Would it be dishonest?

I've owned my Benchmade Griptilian for nearly a year. I've held on to it for so long because I really wanted to like the knife. The knife just feels cheap to me. It took me a while to acquire some other blades and realize that for the price I paid (about $100 at REI) its just not worth it. I've EDC'ed the Griptilian off and on for a while and used it only a little bit (basic cutting chores). What i'm wondering is: is it ok to return the knife, or would it be dishonest? I not one of those folks who buy something just to use it for a while then return it, in fact I've wasted a lot of money on bad quality products just to "be honest". The worst wear on the knife is the clip wear (who's painted clip on their Benchmade isn't worn?). The return policy ends in four days, so would I look like a crook? I just feel like I got gypped. So tell me what you think. Thanks!

I guess if they'll let you return it after having it for a year without you hiding anything then no its not dishonest. Dishonesty usually entails intentional deception.

After you disclosed you opinion and thoughts its clear youneed to take personal responsibility and NOT return the knife.

Perhaps certain situations would be ok to return after that length of time if complete HONESTY is provided to rei and they accept it.

This is not one of those situations.

I'll also add I received the knife with two small scratches on the blade (no big deal), and up and down blade play (big deal for me). These are big reasons I want to return the knife.

$100 for that knife seems pretty normal.

What are the better knives that are leading you feel that's not a fair price (and how much did they cost)?

If you're honest about your reasons and their policy covers the return go for it. If you feel guilty, get store credit and buy something else from them.

Sounds a bit like you're trying to convince yourself it's cool.
Big deal.......and you kept it for a year??

It's not dishonest but with any wear at all and given the time span, it would be pretty amazing if they refund you. As a business owner I wouldn't, I would figure you would likely have known within the first few days the knife wasn't right for you and if there was any doubt you wouldn't have carried it. But if it is a big box retailer and they will do it, maybe its worth a try.

Spyderco Lum Chinese (one of my EDC favorites), is one of them. If you get a normal price they are about $120 dollars on ebay (new). Before they were discontinued, they were about the same price new.

The year is for defcts in manufacture to show up, not for a tirekicker to finally decide he deserves a more elegant knife. Did you think you were renting it? I don't believe returning it is right at all.

Isn't it normal to carry the knife and use it to find if the knife is good for you? Anyways thanks for the advice!

- Where do you draw the line on trying things out? Do you wear clothes for a year to see if you like it? What about a kitchen knife?

If you're not happy with the blade play, send it in to Benchmade to have them fix it. Then use it or sell it. IMO, it's extremely dishonest to carry a knife and use it and then return it because you aren't happy with it, yet have made no efforts to fix the issues.

If you had the knife for almost a year before deciding you didn't like it I think that's on you. I would just sell it and move on. I'm also very doubtful REI will refund you, if so they have the most lenient return policy I have seen (other than Cosco).

I have to agree with Esav. What is the store going to do with the knife when you return it? Would you want to buy a knife as new that someone had owned for a year and actually carried and used some? So if they don't sell it then do they just eat the expense because you changed your mind after a year? Would that seem fair to you if you were a small business owner and the roles were reversed? Sometimes I find that when faced with these dilemmas the answers suddenly become clear when I put myself in the other persons shoes. :)

If I were you I would just sell the knife on the exchange. You might have to take $20 less but you won't have to wonder if you did the right thing.

You used the knife over and over. It is yours. Returning it now under the guise of a warranty concern is absolutely dishonest. You don't want it anymore/you want something else and you are concocting a justification scheme to do something you know is mousy. Don't do it. Behaviors like that force well intentioned companies to limit/curtail useful return policies and that affects the rest of us.

Only if you misrepresent to the manufacturer why you are returning the knife.

I think if it was me that I would try and sell it for a used Grip. and ask $65 to $75 for it and you would feel better and everybody more or less on here would probably go along with that.!** You ask ~~ and that is my honest opinion!*

I look at it differently.

If this is a case where a retailer has given you a one year period of refund, no questions asked, in order to lure you to buy the knife in the first place, hell yes do it. If you aren't satisfied with the knife after a year, return it to them just like they asked you to do.

If not, most places won't deal with that if it's not in re-sellable condition so they can pawn it off on the next guy.

If it's the former, don't even feel bad about it. They'll make money on your knife one way or the other.
