World War I Navy Issue Knife

Kiteman - re the Lanyards - is there not a section hat covers this in the BF? Sure I saw something one day ?

Sorry guys, my boy-man son decided last Friday he was going to speed home from college "excessively," as the State Patrol put it; and I've been in damage control since lunch on Friday. I went to go get some poster board to contrast my knots and such and then pretty much my day and week went BOOM.

I will get my Rope Knife's lanyard tie up, but here is a quick shot of the functional one rather than my aesthetic ones. It can be cinched tight on ones wrist, protects the blade and knife from scratches and accidentally closing on the bail, and hangs out well from the pocket.

Loving the jigging after a week in and was a little undecided at first. The F&F is a 10 on all 3 of mine and they were actually sharp for a GEC.

I did some searching around and couldn't find the lanyard thread! I saw it at one time too but now I can't seem to locate it.

HST, really like your lanyard on that rope knife! I dig the red, white and blue!

HST, my sympathies.

Now, lanyards:

By the bolded part, do you mean the knot prevents the bail from being able to (easily) move forwards where the blade could close it?

Or, is it just that, with the knife tethered (under some tension or at least to a stop point), the bail won't move forward?

How does the "cinching tight" happen?

I'm intrigued. :)

I am going to attempt to do my best to explain this tie. It cinches by the end of the bail. Yes, the knots prevent the bail from dinging the knife and the blade in case of accidental closure. Also the knots do keep the bail extended better, but I wouldn't say "Keep in place."

I am doing a series of pics and how I did what. This pic is just the tools and stuff I'll be using. The second is a close up of my lanyards that I'd use for highlighting a rope knife while out socially. Then it will be a series of pics - which will take me a few to do right - of the pragmatic lanyard for a rope knife I call 'The Rope Knife Anchor Knot.'

Here's the function of the lanyard.

I really hope this showed it well. I will also start to show my knots. Notice the lanyard helps make the knife have more handle.

Just common sense would dictate to one that tying a lanyard to your neck is dangerous and an antiquated method. This wristlet lanyard makes it very easy to get out of the pocket, put on your wrist, deploy one handed, tuck the knife away, take off, and protect the knife from its bail. I thought of fishing, kayak fishing, cutting rope, or what ever may come to one's needs while using this tool. When the knife is tucked up, you have almost total free movement. I pretended to tie a knot with it tucked away under my wrist while cinched. I also kept in mind sanitary and water related reasons for removing the bails with all my designs. I feel old doing this, because I have zero photography and video skills. Had my GF not came home I was probably going to cut myself or chip a tooth trying to hold my phone. I will get to the knots and how I use the other lanyards next.

As stated in my Thank you Thread to Paul, heres a few group shots of Charlies latest -always a bit late when traveling all the way here to New Zealand, but here they are........well worth the wait - anyday!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Duncan, great selection! Love your pics too :)

Nicely arranged pictures, Duncan!
Glad you like the knives - Bill did a good job!:)

Thank you for the comments guys- Charlue I very much like the knife- I agree With you about Bill, he seems to have a unnatural talent.

After a lengthy voyage across the pond, this lovely knife sailed onto my kitchen table yesterday, courtesy of Captain Charlie :) I love Rope Knives, and have been fascinated to see how this design would turn out since Charlie first told me about it. It's beautifully-made, and I think congratulations are in order, both to Charlie and to GEC, not just for the design and the quality of the work, but for being prepared to run with a relatively unusual pattern. Like the rest of the knife, the bail is a work of art, and I like its dimensions as well as its stiffness. The blade etch is classy, and the the lines of the blade are quite exquisite. GEC's jigging gets better and better I think. I was a little surprised at just how lightweight the knife is, and it certainly wouldn't feel heavy carried in a chest pocket as per US Navy regulations. Like everyone else, I will of course be having a play around with how I carry it. I have some British Naval lanyards on order, so one of those might be suitable, but we'll see. Thanks again Charlie :)

I don't have one of these rope knives and your first photo is the best look I've had at the bail. I like the "rope" theme a lot, which carries through on the bolsters, but I thought the bail was round in cross section with the pattern going completely around the circumference. A minor point, of course, but that would have been more pleasing to me (but who cares what I think anyway? ;-))

Congratulations on the new toy! Beautiful bone coloring and jigging too.

Thank you Major, I have a lot of knives with bails, and I think this the nicest, not just because of the rope-work, but because of the dimensions and its stiffness. It can also be folded back over the back of the blade
