You had to tinkle on the parade, didn't you?

Some knives are expressly made as weapons. We all know it. Saying otherwise is denial.

Some of can be ok with knives that are weapons. It doesn't mean it's our primary option for defense.
If you don't want to play with the class, watch from the bleachers.

The FS is a great classic!

A baseball bat.

Knives are not very good weapons.

Big Mike

Lol, good choice, I have a bat and baseball mitt leaning against the wall in the garage and its not because I like baseball. The mitt makes it look innocent.
Jeeps get and Big Mike, I'm sure you're both handy with a bat. Not the question. Just go to Prac Tac and preach weapon superiority. This is a knife like thread, not a best tool post.

Love both pieces. What gun is that??
Those are nasty looking!

Jill Jackson, you rock as always!!

Figure all knives can sorta be deployed as a weapon
But some designated weapons just can't fit into the general purpose designation.
I figure the only knife that can't be used for anything else but...
Has to be the Spyderco civilian.
The f-s commando daggers,
The CS push daggers and spike.
The letter openers...

If you were referring to me, I'm not tinkling on anything. It was a tribute to a friend of mine who's passed on. Yes, Dave could have killed you with a Leatherman micra. Probably even barehanded:

Uh, sorry to hear that. Hope you and your cats can work things out. Also, I will pray for your toe.

No, it wasn't. It was in reference to Jeepster's first post:
I have no plans to have a knife for defense or offense as mine are tools and not weapons, I have a pistol for self defense.

I have been in a knife fight years ago as a kid and when using a knife both parties get cut up with arms flying. My cuts were not as severe as my opponents but my weapon cut me almost as much as it cut him. When you swing to hit them and miss it is sometimes your opposite arm that gets hit.

I chose my pistol as my defense or offense weapon.

If I did buy a fighting knife it would be a sword, probably a Gladius.

I figure: Scissor kick, scissor kick, sixteen rabbit-punches, up, right, up, right, b, a, select, start, then this:

I have a USMC fighting knife and could take it on hikes, but never have. My favorite knife over the years for taking on hikes -- just in case -- has been the Buck 639 V. I notice that most of the knives mentioned are pretty much restricted to a downward strike. The USMC fighting knife has the aft 2 inches of the tip sharpened permitting an upward thrust if needed. The Buck 639V permits that as well. [I know double-edge knives permit that as well, but the shape of the Ka-Bar & Buck 639V have a slight upward hook which the double-edge knives don't seem to have.]

A hiker strives to go as light as possible and while the USMC Ka-Bar fighting knife is more formidable than the Buck 639V, it isn't if the hiker isn't willing to carry it. The Ka-Bar with sheath weighs 15 ounces. The Buck 639V with sheath weighs slightly over 9 ounces. The length is also a consideration: how much knife do you want dangling by your side and getting in the way of your camera case? The Ka-Bar fighting knife in its sheath is 13 3/4 inches long. The Buck 639V in its sheath is 11 1/2 inches long. Blade comparison? 6 1/2 inches for the Ka-Bar to 5 1/8 for the Buck 639V.

I've recently rethought all my hiking gear -- everything I take on a hike and finally got around to the knives. If I wanted to get as light as possible I have several folders that would work, but I no longer feel comfortable with a folder. More and more coyotes have moved into the area where I take my dogs to run off leash. I don't mind them. They keep the casual hiker out and they've never bothered us. I take my lightest gun along, a Walther 22 and have only fired it once in the direction of a coyote -- above its head to encourage it to leave my Ridgeback alone. It seemed to be taunting him perhaps to get him to chase it away from a den. After about the 4th or 5th time of my Ridgeback chasing the coyote off and then returning, to be followed by the coyote with a bit more taunting, I fired a shot above its head into some trees and it then let us get on with our hike. Which is to say I don't consider them a big threat but it is nice to have something ready at hand that could deal with coyotes or anything else that might come down from the mountains if my Walther jammed or seemed uncomfortably inadequate.

In my search for a lightweight fixed-bladed knife that is like the knives I've grown comfortable with I recently bought two Ka-Bar knives that can best be described as small versions of the Ka-Bar fighting knife. The first one I bought looks just like a small version of the Ka-Bar fighting knife except the back edge or false edge (I think it is called) of the tip isn't sharpened and it has a little over an inch of corrugation on the blade near the hilt. The blade which is 4 3/4 inches long has USMC stamped in it. While I was used to the leather handle on the Ka-Bar fighting knife, that same set up on the smaller knife seemed slippery and I didn't feel confident with it so I bought a different version, this with a black soft material, something like the material on the handle of my Buck 639V. It has a smooth blade and while the back of the tip is false and not sharpened it looked as though it could be sharpened if I spent enough time on it.

Why not just stick with the Buck 639V if I'm so happy with it? It has been out of production for a long time and mine is beat up and disreputable. I bought another one claiming to be "mint" on eBay and while the sheath might have qualified for that definition, the knife definitely wouldn't. Ka-Bar on the other hand has the little Ka-Bar fighting knife replicas or Utility-Knife versions still in production so I'm going to work on getting used to them. I hike three times a week in good weather (being retired and only modestly decrepit) so I'll be putting putting these knives and a few others to the test -- not a severe test hopefully but just to compare the feel of them to see which ones are the most comfortable to carry while at the same time giving me confidence that if things go awry I won't be defenseless.

Alright. Good enough. Just wanted to make sure!

My post really was meant as a tribute to an old friend who passed away, under very tragic circumstances. It really was a crying shame what happened. I really don't want to go into it. Dave's passing may have come before your time here on the forum, but I guarantee he is sorely missed by some, including me.

I said "Leatherman micra" because I'm almost positive the mighty Vampire Gerbil would have said just that. Small, swift, efficient, deadly, and handy to boot!

Well, carry on fellas, and Dave (VG), I miss you brother. I need a beer, and a couple tissues. Haven't thought about him in a while.
