World War I Navy Issue Knife

I bought this old Acme City whistle recently, thinking I could use the lanyard, which is the same design as the Royal Navy lanyard, but the only way I'll get the whistle off the lanyard is to cut it off! :grumpy:  :D

Silly question Jack: Can't you just pull the rope through the loop to get it off, rather than trying to pull the loop over the whistle?

Jack, does the eyelet unscrew off the end of the whistle??

I'm afraid not Charlie :(

I got a awesome surprise today, as per usual running around flat stick - but drew to a halt when I went past my Cubby Hole that had a envelope inside.....

I know what you are thinking - and most of you are right!!...Our Jack has sent me a awesome Lanyard to go with my Awesome 15 Rope Knife from the one and only Waynorth cutlery!!!

I sent Jack a true-felt Thank you - but a question as well...Just HOW did Jack finish those knotss off so so magnificently? - have a good close look - you cannot find a beginning OR an end - they are just perfect

Jack - this looks to me from all your wonderful photo's - a replica of the HMS Navy lanyards the Cadets/ Sailors wore under their collars?

I LOVE IT, and Thank you for the lovely Card as well Sir Jack.

Your one in a million Jack! Thank you so so much......

:)

I'm glad the lanyard arrived OK Duncan, and thanks for the kind words my friend, but I'm afraid I can take no credit whatsover for the tying of the knots. What you have is not my interpretation of a Royal Navy knife lanyard, but a genuine Royal Navy knife lanyard, purchased with the knots pre-tied :o I thought you'd enjoy having a play around with it

Good guess. Or does the Turk's head slide? It sure looks like that whistle went on by being fed through the loop.

In this case, I'm afraid not :( I figured the same, and that I'd just be able to remove the whistle, but that's not the case :(

That is Jack Black. [emoji106][emoji41][emoji106]

Thank you my friend :)

Nope, thoroughly tied on :( Never mind

Well, as we all know, generosity flows on the porch. Today, I was granted a very generous gesture from an established member. Thank you so much, sir. It really means a lot to me. Thank you! [emoji41][emoji111]

Yeah, leave that whistle on, it's sweet looking, for old Maritime themes.

Thanks HST. Apparently while rank and file seamen carried clasp-knives on their knife lanyards, officers carried whistles on theirs. I guess they just whistled when they wanted something cutting! :D

That was officer's do and why I liked it so much. The GF says I'm way to "Barky" still. Whatever, as long as it gets done...

I'll address your comment to my plate here, because we're going to go shop. That's about as close as I get to carbohydrates, and Fogo De Chao's salad bar is my all time favorite. So yummy! [emoji41]

They are not razors, MC. You would struggle to shave with that blade. The file/manicure blade kept your nails maintained, and the main blade was designed to cut rope well. The swedge reduces bulk, and eases slicing through deep material.

Plus the Navy is all about close quarters. The Navy knows sailors need to cut thing but they frown on pointed knives. All those young me cooped up getting on each others' nerves give command some pause with regard to pointy objects. Never mind a the damage a big pipe wrench would do! You see a lot of sailors knives that lack a point and that is often cited as one reason.

Thanks for highlighting Charlie's post HoosierQ, I think I might have missed that before

On the other matter, didn't the US Navy issue TL-29s to submarine crews?

As MUCH discussion has been around the reasons for not having a Clip Point on Board a Ship/Sea Vessel - the "danger of accidentally stabbing/ use fighting with a sharp point - or cutting a Sail are always bought up - there is no proof to this, and there would be no more danger of accidentally poking/stabbing anyone - than in any other case of people using knives- Sailors dont run around close quarters with their knives sticking out.

The Clip point has a sharp point that is a lot easier broken with the smallest amount of misuse when using that knife as a Tool, Dropping the knife also quite often results in tip Damage, The Sheepsfoot is a Stronger Thicker Blade, all one basic but very good Blade, therefore making a more reliable and economical knife to have for supply to many hands?

Jack Sir- PLEASE forgive me for the delay in getting back to you- When I messaged you to Thank you for this wonderful Lanyard - I was on my way out to a Work Trip and have just this minute arrived home.

WOW..... So this is a Genuine Original Lanyard!!!
I am so grateful for the fantastic and Generous Thinking in sending me this fantastic piece, I knew immediately that it was a work of extremely High Standard!!

That is simply awesome - Jack again....MANY Thanks my friend

STOP! Do not cut that lanyard! I may be missing something, Jack, but as far as I can tell from the picture the lanyard is attached with a simple Lark's Head, aka Ring Hitch. There are two ways to remove it. The first is to pull the end loop through the ring as far as it will go (up to the Turk's Head) then push the whistle through the loop. From your comments it sounds as if the whistle is too long for that to work, and it certainly looks that way from the picture.

The second way is to pull the end loop through the ring as before, then put the Turk's Head through the loop and pull the whole lanyard through. To clarify, with the whistle in the position shown, grab the doubled end loop on the right side of the ring and pull until the Turk's Head is drawn up against the ring. Then grab the end of the loop on the left side of the ring and pull until the whole loop is on the left side. Put the Turk's Head down through the loop and pull the whole lanyard through. The whistle should come right off.

Thanks very much for the advice my friend, it's very much appreciated  I'm just checking in here before rushing out the door, but I'll give that a try later. I certainly won't be cutting the lanyard though :)

Thanks very much my friend, I've obviously spent too much time away from the rock face! :D I think it looks pretty spiffy, though I'm not sure I'll wear it with the neck lanyard very often, and I haven't had a 30" waist for 15 years! :D Thanks again

I was poking around at the rear of Kelham Island Industrial Museum in Sheffield yesterday, and came across this old sign. Couldn't resist getting a few pics of my Rope Knife

Very Cool Old sign Jack - how could you not take that photo!!!

Thanks my friend :) THe two large 'Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted' signs (probably to deter people taking 'scrap') didn't put me off at all! :D

lol, you rebel - breaking the law!

Well, apart from the fact I know that there's no such law here, I'd been talking to the museum manager ten minutes before, and figured the worst that would happen is that someone would say, "You shouldn't really be in this area." ;) :D Thanks
