Would anyone else be upset with jimping like this?(resolved)

For that price, anything less than perfection is unacceptable. Yes, I have experienced times in life where customers are just being unreasonable in their quest for perfection, but this is NOT one of those times. That looks like a mess, and I would absolutely send it back until if is fixed. If the knife maker feels you are being unreasonable, then let him give you a refund and sell the knife to someone else.

If the communication with the maker was a major issue, I would probably bother asking redo or modification because I would be sure that I will get more frustration.

If I cannot part with the knife, I would probably send it to Josh @razor-edge-knives for mods.
I have seen his work , it's very clean. I am going to give them the opportunity to make this right hopefully without any resistance from DDR. Thanks for the advice

In this case I completely disagree. He's in for over $4k. For that kind of money it needs to be done right in the first place. The OP shouldn't have to pay more money to have someone else to fix it.

op,
You absolutely want the knife, but you want it done right. Correct?
At the same time you don't want to come across as an nitpicky prick, and piss off the maker. Thus assuring he continues to not put the care you want into it's creation. You don't want him to just issue a refund and take it back either, or god forbid tell you the job is done, and piss off.

What you need to remember is that he is not doing you a favor by building this knife for you. This is a business transaction. He is providing a product for a fee. YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER. Not his pal. You don't need for him (or them) to like you.

My advice would be to call (not email or PMs) and speak to a live body. Be firm, but always courteous. Let him know that you really want the product, but you want what was agreed to when you commissioned the build. That includes the jimping, blade style, grind, etc. Show stock photos compared to yours. Offer to copy & resend the original email with all those requirements. If you feel that this isn't working then let him know that you posted the question here on BF and what the replies were. Send the link if you must.

Do not relent. If you do, I doubt you'll ever truly enjoy the knife knowing what a terrible experience it was having it built. I know I would resent the thing, and likely sell it at the first opportunity I got.

Best of luck and keep us posted. This could be very educational for others.

This jimping is done in Japanese style...it called "Falling rain" ........

Sorry op, this is horrible. I see allot more on that knife that I wouldn't be happy with either for that kinda money.
This is the reason I gave up on buying custom knives. I wish you the best of luck.

Please direct the seller to this thread. We want to hear his side of the story and he should be made aware that there is an audience expressing a legitimate concern.

This isn't even close to first instance of someone being unhappy with a DDR. I'm amazed people continue to buy his knives.

Well spoken.

Ya I have been in their Facebook group for almost a year and I just posted a video of the action about 2 hours ago and pictures of the blades detent path and jimping and now I am blocked lol...

Just for my morbid curiosity, would you mind sharing that video with us too?
Honestly I would love to add it bit I don' know how to share with imgur, that' how I upload picture to the forum and the files aren' compatible. Sometimes I wish I was more tech savvy. But the pictures I put with video are in the thread but just incase here. If you look closely at how serious the the blade is being worn down after less than 3 hours of flipping you can imagine just how gritty the action was.

I've seen so many custom stories like this, i don't think i could ever have the confidence to shell out that kind of cash for one (unless it was a Demko). Not after pulling apart all my CRK's and seeing the finish on even the inside of those, all for under 500. Seriously if i were you OP, i'd do what many have suggested, call up and be courteous but get the knife you PAID for - or a full refund. Personally i'd go for the refund because I would just be so put off by this to ever get a connection to the knife. Not to mention it's not the blade shape you asked for????? that's insane. Best of luck to you with it all.

Thanks for yours and everyone' s support. I will be attempting to make contact with Ian or Eric at DDR tomorrow and see if we can get this worked out. Like I said earlier in the post I really love this model knife and high heat mokuti colors so this has my heart and wallet in it. If all else fails I will approach the refund avenue... fingers crossed.

Alternatively you could try compromising, a considerable discount and have somebody make it right, like Josh@REK. Since it really looks like it can be remedied, it just needs somebody who gives a damn.
