"Yeller" Handles

Wow Anthony, I had no idea yella handles went that far back!!!

Nive knife by the way.

Thanks Jackknife,

Actually, it was your thoughtful question in this thread a ways back that prompted me to look and research when(what era) yellow celluloid may have been released as a handle material for knives and what other practical and/or commercial uses it might have been used for. After reading quite a bit of knife references and old catalog reprints I thought it may have been the 1930's or 1940's as I stated in here in a previous post... Well, I dove into my knife stash after that and came up with 4 knives that seem to pre-date that idea..

The Henry Sears & Son knife was clearly the earliest of the group and so I submitted it for my friend Bernard Levine in his Identification forum here in BF and low and behold he was able to shed some light on this type of vintage Yellow celluloid.. BR Levine never ceases to amaze me. He is one of the :cool:est cats in the litter. :) ..

Sunny, that is a great old celluloid. I think it would be very interesting to watch them make some of that wonderful patterned material. I have no idea what it would entail...

+1!. I would like to see the how the old Yellow Celluloid was produced as well!

Anthony

Thank you Anthony for your search into the history of this old timey scale material.

Blues, that is a gorgious handful of knife!

I think that softer color is actually better than a real yellow, and I like yellow. This one looks more like old mellow ivory that's got that not quite golden patina of age. Very nice.

Thanks, Carl. I like it a lot and it takes a wicked edge. Liked it so much I bought its twin in stag!:cool:

Almost looks like an Antique Ivory. I like it

1970's vintage Eye Brand 4" Trapper. Rehandled after original celluloid scales off-gassed causing damage to blades. (A wonderful gift from a fellow forum member and friend). This steel takes a fine edge!:

Kinda weird today. I was going through all my "stuff" and I found the 8OTY box from the knife I had given my grandfather many years ago.
I didn't even know I had it.
Now it has a place to rest when I'm not carrying it. ;)

to be honest - I'm just not sure. I think it's made by a small company in Kentucky, but it'll take someone wiser than me...

Anyone know about the standard knife co.? Who made them? looks like Queen maybe?Knuembk, where did you buy it?

IIRC, there is a small knife maker called Bluegrass ____ in Kentucky. And these were some pretty good quality knives they made few years back....
Maybe Bluegrass depot? I'll have to scrounge around for more info - it's been a few years.
