Hey Daizee. You got me lookin at my vice now. Its a 4in jaw star gold. You know anything about them. It was a freebe.

Hm, nope, never heard of 'em. When I google it up like a smartass I come up empty, except for some other guy asking the same thing.

I bet you have flea markets littered with Rock Island tools out there.
In our neck of the woods the good stuff we get is Parker, Browne & Sharpe, JT Slocomb, Starrett, etc. (Good ol' Gun Valley and the Providence area toolmakers)

So, Daizee...why is it I live 20 miles from where your Parker was cast, and I have a vice made in Mass???

This old boy has had a busy life, now I use it several times a week as my primary.

This is MY Parker, but it's obviously a much later model.

Notice the rough milling marks with no attempt to clean them up. Terrible. This one is the spare that lives under the bench.

Nice collection!
Athol is the home of Starrett!

What's the model number of the Parker?
Those look like blanchard grinding marks to me.

Can't tell. On the opposite side from the shown label is just a blank panel. I'm not near it now -- I'll check and get back to you later if I find anything.

I don't know if that is the correct color. I may have painted it as a kid, although it is in remarkably great condition owing to many years under a bench sitting unused.

The old family business used Davenport screw machines (made in Rochester) and there was a workbench the length of one of the walls with a vice like these every 8 feet or so. Pedestal grinders tucked lots of places for sharpening the cutting tools. Kept the Bridgeport, a surface grinder and the Clausing 13" metal lathe when I sold off the production machinery in 1987.

I've been meaning to get a good vice to mount on my reloading bench. Nothing very big. All I need one for is for when I'm tearing a rifle apart or doing other small things.

manly vices guys I'm out of the loop for sure, something I've been looking to pick up but they're soooo expensive and really don't want to buy a cheap one...

Thanks, but I really don't need a vice this big. I like that it's my great-grandpa's though, that's most of why I keep it around.

so, how does one restore these vises? remove rust? make it nice?

Ahhhh, so now you guys have me searching the bay for a vise to clean up and put on my bench. Its looking like I should be able to get on for a pretty decent price.

maybe so but shipping is going to kill you... I'd check DregsList...

I've restored a lot of things in my life but never a vice, hmmm...

I found some with reasonable shipping, around 20 bucks. I might have to get to some auction sales or something.

Tore my Savage 30-06 down last night to just the barrel and action. I'm gonna bed it into its new laminate stock on my next days off. I'll be ordering a new trigger for it soon. I think I'll also get a new mount for it and hopefully some new glass in the next few months. Not sure what I'm gonna go with yet, but I'm thinking 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest.

Good to hear that you are getting ready for Nov 16. I need to get out and test some rounds that I worked up for my 270 Winny. Right now, I using 130 gr Hornady Interbonds with 54.3 gr of H4350. I'm getting about 1 MOA at a 100 yards with my old Ruger 77. (not counting the occasional flyers, which are mostly my fault )
