World War I Navy Issue Knife

Not official Navy..... but I recently made this Rope Knife for Leo Goolden. Leo has been restoring the hundred year old sailing ship TALLY HO. He sent me a piece of one of the ribs he's replacing for me to use for the handle. It's English Oak - and was black from a century of being soaked with diesel oil and seawater. I made the knife as a gift to Leo to support the ongoing restoration and as a way of saying thanks for his inspiring work.

He's got a great series of videos (over fifty to date) documenting the restoration. Check them out Sampson Boat Co

Knife is O1 carbon steel; nickel silver liners, pins and bolsters; coin silver escutcheon

Wow! Absolutely stunning knife, and perfect for that restoration. Lots of history soaked right into those covers, and couldn't be any more fitting for that knife. Well done:thumbsup:

Cool knife! Is it a slipjoint or friction?

The Rope Knife is a slip joint. No nail nick, as there's plenty of blade to grab hold of. And it's also a strong spring. Leo plans on using it, so it's a working knife. He wanted carbon steel and understands the care it will need being used at sea - just like his traditionally built wooden boat.

and gracias for all the nice comments.

Apparently, we can add Thomas Turner to the list of makers for the two blade Navy issue type knife with which Charlie C. started this thread.

I saw that one also, I enlarged the picture and pretty sure it's another Thomaston with part of the stamp worn away, that makes 3 known Thomaston's.

Sorry. I did not enlarge the photos and an English maker would be a bit unusual, but not unheard of.

He has relisted the knife.

Thomas Turner ENCORE This very nice old Stag Rope Knife ( pictured at the bottom ) snaps like a 'Gator- Whew! Lovely old Knife!
