you get distracted or do not pay attention to the video or the instructions you could catch the belt. Only one person had this problem out of about 15 or more that I had try this sharpener. He told me later that he was not sure that he had it against the guide.

I've pretty well talked myself into getting one of these in the next month, feel certain I'll be using mine guide-free and belt-going-away-from-the-edge at all times. I might be going to the dark side a bit using a machine, but damn it I'm still gonna free hand it if I can!! Lol. :D

I have a Norton stone (combo, coarse and fine), and a pocket steel, and some other sharpening stuff, which will be kept as a backup, in case my Worksharp fails on me (not expecting that) or the belts wear out (they will eventually, but I can make new ones) or I'm out in the field with no juice (electricity) and need to employ a field expedient (manual knife sharpener).

The Worksharp will take care of your sharpening needs, quick!

BTW... if you don't require a mirror polish on the edge, I've found that using the coarse grit belt, and then a sharpening steel (found in my kitchen!) will put an awesome edge on a user knife...

If you want the beautiful, mirror edge, go through the other belts and you'll have it.

Don't completely give up on using the guides. Give it a try on that knife you want to put that 20 degree edge on. You could be pleasantly surprised. From there you can always go to freehand if you feel you need to. I just did 10 knives yesterday for a customer. Went to the paper wheel for the Boker Titanium-carbide blade and finished up on the Spyderco.
I did find that thicker blades and some with blood grooves don't always fit in the guides. example USMC Kabar. It is a VG addition to what you already use or a stand alone unit for those who have never delved into sharpening. With the coarse and medium belts its a good way to re-profile your edge.

This looks like a pretty cool looking machine, and the price is super cheap. I just use my sears 1 x 42" belt grinder that I bought from a garage sale for $30. You can adjust the angle to any angle you want and bam, you have a perfect mirror polished edge and perfect angles. Pretty much the same concept. I probably would have gotten this worksharp if I hadn't already gotten my belt grinder.

I find it a pain to take my 1"x42" belt grinder with me when I visit family.:D They always ask me to sharpen one or more of their knives. My spyderco can take some time if their knife is not in good condition. This is a tool to fill that void. Like you mentioned not very pricy.

PRECISELY what I envision using this tool for. On my own stuff, I keep it sharp enough to where 3 minutes of work on the EF and EEF Dia-Sharp gets them back to don't stare too hard or it'll slice your cornea sharp. Notsamuch with my friends and family's pooness they call kitchen knives :barf: :D

I had ordered one of these on July 30th & just got around trying it today. I sharpened two folders, 3 hunting knives - 1 was partially serrated & 1 had a guthook & the other one was Pakistan. These were a customer's knives & they were in terrible shape. I also did a pair of lopping (Hedge) shears for the same customer. The Worksharp sharpener did an excellent job on all of them. I took the knives through all of the belts & the sheers through the green & red. I could shave my arm with the knives & although I didn't try the shears, I could see they had quite an edge on them. I am impressed with this machine.

This forum is good for helping me get rid of my money - I've just ordered a Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener for $69.95. It will take a couple of weeks to get here due to having it shipped to a USA address and then forwarded on to New Zealand, but I'm definitely looking forward to setting a convex edge on some of my knives.

Has anyone tried out the micromesh belts yet? Any recommendations on which ones are good to get?

Likewise a coarse or medium stone and then a light touchup on a fine diamond or ceramic rod. Quick and easy. That's how I do it.

One of the things I like about being free of the stones is I don't have to use oil for sharpening. The mess I'm able to avoid using the Work Sharp is another very real benefit. To each his own.

Do you know if it will take 240V?

I believe the three belts that come with the machine are the only ones available at this time. The finest being 6000 micro-mesh which does a nice job polishing the edge. GREAT SHARPENING DEVICE FOR THE PRICE. IMO

I don't think it does. I am presuming that you need a power converter.

Mentioned on page 7 of this thread - there are a lot of belts available:

Is there any interest in a small group buy of MicroMesh belts?
The reason I ask is that their minimum shipping is $12.50

Here's what I was thinking. Ten people in. Order the MX Series (for metal) in 1200, 800, 600, 400, 320, 240, and 120 grit. Two belts of each grit. For 10 people, that would be $72.80 in belts + $12.50 shipping + $6.37 CA tax if I ordered it here. Total $91.67. That is $9.20 per person plus postage back out plus an envelope. Say $10 per person and I can throw a couple of dimes in if it can go for 44 cents. If someone out of CA wanted to organize it it would be cheaper.

Any interest? That would be $10 for 14 belts (2 each of 7 grits) shipped.

I'm keen on 2x that - I have an address in CA, but then I have to pay for stuff to be forwarded on to New Zealand. I'd prefer to buy twice as many belts and pay for shipping half as often.

How would the AO belts go on knives? AO should be capable of grinding metal and Micro-Mesh offer much finer grades. Also I'm not sure that we really need all the close together grits. How about MX 120 & MX 240 - I vote we keep those in. Then maybe MX 400 & MX 600 & MX 1200 wouldn't that cover the range pretty well? Then add the AO 2400 & AO 4000.

I'm happy to go with the majority decision and $10 is fine for 14 belts. I'd also be happy with $12 and make it 16 belts - add a couple of AO 12,000 for mirror polishing. 2 lots - $20 to $24 sent to my CA address - count me in as a definite yes.
