Would it be dishonest?

If you're honest about your reasons and their policy covers the return go for it. If you feel guilty, get store credit and buy something else from them.

It's rei. They'll accept it. I don't think they'll even ask why you're returning it. If they do, just be honest. They mainly ask so they know it's not defective. They'll sell it at they're yearly member sale at discount. You may be doing a poor hiker a favor. ;)

I don't blame those telling me I am a crook looking to get a free knife for a year. But I explain I feel I was cheated, EChoil and others have did their homework and realized the point that I am trying to get across. At this point I will probably be returning the knife.

Isn't it normal to carry the knife and use it to find if the knife is good for you? Anyways thanks for the advice!

I think it is like a pair of runners, wear them around the house for a couple of hours and if they aren't gonna work take them back. If you run on them for a year and decide they aren't right for you, sell them at a garage sale and get a new pair.

From the REI website:

100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

We stand behind everything we sell. If you are not satisfied with your REI purchase, you can return it for a replacement or refund. Items must be returned within a year of purchase.

REI’s guarantee doesn’t cover ordinary wear and tear or damage caused by improper use or accidents.

If your item has a manufacturing defect in its materials or workmanship, you can return it at any time. See our limited warranty.

You can return or exchange purchases from REI or REI Outlet by mail or at any of our retail locations, regardless of whether you made your purchase online, by phone or in an REI store.

Crooked move IMO. Only thing worse is that you went looking here for people to make you feel morally OK about it. :thumbdn: :barf:

Did we forget the blade play? I respect you sir, but I feel this comment was a little biased.

Opinions by nature are biased. When you ask what a person "thinks about" a certain topic, that is what you get. Your description of motives just got stranger as the thread went on, you kept providing details as it went along, which didn't exactly add to the sincerity.

The year isn't a trial period. It's like a warranty on a car. If I decide I don't like my car after one year I can't return it, even if it has a 250,000 mile warranty.

The blade play wasn't that big of a deal for you or you would've returned it ages ago.

How bout you try selling it on here. Get $70 out of it. Then again don't be upset if whoever buys it and returns it a year later... Oh wait you would be pretty pissed if they did that....

Hey Rev...what would happen if someone pulled a similar stunt on the Exchange here?

But, I would say if you kind of liked the knife, and/or function, check out the HK Axis. Similar sized frame, but with G10 scales. I really don't like the plastic-y look and feel of the Grips either. But the HK took care of that. Made by Benchmade, and have both regular size and mini also. Available in black and now sand g10.

Not to target you in any way, Bflying, but this recommendation seems akin to inviting a leech to live in your pool. Nah, I would recommend he stay away from Benchmade -and REI for that matter. He should pursue Ganzo and Enzo and Sanrenmu knives on auction sites. Manufacturers without customer support and retailers with whom I do not do business.

An upshot to threads like this is that they spotlight who to steer clear of in sales.

Yeah, what WOULD happen if BF offered a knife with a one-year satisfaction guarantee and someone returned the knife within a year because they decided they weren't satisfied with it?

You mentioned that another reason you took so long to decide to return it was that the REI was far away from you. If it's so far away, then just sell it as suggested and take a small loss. This way you won't waste the gas, (especially if they in fact don't accept it and refund you the money) and you won't feel guilty about your motives either. :)

It is not the brand, but more so the retailers fault. I love my leatherman, I love my Masters Of Defense knives, I love my spyderco, I love my SAK's. I have bought all listed and have had no problems with them. That is because they are quality pieces, and have come from good sellers. I don't really blame REI too much even though I feel cheated, you can't check every nook and cranny of a knife like a collector can... the employees got stuff to do. I just wan't my money back, plain and simple. Things like this WILL happen when you decide to run your company in this manner. I am decided about this. And I regret posting this question.

Maybe post the outcome either way, I am interested to see if they actually will take it back.

Dude it's not REI fault. You're passing the blame. You should've returned it immediately. You can find loopholes all you want. It's wrong and unethical. You would be so pissed if someone did this to you. Now people are not going to sell you stuff on here.

You're on Blade Forums..a place to sell blades. Sell it with good intent, describe it honestly, and cut your losses. I've blown too much money on knives that don't necessarily "speak" to me. It's just part of the cycle man and I feel that returning it - coupled with the fact that you are feeling guilty about doing so- isn't the best way to handle it.

I personally would not return it a year later, if the marks bothered my I would have returned it immediately. I think a bad case of buyers remorse is at play here. My suggestion is to stay away from the more "expensive" knives , you will pick them apart and regret them.
