World War I Navy Issue Knife

Glad to see your two Lone Stars. [emoji6]
I didn't want to carry the same type of knife two weeks in a row, so your SFO Rope is next week.

I must say, loving that you did a different cover on the Lone Star. Who did that for you? Also, how did you patina your set of SFOs?

HST, the Lone Star with white bone is a "1 of 3" anomaly.
There were three damascus blades left over, and GEC handled them in white bone. I was lucky to score one. We didn't put smooth handles on any of my SFO knives because of difficulty in finishing them with the special bolsters. In the post above, all have factory finishes - no patina as yet. The matte finish on the AAPK is especially dark, but is, again, as made!

I am still pondering a lanyard. I want to make one before I carry one of these knives.

First, nice score.

Second, I was talking about what you did to your SFO Rope Knives. Actually, it seems you only put patina on two of the three you had made.

I have a very cool lanyard that I came up with on my own for these knives. I call it the anchor lanyard. I'm trying to get home to show a step by step tutorial (Atlanta Traffic). I think everyone will like it and find it pragmatic.

Are you talking about the two damascus steel blades? Those just have a different steel that is actually a layering of multiple steels.

At last I get to CF and CE them!

Your SFO Rope Knives' patina ^^^ was what I was wondering about and what you did to get the results.

A scanner at work is the answer. The knives look like that have a patina depending on the angle of the knife on the glass, that is just how they show up.

I have several of Lone Star Rope Knives and several SFO CC Rope knives. I realize that the Lone Star's are Damascus. I posted the first Lone Star in this thread.

I will get a really cool bail up in a little while and I made some to put on quickly that are more fancy. I think you guys will like these on the Rope Knives bail. Specifically, how they work and they way they protect the knife.

Right now, I gotta sip some coffee and get ready for the market to open. I'll be back soon.

No way. Really? The top knife pictured looks especially like a forced patina. Could you please explain "scanner," in this instance?

Sorry - I was really doubtful that's what you meant, but I though you were referring to that photo with the lone stars.

It sounds like he used a flatbed scanner to image the knives, so some took the light of the scanner head on, and some took it at an angle such that the finish looks dimmer.

I too wonder why you would use a scanner over a camera.

It appears he's using a flatbed scanner, laying the knives on the glass to image them. You can see a uniform stripe running up the left side which may indicate debris or smudging on the glass or scanner element.

Charlie, you get some pretty decent results that way. From some of the "pics" I've seen on the bay, you could probably make a living teaching sellers how to do this. :D

You know I have tried that myself, but the scanners I have used do not have a very good depth of field. Charlies scanner does which shows the detail in dimesions of the knives. I have not been able to find one that does the same. Usually the image falls off toward the backdrop. I would love to find a good one, because scanning knives makes the images so clear.

Post the pics while sipping your coffee! I don't think you want to watch the market today :)

HST, I do use a flat-bed scanner, an old, obsolete AGFA. I have never seen a better depth of field, and shudder to think of this scanner giving up the ghost! It is getting a little clunky at 16-17 years old!
The bright blade in the middle of the image in question just happened to get the lights full-on and glared. The finishes are actually all the same, and mint/unblemished.

I hope I'm not out of line returning to lanyards;
I just found the lanyard that came with my Camillus Coast Guard knife. Five feet long even with the eye-splices. 3/16" cotton twine.
It came with a loop in one end secured by a piece of squeezed metal. Maybe the cadets were expected to do a Turk's head slide lanyard like the old days.
I pried off the metal and did two eye-splices (worth at least a D- in a marline-spike seamanship, I hope).
If I ever really used it, the big loop would go over a shoulder and under an arm.

Not out of line at all! In fact you are stringing us right along!
I am going to have to learn the eye-splice!

Finally got a chance to post the one I got, as others have stated the jigging is fantastic, best yet by GEC. Good job bringing these to fruition Charlie:thumb up:

How are everyone's lanyards coming along? I was lucky enough to score a Tidioute ebony and am looking for ideas.

Anyone making the old, long navy style like in the vintage pics? Those are especially cool.

Oh Man - I am SO SO Rapt. My box from Barry arrived this morning!!!!

I'm at work so can't take any snaps but I have three stunning Rope knives with the most awesome jigging.
Beautifully finished- typical lightweight frame of the 15, making this a fantastic Slim carry - most of my other knives in the Rope knife variety are big , huge solid knives- these are wonderfully finished knives.

I will be able to store these three ( one of each of Scale Colour ) as Queens for a future generation as I am SO SO LUCKY to have another coming that I can use:eek::)- by the generosity of a great guy out there- that story will follow.

Charlie - Bill@ GEC - to you both a massive thank you for yet again a great SFO of Charlie's😄
