Would you use your own classy gents folder at a fancy restaurant?

I would use my own tasteful-looking folder steak knife at any restaurant, without any qualms. Not to try to make a statement to anyone else, but simply to enjoy the pleasure of fine slicing with a personal knife that I enjoy having and using! Used discreetly, it's doubtful anyone else in the restaurant would notice, let alone care.

In fact, I have a nice dinner-out planned for next week and will be taking my newly arriving KAI 5700 to that dinner for it's inaugural implementation! I bought this knife specifically for this purpose. Looking forward to using it then.

If it's a "fancy" restaurant, using your own tableware would be considered an insult to the restaurant and it's management. But it appears a lot of people don't care, as long as they get to use their knives in public where everyone can see how cool they are and be impressed.

And don't tell me that restaurant knives are too dull. In the extremely rare case where you get a dull one, send it back.

It's just my opinion, but this shows a lack of class. You may all feel free to jump on me now!

You assume much, especially with "lack of class".
In my experience, no matter how "fancy" the restaurant pretends to be, the cutlery is (almost) always poor. Your experience is different ? Nice !
I could say giving the customers dull knives is an insult to the clients and to the meat. But I won't because I know many restaurant owners, sharpen kitchen knives for some of them, eat at their tables often and I know the reasons behind the measly cutlery :
- Safety for the clients (think of the kids !!!) and the dishwashing crew. Can't argue with that.
- Nice knives get stolen. It's amazing how even crappy tableware can get stolen in a restaurant. Once, I made a proposal for a set of steak knives (20 tables / 80 knives), low price, entry level quality, but good looking (non serrated blade and a polished wood handle with the option included of engraving the handle with the joint's name...). "Yowzah ! No, never, they will disappear instantly !" was the answer. So, in the end, the customers get what they deserve.
And last, but not least, when I decide to use my knife, I open it stealthily so that no one notices and then I lay it openly beside my plate. Waiters or the owner may notice, I never had one negative comment. At most, "Hey, I see you got your own tools". And that's it.
But if somebody, whoever, got upset by my knife, I would instantly put it away to put people at ease. And tear up my steak with the provided cutlery. In the end, the joy of cutting meat isn't worth spoiling a friendly atmosphere.

There is so much wrong in this post, I won't waste my time in responding to each point.

That is silly

I’ve grown up in the restaurant business and still to this day work in setting up many restaurants and while I’ve seen some decent steak knives in places it is not the norm

maybe out of the gate they are fairly sharp but they don’t stay that way long and most are serrated which I’m not keen on

people speak of class

class is the way you carry yourself and the way you treat the people around you .....especially the servers

not to sound like an elitist but when I go to a restaurant usually the owner or chef if they know I’m there will come out and visit

I’ve never been asked ..... why did you discreetly pull your small folding steak knife from your suit jacket pocket and cut your meat

if using your own cutlery makes that 100 dollar steak more enjoyable for you than so be it and hopefully the true merits of being classy carry you through

This is an excellent choice and I think you will like it

I’m using the shun version and I like it very much

Wow, you seem pretty personally insulted that many of us would prefer to use our own knives over the dull steak razors which are provided by restaurants. Odd. That kinda shows a lack of class in itself.

I think is quite funny how easily some people get their panties all up in a wad over things that are no big deal at all. Sucks to be so tightly wound as that. Same thing being played out in the nation's capital right now. Insane.

Well, you know, it's a knife forum. So, yeah, some people feel strongly about their knives and, also, using them. I see no tightly wound panties, so far, but a rather insulting comment ("lack of class", really ? There are mainly gentlemen talking here) was answered in a definite way, but quite politely, I must say.

I'm going to end this right now.

A truly fine restaurant requires no sharp cutlery. All meats, poultry and seafood will be fork tender or cut for you.

:);):(:mad::thumbsdown::confused::thumbsup::cool::p:D:eek::oops::rolleyes:o_O:poop:

marchone marchone I appreciate the humor... but this is just not true. Some meat, even well cooked, or simmered for hours, requires a sharp knife. Recently, I ate a delicious grilled squid, definitely tender, but I was happy to cut it with my knife. The meal was better for it. Fortunately, nobody called me out on my "lack of class". That would have meant a duel, immediately. Right after coffee and cognac, that is.

I worked at Chicago Chop House for a summer when in college.

I was always more offended when someone asked for A-1 Steak sauce than when someone pulled out a pocketknife.

amen to that

also, i am uncouth, and it doesn't bother me to be such

How it is an insult to a restaurant if someone prefers using their own steak knife I do not understand. This is the kind of thing that reflects being very tightly wound. Matters such as this are of no significance. It’s a wiggly world. Get over it.

Not an insult to the restaurant, please read all of my posts. I'm actually saying quite the opposite... What is unclear to you ? The world is wiggly as hell, I don't care much about it and I can find my way. And my pants lie well, warm and straight down as they should. Thanks for asking. Have a nice evening.
