A few weeks ago I turned the ambrosia maple bowl.
Today I turned the mahogany blank .
Still needs a couple coats of tung oil, engrave the back and buff/polish in a few days once the oil is fully dry.

Absolutely beautiful work, Dan!
Oh come on now!? You must be part robot! Incredible stitching, John!

This was a little project from a few weeks back. I spent a few hours cleaning up this knife to get it ready to sell.
Beauty! Now that it’s cleaned up I bet it is hard to sell - at least that’s what usually happens to me!

I love seeing the grand variety of skills and interests on display here. I have been re-hanging some axes - this one is a Plumb Boy’s Axe rehung for a good friend on its original handle

I’ve been restoring a batch of wedges I picked up on a popular online auction site.

and this evening I went foraging for ramps with my dog and a 1940s Camillus hawkbill and found way more than I know what to do with!

This bowl came very close to never happening. Black locust is a very hard wood so I though I would try a different angle with my bowl gouge to speed up the process .
I got a nasty catch that send the bowl flying off the lathe and broke part of the tenon used to hold it.
It was difficult to remount and center it again and it came smaller than what it would have been.
( I am going to watch some you tube videos on proper wood turning technique :) )

Very nice work on a tricky project Dan, the bowl turned out great. I've never turned wood but can attest to the hardness of well seasoned black locust. I've used it often in bow, (not bowl) making and even the sapwood is tough as nails.
I imagine keeping the thin border of bark around the rim of your bowl requires some skill and patience given that your removing some very hard wood around the more brittle bark.:thumbsup::)

The bowl is absolutely beautiful. Perfect backdrop for the daily totin’ picture. I have plenty black locust on our property that I will have to put to the side and save for the days when I want to grow my patience. Beautiful project!

Thank you for the kind word guys !
I find wood turning very therapeutic ( unless you get a nasty catch :) )
My set up in my backyard shed is very basic but I enjoy retreating in my little man cave once in a while.

About the black locust piece of wood.
About 9 years ago or so a nurse supervisor at the hospital I used to work for brought me this big branch from her property and put it in a remote hallway of the hospital until I took it home at the end of my shift.
I turned a few bowls from it and left a few left over blanks in my shed. I stopped turning for years but resumed again last year.
Here is a little video from about 9 years ago turning a piece of black locust from this same branch ( of course, wood was green and not so hard like it was yesterday ). A couple of experienced turners saw it and helped me with tips on how to improve technique etc ( I was also warned not to tap against the headstock as it's hard on the bearings )
