Your EDC and INTERESTING REASONS THEY ARE YOUR CHOICES?)?

I carry a BM 520 Because it's a tank (toughest knife I've owned) and blade shape is perfect for me... I like the wide flat spydercoish style! Very very nice!

Soon it will be riding with a custom Marlowe Bali... Because I love balis and on top of the fact that balis are fun to flip they are still very practicle!

I have to say that this has been one of the most interesting EDC threads ever...Most of them are just lists of what people carry. This has been great :)

My current EDC's are:

M.O.D. Hornet. It's compact and lightweight. The 3" 154CM blade keeps a great edge and is a good length for all around applications. The smooth action, tight lock-up, and handle design are great in SD situations. And it looks good!

Spyderco Spydercard. Has been with me everyday for the last 5 months. It lies dormant in my wallet taking the role of back-up EDC. Cuts like dream. I wouldn't feel ill euipped if this was my only knife.

Inova X1. Great inexpensive personal light. Very cool looking as well.

Itoya Zoom rollerball pen. Nice writer and improvised kobutan. Solid alumininum cap and barrel.

Zippo. Because nothing is better.

EDC is a toss up between Spyderco Dodo and Wegner Mouse 2..because they are G10 scales, small and have great steel.

Why? Because it's in my genetic memory to be prepared for a challenge at any moment. Wether they are needed or not my EDC's remind me that my life should be considered one big adventure.

Steel?

1) Spyderco Military because it carries like a small knife and opens into a big (ish) knife. It can be opened with cold fingers of gloved hands. It can get gummed up with sand and be cleaned under the tap. The small amount of rust spotting from the salt water can be cleaned off easily. It has a needle like point but still a fairly strong tip. It is more popular at the fire shed than me. If I ever decide to get the S30V version I know 5 bush firefighters who will buy it. Why they won't just get their own puzzles me.

2) SAK Soldier for it's other little gadjets and because it's the only knife people see me carrying when I'm in town. I also keep this blade scalpel sharp.

Light?

Tiny Princeton tech single LED on my keychain. Besides the obvious needs at night it's amazing the amount of times during the day I have to peer into a dark little corner. The two deadliest things on our continent are snakes and spyders.

Flame?

Zippo wrapped in bike tube. Once a year I also smoke a cigar but I am never sure when this urge will strike me so need to be ready. Like a samurai my Zippo prepares all year for the one time it is needed. I also occasionally need a steady flame to melt rope ends.

Cord?

A coiled length of paracord attached to my keys. Haven't actually used this but you never know (see beginning of post)

This has been a very informative thread. I always SEE people's stuff and wonder how often they need some of the great stuff they carry and why. THIS THREAD ROCKS! As for me:

-Spyderco/Lum FB Tanto
I always seem to be eating some piece of fruit and hate to think what all that fruit juice and gunk would do to my axis locks and hinges. Boron Carbide and orange peels don't play nice together I found out... It's just so damn nice too.

-BM 710 PE/806D2
These guys open envelopes(even those pesky sticky-flap tyvek ones) and boxes no problem. I like the one hand open and closing and the general STURDY feeling, sharpness and design of both these knives make the so versatile. I can't decide which one I like more so I rotate them or carry 'em both. I think I baby them too much...

-BM 942S
This thing is just a nifty knife and I just got back my 0666 of 1000 pre-production one. This may sound weird but, I think it is cursed. Right after I got rid of it I broke my arm, and right after my buddy[I traded it to] started to neglect it in favor of another, the dude I got it back FROM dropped MY 806D2 into his foot, through his shoe and broke the tip off it in his foot. D2??? Yup. He needed stitches, and gushed a surprising amount of blood. I just let Mr. 942S ride along with me to appease it... You never know.

-Extrema Ratio MPC folder
I could cut and bash my way out of an elevator if I need to with this baby! I am claustrophobic and have to spend A LOT of time in elevators all day at work. It really is security in the pocket; able to handle just about anything you could throw at it... Just in case the world goes to $hite when I am away from home.

-LM Wave(with adapter) and Spyderench
Handles all my 'tool' needs that my Topeak bike tool doesn't. I can do anything with these and they have little blades on 'em... Repairs throughout the day are common for me and 'colleagues'

-Surefire 6p(before the anti-roll bezel) and Streamlight Twin-task 1L
I admit it. I AM AFRAID of the dark.:( Buildings, elevators and other places I go all day can get pretty dark if the power goes out, and I have been stuck in elevators before. Both great lights and run on 123's. The 6p is in my BOB in my messenger bag while the 1L is in my pocket, so I am never with out light, and have three lighting options. I am looking to get an ARCaaa too when they are available again.

That is most of the stuff y'all would be interested in. Additionaly, I always carry a book, my sketchbook & pens, BOB stuff(I'm a paranoid freak that lives in the city), a nextel & pager(my work leashes), a cellphone, 'The best hand pump ever'-the topeak RoadMorph, bike stuff(patches, tubes, etc.), GOOD cigs., a BIC lighter, paracord, a mini U-lock, water, instant oatmeal, instant soup, tea bags and I think y'all probably have had enough. It's not as much as it seems even though I left a lot out... :)

LM Crunch, Original Supertool, Micra, Juice S2, Spyderco S/S Harpy. Yes, I know its a load but can't help myself.
Crunch - vise grip and locking tools.
Supertool - Saw and also locking tools.
Micra - Scissors
Juice - Nice overall and love the design
Harpy - Intimidating blade

Victorinox Yeoman, has everything you need, and nothing you don't (except maybe that multi-purpose hook, which I've used once in 3 years!). Scissors, caplifter/flathead, Phillips, magnifying glass, eyeglass screwdrive, pic, tweezers (modified to pointed tips), pin and pen. I must use that thing 3-4 times a day. I also carry a CRK mnandi. I keep the SAK scapel sharp like others, and use it for basic cutting chores. If I need something, a little heavier or for quicker access I use the mnandi. I also carry a couple of alcohol wipes to clean the blades up (wonders for removing packing tape residue). That way, if I have to cut up my kids hotdog, I know the blade is at least a clean as a kitchen knife, so my wife doesn't freak out!;) Both are very low profile, sheeple friendly and get the job done.

Strider SMF- General cutting.

Case Seahorse Whittler- package opening (and copenhagen lids)

Surefire E1- For when its to dark to see, silly.

Leatherman Wave (in laptop case)- frequently need to fix crap in out broken down facility.

Pocket watch- don't like wrist watches and I have started collecting old watch fobs. Seemed like a match.

Springfield Champion .45- for mad cows. (people have been trying to convince me they don't foam at the mouth and rampage down the streets, but they are the same folks who kittens are cute and not deranged psychotic killers in training)

Victorinox Bantam SAK with alox handles...

Why?

I don't notice it at all in my pocket.
Nice blade grind/length with good steel.
Bottle/can opener.
Screw driver.
Attractive and doesn't scare people.

As an EDC it does everything I need since I am a desk jockey. For ABCLDC (Alternate Beyond City Limits Day Carry) I have hatchets, folding saws, leathermans, Grohmanns and a Randall.

Well I have been stripped of my collection...but my current EDC:

In the waistband: Kershaw Vapor - It was the best quality knife in the 3 inch range they sold at Wal Mart.

In right pocket: Buck 303 Poly Pearl Stockman - It's a great quality little slipjoint. Excellent fit and finish. Great walk and talk.

Do any of you have pictures?
I am very impressed with the reasoning of your choices - this could be the more imformative of threads to help others learn more about their choices! Keep it up Folks!!

MarcAngel - the Ben Franklin Quote?:p

Oakley XX Metal sunglasses. After breaking my nose 3 times, with their floating nose piece, they're the only glasses that I can wear for more than an hour at a time.

Strider SMF (#16). All heavy duty cutting, i.e. small branches, pvc pipe, cutting a javalina from underneath a car (happened Wednesday night).

Swisstool X. When I carry a multi-tool, I want it to feel like a tool, plus I like being to lock the blades and the pliers are definitely heavy duty.

Korth Model 1 Bali. I like playing with it when nothing is going on at work.

MT CTII. Once again I like playing with it when nothing else is going on. Also have used it to cut a diamondback out of a tennis net, without hurting the snake.

Surefire Z3 Combat light. I don't like carrying the issued Maglites because they're too big/heavy and the Z3 throws out a much brighter light when answering a house alarm after dark.

Mission Wallet with a MOP/engraved/damascus bladed slipjoint. I love the wallet as I get in/out of my patrol truck 15-20 times an hour and since I carry it in my front pocket I don't get a sore area on my rear. Plus it carries a knife. The slipjoint is for when I need to be careful as to what I pull out. Mainly for opening envelopes and packages.

Phil Hartsfield. This is my emergency back-up knife worn as a necker.

I've been carrying a Benchmade cqc 7 for many years. (until I lost it in august) The knife was a gift from a friend and even if it was chisel ground it served me well for those years.

Actually it's my custom Fred Perrin Lagriffe.
Hard wooden handle, carbon steel forged blade, chisel convex edge drop point...

So easy to maintain hyper sharp !
(the kind of edge which can make hairs flies from your skin and then cut your skin!)

It 's in my denim watch pocket and pairs with another knife like the Fred Perrin Streetbowie, the M2 nim Cyb or Ronin or BM806...

cheers

JM

AFter carrying a Ken onion Chive for a while, I fell in love with the look, feel and weight of the William Henry CF Kestrel. It fits well in my suit jacket or pants pocket during the workweek. Additionally, the materials & workmanship are top knotch. But, it was the weight, or lack there of that really got me.

There are lots of good info. here - I am suprised that there are as many SAK as there are.
How about more pictures - lets make this the "learn about kife' thread that will be so helpfull to others! Keep em coming -

THIS IS NOT ONLY A WHAT DO YOU CARRY - WHAT IS YOUR ECD - WHAT IS IN YOUR POCKETS - BUT W H Y IS THIS YOUR CHOICE?

WHY DO YOU CARRY WHAT YOU DO? WHY DID YOU BUY THAT KNIVE? WHAT ARE THE REASONS YOU LIKE A PARTICULAR KNIFE - WHAT IS YOUR TASTE - VALUES?:p

My EDC and choices...
I rotate between a large cocobolo Sebenza, a DMKnives Instigator 2, a JW Smith mini-Scimitar, and a Darrel Ralph Madd Maxx 2 dress knife (it is black with pearl inlays).
My other carry items are a Busse Assault Shaker, a Neil Blackwood credit card knife, a Surefire E2e, and a Zippo.

The Sebenza and JW Smith are good all around knives for slicing, being hollow ground, with enough point for details. They are very light, with a firm clip so they never fall from a pocket. They also look friendly and don't draw stares. They both fit my hand well.

The Instigator is my heavy duty folder and I only carry it in jeans because it is heavy. It is solid and good for heavier cutting. The Maxx is a classic, excellent design. It's my dress knife, and blends in with black slacks. The stiletto blade is good for everything from snipping a thread off the hem of a date's evening dress or slicing a dinner roll. :) It is also very light with a secure clip.

The Assault Shaker does the nasty work because I know it won't chip. I keep it in a horizontal weak side sheath for reverse draw if necessary. It's also a great prybar for stuck elevator doors, and makes a great bottle opener :)

The Blackwood credit card knife is there
for emergencies and is very light and concealable.

The Surefire and Zippo are reliable and always useful. Don't leave home without them, especially if I can't have a knife.

So overall, I light a light, ergonomic, strong folder. None of these knives have any play or wiggle, and all have secure locks and clips. They're also a little fancy looking, I'm not saying looks never matter. But I won't buy a pretty knife that's not capable. I've bought and broken, lost, and worn out so many knives that I prefer an expensive strong one that I can trust and won't be careless with.

I am amazed at the variety of choices you folks have mentioned; even more amazed at the level of thought that went into making your choices.

I am spending alot of time, reading your puts and then searching the web to learn and see your selections

easYRider - spam and tobasco!??!?!
