Would you use your own classy gents folder at a fancy restaurant?

Specifically for the intention to look a bit unique & posh, at least in your own mind.

This is actually a thing, slicey folders with fancy schmancy scales, no pocket clip...etc. use them to eat your meal with just because you can.

Sounds like a neat idea.

New trend is everything has to be "slicey" apparently. To the topic, if they didn't supply the right knife for the job, sure, I might use my own and have as a small fixed EDC (I don't own any folders currently) but wouldn't do it just to "...look a bit unique & posh" personally.

I usually carry a Case Trapper when I am dining out. If I need to cut food with it, I will. It does a great job of that. I don't eat at really expensive posh restaurants, and trying to impress anyone with my pocket knife is not something that enters my mind when I carry one.

I don’t think anyone said they use their own cutlery in a restaurant to impress anyone

it’s more about using nice tools and having an affinity of cutlery

I really don’t understand the buying of things to impress people and for those that say than you wouldn’t post pics etc if you were not showing off.... again it’s more in sharing a like of something you enjoy with like people

I agree.... really, how impressed could a stranger be if they happen to see another diner cutting a steak with a pocket knife. Woo-Hoo! And how anyone might think that doing so in a nice restaurant is going to impress anyone, I don't get. You use your own knife for the pleasure and joy of putting a nice sharp blade to good use. No one else is going to be "impressed" by that - but you can enjoy the results. :)

Lastly, if one is afraid to cut a steak on a plate, for fear of dulling their knife... that knife best belongs on a shelf in a sealed glass case, not in your pocket. Knives are meant to be used, not worshipped.

I agree if they won’t cut a piece of meat on a plate they must be very afraid of sharpening a knife

Stroping and sharpening after use is most enjoyable, to me anyway! Ive found that stroping
my knives has become therapeutic!

I think the issue with using a nice knife on a plate is more about why do something that will knowingly dull the edge quickly when you are likely provided a perfectly suitable knife for the task.

Provided steak knives are often not much more than barely adequate to tear through the meat. Yes, it is likely that they can get the job done, but...

If you cut with some care, you're not likely to do much dulling. With a very sharp knife you don't need to slam the blade down into the plate and drag it like a gorilla would.

Ultimately, this is not about need, so much as it is about enjoyment and desire. Do what you enjoy and desire.

Been my experience that if a fancy eatery hands you cutlery that won't cut through your meal it's a not that fancy.

And if you're really sure it's fancy and you still can't cut the steak then you should have ordered the chicken.

The fancy eatery knife is likely able to tear through a steak, though perhaps not as smoothly or cleanly as one might like.

Many of the choices we make in today's modern world, as the use of one's own knife to slice a fine steak, is about desire, not need.

Id suggest it isn't a fancy eatery is a butter knife can't cut through it fancy eatery better cook my steak right and it should be tender juicy and nearly melt.

If you went to a fancy place and they didn't cook the meal properly would you speak up or would you just take it home and reheat it because your lifestyle doesn't let you use an oven enough?

If it's a good restaurant the cutlery will be sufficient to cut never mind a fancy one.

If you just like using your knife to cut food in restaurants that's fine. It's a free world and no one needs to construct an elaborate scenario where that's the only choice.

Haha! That's FUNNY! But you're going crazy places with that post. I don't see where anyone is "constructing an elaborate scenario where that's (using your own knife) the only choice." Show us, please?

It would be a rare fine restaurant where the steak knife is NOT sufficient to cut (or tear) through a steak.

I'd use my own knife because I would enjoy doing so, and it is likely quite a bit sharper than a restaurant steak knife. That's the fun of it. :)

Pretty simple, isn't it! ;) Perhaps you need to read, again, what you quoted me as saying: "Many of the choices we make in today's modern world, as the use of one's own knife to slice a fine steak, is about desire, not need."

Be sure to announce that to the waiter when you order your steak and butter knife. Haha! :D Enjoy the fun of it all!

Life is about details

how involved you want to get with these details is up to the individual

Some people can use an ugly stick to catch fish

some want to use a custom graphite rod

some can go buy an over the counter rifle and used mixed factory ammo

some like a custom built gun and meticulously hand loaded cartridges

it goes on and on

some can get by with a cheap knife etc etc etc

There is no right or wrong just people’s preferences on the tools they use

I also use my steak knife on cheap steak and chicken fried steak :)

this thread has prompted me to add a nice eating fork to my steak knife and chopstick collection :)
