Your Castaway Knife

It is a Gossman made of S7 steel. I believe it is the one he shot with his .41 magnum just to prove he could.:D
Perhaps Scott will be along and explain further.

Actually that pic you posted is made with O1 but I did have a similar blade made with S7 that never was finished and was used as a test blade. Long story but yes that S7 blade withstood a hit from a 41 mag.

My mistake.:o
I was going by memory and the name on the pic was s7. Oops.
I'm still hoping it will accidentally show up in my mailbox some day. I imagine it is pretty well bombproof.

You could be right. I did make several with S7 but it's been quite sometime since I've used that steel. I don't get many requests for it. Thanks for the compliment.

I've been called a lot of things but "right" has never been one of them.
Whatever steel you use, I'd carry one of your knives anywhere.

Seeing as how the box washes ashore and you never had to pay for the knife i'd probably hope for a Busse Battle Mistress.
Hopefully with sharpening stone and a multitool/SAK (Spirit or Swisschamp) in a pouch attach to the Busse sheath, lol!

If it had to be a knife i own or could possibly afford to buy then a Becker Companion or a Rat Rc-5.
(But really i would want an axe/hatchet in that scenario, plus an Enzo and a Multitool).

I'm surprised no hobbyist here have tried to reproduce the Cast Away skate axe! Should be worthy of a thread at least!
:D

This one, of course with the same edge :D

Awesome, but a Nuclear Meltdown is a little bit more than I'd need.

Does Busse make a Hot Muggy Day Battle Mistress? or maybe a My Car Overheated Battle Mistress? My Dell Laptop Crashed Again Battle Mistress maybe? My Shoelace Came Untied Battle Mistress could also be a useful addition to my collection.

;)

I'm gonna catch some hell for this post.:o

LOL...there are serveral battle mistresses available, i wouldn't be surprised if he did make all those battle mistress varients.

Hey Scott, a little off topic but what do think of S7 steel, I know it makes a good chopping blade but how do you rate it as far as holding an edge compared to 1095 and O1 etc ?

Not from me. I entirely agree. Guess I'm gonna get flamed, too.

In order to maintain shock/impact resistance, 57RC is about the highest you can go. It will temper to 59RC but you loose some impact resistance. It won't hold an edge as well as 1095, A2 or O1.
IMO, S7 is much better suited for impact tools rather then knives. It would be excellent for axe heads but it is an expensive steel compared to the 10X steels commonly used for axes.

Thanks Scott, I have only ever had one knife made of S7 and your comments seem to back up my findings ! I sold the knife !!!!

This is one reason I don't really use it anymore. It's cool seeing a blade shot or bent in a vise, but I would rather have a steel that is better at edge holding.

A cbt cg fbm is light in hand. I think this would be my choice if I were the Castaway.
It'll crack a coconut, cut thick stuff for shelter, dig a hole, protect me from cannibals:confused::eek:, clear a path, scratch my back, is tough as nails but light to carry well and you can choke up on it for detail work.
