You know what would be awesome? A BladeForums Special Edition Becker BK16.

Just waiting to hear from KaBar as to what this sort of thing would require, what costs would be, etc. I've talked to Ethan twice about it, and he's thinks it's a fantastic idea. Moose, naturally, loves it, but you know Moose, he's easy to please.

And don't forget sexy!

I am in on this... O1 would be awesome but it is also pretty common on bushcraft knives so I would be okay with anything really! A2 or D2 would be sweet.

Yeah, to be honest, it's looking like S30 / S35 or D2 would be the choice here. Stonewash finish, Micarta handles, small laser mark, something classy. Just have to find out pricing and piece requirements.

I will ad this about the steels.

As a guy who has built a few knives recently out of both D2 and S30V I can tell you that-

1) In terms of stain resistance, there is not two degrees worth of real world difference between the two. D2's rust resistance is VERY underrated, IMHO. All stainless will rust and you have to REALLY work at rusting D2.

2) With Kabar's heat treatment I actually would trust D2 to hold up better in in Becker type scenarios in terms of chipping etc.

The other benefit of D2 is the steel sources and heat treat protocalls are already in place at Kabar with the D2. Really, the only "new" thing they would have to work on is the Stonewash finish And I believe they are already using that anyway.

Actually, D2 BK16,17 and 15 would sell well as a regular production knife in stonewashed D2. So would any of the little Neckers.

Yep, its all about the differentiation from a normal production version for me, so some sort of stainless, in the saber grind with some sort of laser mark on the tang, would be perfect.

Not sure what the best choice of stainless would be, but since I have no experience there (other than some of the cheaper stainless steels that have no application here), I'll defer to "those who know".

And like you said, now its down to the timing and the pricing.

1095 with a different colored coating, say OD.
Keep the costs down so more people will get in on it.

S30(5)V and D2 are both good choices. S3xV in FFG would be a unique Becker. D2 in saber would be a quintessential Becker. They did the proto in saber and the regular production knife will be full flat ground.

I'd like FFG in either case. Stainless for uniqueness and D2 only if the cost difference is really significant, so that more can get in on this.

Oh, and by the way, Spark. Once you're done shipping these out get to work on a Bladeforums Spyderco Manix XL in an exotic steel.

So, if I am to understand you correctly Guyon you want -

NO GIANT ETCHING ON THE BLADES

maybe this? :)

KaBar has D2, works it, knows it. good times. they know S30V too, but that is probably more $$$ than we might want?

KaBar knows stonewash too. they have the tumbler machine of doom, and already have used it. i THINK they ran the BK77s through it, to good effect, and of course, the BK10 LEs went through it and are wondrous. they iirc throw most knives in there enough to knock off the rough edges from lasering, but MORE finish makes a nice surface.

want something REALLY cool? convince them to coat the D2 in Titanium Nitridge, or similar, if the cost is not too high. Kershaw does this on some things, and i think it's MARVELOUS. rust/staining issues? not no more.

bring it on!

So yesterday I'm cruising the Kershaw forum looking for a database for some stats on an Outcast I'm selling (no database over there - wtf??), and run across another thread by Spark testing the waters on a BF Skyline in S30V, and I'm like DAMN! Hell yeah I want one of those!

Not sure how I missed this thread yesterday, but I just now saw it, and again I'm like DAMN! Hell yeah I want one of those!

The Outcast I'm selling right now is a D2 knife. Love it, just decided to lighten the load after jumpin' on the BF BK4. Already up to my ears in choppers, but anyway, as others have said, D2 is a fine knife steel when HT'ed right.

I'm also completely sold on the SxxV line of stainless steels. I have several folders made out of it and they are all real performers. My only real regret in life is that I didn't jump on the BK77, which was just wrapping up when I landed in this forum last year about this time. However, these steels are quite a bit more expensive if I'm not mistaken, so one of the higher Chromium-content carbon steels might be the best choice for the widest appeal.

I personally was stoked to see Spark suggest a polished finish, but I had little doubt that would be shot down by the responses in short order. To the extent that that suggestion has any life left in it, it has my vote. Not hatin' the stonewash idea at all though.

So Spark, you have any other BF LE's in the works that I have to save and/or sell my kidneys for?

Anyway, I'm on this one (and probably the Skyline too) like white on rice!

Since most beckerheads are known for their modding, what about doing something under the handles like laser etch the numbers or the person's forum name on the tang or something.

Great idea, but I'd really only be buying it for the upgrade steel, not because it had BladeForums on it. Polished or stonewashed or coated wouldn't really matter to me,I'd beat the snot out of it anyway, and if it was coated,I would strip it.I wasn't really impressed with the addition of the "first production run" laser engraving on the SMKW tweeners the other night, which is why I didn't buy one.I'll wait and get the standard model. So yeah, upgrade steel,I'm in,not what gets written on the side.
