Would you really survive?

I can't live without bacon so screw it. Doesn't matter how fat I am, if there's no bacon I'm throwing myself off the mountain no need for zombies or whatever to do it for me

That's borderline dangerous if it's true! How did you figure out that percentage?? Did you use a caliper?
Had the caliper and the electric thing which uses the electrical impedence (or whatever the term is).
The highest bodyfat I ever got to was 11%, but that took more eating than I have money for.:(

If your goal is just to live long and be healthy, the comments about body building being bad for you are mostly true. It's not as bad as being obese, but in some ways it's similar to be being just plain fat. Your biceps get bigger. Your liver and other essential organs do not. A fat out of shape dude of 250lbs burns about the same amount of calories as a muscular 210lb guy. Just look at these retired wrestlers and athletes who never make it past their 60's. It's a lot of work for your body. Consuming, digesting, and processing all those calories. Tearing down and building up muscle. The guys who make it to being over 70, 80, and even 90 years old tend to be really skinny guys who never weighed more than 150lbs, 140lbs, and 130lbs, for there entire lives. At 80, there only consuming and using around 1000 calories a day. Small meals. A cup of coffee and a piece of fruit for breakfast. A cup of soup for lunch. Ect. A lot of walking and socializing nearby. But only a few miles total throughout the day. They're not jogging marathons.

But....You could make a case using the indoor vs outdoor cat analogy. The indoor cat does live longer on average. But the outdoor may have lived a more exciting life. Given the choice, most cats prefer to go outside. Even if it's only hanging around the backyard. Some people just prefer to live more active lives and have stronger bodies even knowing that it may shorten their lifespan. And by active I'm lumping together endurance buffs who ride a bike 20+miles a day, the long distance joggers, along with the body builders. It's not good to red line a sports car and burn rubber, but it feels good. And it good to use your body. Scrambling down a mountainside trail, doing pullups on a tree branch, sprinting downhill on a bike, cartwheels and hand walking, it all feels good. And people treat you better when you're in shape. Woman like muscles on their men. Men respect men who are muscular and athletic. So you gotta weigh longevity with quality when making your fitness plan. And don't forget, food taste awesome and athletic people can eat more. And really once sex goes to crap in your life, it's really the best pleasure you have left. Especially chocolate. But also pepper jack cheese chicken quesodillas, pastrami with provolone, terramisu, flan, fried ice cream, fish and chips, chili, BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also being a really skinny and frail twerp can have some real disadvantages in life.
Nice post. If we're going to get all serious I'll throw in my two cents. I used to run 3-4 times a week, lift weights, and rock climb. One day I hurt my back and all that went away. About the most strenuous thing I can do now is hike and I admit I don't get out as much as I want. I go to the doctor every year for a checkup and every year she looks at my chart and says I'm boring. There's nothing wrong with my health. So I'm chubby but then again I love my life. I'm happy and healthy and that's really the way to live isn't it?

Hey brother, you really, really need to read my post that you quoted all the way to the end. But thanks for the earnest comments anyway :D

Of all the knives to use to compare, you used an 11? Why not a 9, 1, or go for broke and say machax? ;)

I'm all about sowing cognitive dissonance!

I am SO glad to see someone actually use that in a sentence. Well done to you.

Clich, have you tried candied bacon yet? Or chocolate dipped candied bacon? :D

It's honestly a miracle that I am as fit as I am, considering how much I love to cook, and the fact that I was a dessert chef for a while... Definitely takes a lot of sweat.

Funny how much this thread improved once the OP stopped posting... I'm still kinda hoping to hear some of what he's done to lose some weight. I'd definitely be down for some swapping of tips and exercises and such.

I gotta chime in here.

Ok someone said fat people will survive better than someone with 2 pct body fat.......... ANYONE will survive better than someone with 2 pct body fat.

The lowest I ever got at my slimmest was 5 pct body fat and my doctor was screaming at me that he was going to commit me for an eating disorder if I didn't get my pct up because its not healthy.

Having said that, there is a HUGE difference between being fat, being a healthy weight and body fat pct, and having 2 pct body fat.
You don't have to be captain America to survive in the wilderness and probably don't want to be the blob either.

I am 5'9" and about 180 lbs, at least 15 pounds of that really could be gone, about 10 of it needs to be.
I have been as heavy as 212, and as skinny as 135, at 135 I was benching 285 for reps (on a machine not free weights)
The best shape I have ever been in I was 188 and about 10 pct body fat, Now I am close to that weight but I know the fat is winning ..lol.

People need to be less touchy about this thread from what I see, I have no problem admitting that I could be in better shape, because I know there are a lot of people in WAY worse shape, some of whom cant do anything about it because they are hurt or have a health problem.

Feel blessed if you are healthy, if your upset by someone saying your fat, then ask why it upsets you. Is it because your fat and you dont like it ? Is it because your not fat and they person is just being an ass?
Because Either way its easy to resolve.

If you have a health issue that keeps you from being able to be at a weight that your happy with, then screw the people hassling you, they dont know what you live with.
If your fat and mad that your fat, then work on it. Not because someones saying something, but because your not happy.
If your not fat, then just laugh at the person.
If your fat and happy... Good for you ! Most people in this world aren't lucky enough to be happy, or smart enough to get out of their own way and allow themselves to be happy.

Anyway Just my 2 cents on this topic.

I just lost 50lbs doing this and it is amazing how much better i feel when out on the trail. not to mention all the added health benifits that go along with it. Okay lets hear all the excuses................

wow 50lbs !! good for you, however I'm not that fat :D

although at 41 I've been slouching bigtime, apparently the bmi index says I'm 25-30lbs overweight and I feel it.. my wife's a nurse and is on me all the time about people she sees my age, weight etc in for heart attacks yada yada.....

this thread is just enough to send me over the edge and makes me fighting mad :D but the only one I have to beat up about it is me :)

now as far as survival, you're right being fit will help you but I know guys really fit and I can work circles around them, sometimes fat can help....... someone with 2% body fat will die before yourself at 14% that's for sure.. in a survival situation with no food, my moneys on fatboy :D

I'm over weight about 6'6" and 280 pounds. But it's hard to get to the gym when you're going to school full time, and when you're not in class you're either working or doing HW, so maybe once i graduate and get a schedule i'll loose some weight but for now, all i've been doing is trying to eat better.

Let me see if I can get this wreck back on track.

Yes, I would really survive. Not necessarily based on my body weight, but my knowledge, skills, and gear that I depend on. I'm a long time believer, after years of excercise, eating right, and being active, the body will grow to the mold.

Which means, my body adapts to its lifestyle, its a difficult time, when you're bodies adjusting, but survival is based on a myriad of variables, some you can control, others not so much.

Could I win a 5K race tomorrow? No, I would die. Pure and simple. Could I get my fat, saggy, smoking carcass across the 5K mark, yes, yes I could. The difference is time. I'm not built to be a runner, never have been, even when I was. I'm built to be a tank. Slow, heavy, and knocking down everything in its path.:D

I do believe that in a "survival" situation, a slower metabolism is a greater asset, than a higher one. I won't need to eat as much, and I carry around fat reserves that will keep me working without food, longer than a bean pole with a hypermetabolism. I've seen it in action. I've seen very large, muscular guys, very fit, and in great shape, lose damn near all mental faculties, after just a single day without food. He was used to eating 5-6 times a day, small light meals, etc. When he needed food, and didn't have it, he lost his edge, a clear head.

Me, I can go a few days without eating, no problem. I do it at least twice a month, to make sure I got the mental side of it down, quell the big hunger pains, drink water, and stay focused on being active.

Food is not even in the 3 most important things in a tough spot, or "survival situation", its really not in the top 5 if you wanna get real technical about. Fitness on the other hand is good to have, but endurance is almost paramount. Just because I can't work as fast as you, doesn't mean I won't get my work done. Its about conserving calories, and energy, not about bushcrafting a nice living room.
