Your First Spyderco

My first spyderco was a plain stainless steel dragonfly. It is truly a great knife and goes with me everywhere.

First Spyderco I ordered was the black/DLC Para 2. That was late 2011 when they were like hens teeth, and it was 4 months on back order before I got it.
So I got me a Manix 2 XL while I was waiting, my first Spyderco in hand. The XL is my favorite Manix, awesome work knife, wouldn't part with it. Definitely better with a deep carry clip too.
I recall thinking that with these 2 Spyderco's I was covered.

5 years later I got this many, and a couple more. It's like they put opiates in the steel or something.

I bought an original Standard from the Cutlery Shoppe in 1986 and carried it until 1990 when it was replace with a Rescue. I carried that until 1994 when it was replaced as my main EDC by a PS Endura. The Rescue went into my bunker gear pocket where it still lives and works today and the Endura is still part of my rotation.

Call me simple, but I am new to Spyderco and my first will be either an Endura or a Delica either one in FFG. After that will be a Manix 2 in S90V if I can afford it.

A Rescue Clipit I rescued from a pile of garbage when cleaning out a TDY barracks. I'd loved the first Spyderco I saw, but didn't think I'd ever be able to afford one.

I have several now. The old Rescue is usually on emergency car knife duty. I have a Sage 2 in my pocket. My wife has a Native. My son has a CaraCara. There are a couple more in my sock drawer - a Tenacious, and a Dragonfly.

My 1st Spydee was Chokwe...

Now I have Manix 2 XL, Vallotton SubHilt x2, Cricket, Paramilitary2, Southard, Yojimbo 2, Lady Bugs x3, Clipitool C169, several Delicas and Tenacious and Orange Dragonfly on it's way ... It's a sickness!!! Thinking about Bushcraft now. Hehehe

My first was a Native FRN in 2008; black one for me and pink one for my wife. Both of us have numerous Spydies now and finally were able to visit the factory two weeks ago :D

Wow Charlie!!! :D And here I thought I was one of the "old timers" in the Spyder-Community being I got my very first one in 1995 :o I would to have loved to started collecting Spyders that far back>>I'm just thinking of the head start I would have had. I might have even been in the same league as our dear beloved Brother "The DEACON" who for all intent and purposes is the "Mayor Of Spyderville" Heck maybe we ought to run you against him in the next election :D

I didn't even know that Spyderco even existed until about 1992-93 or thereabout. I had seen their stuff in at least 50 magazines before I ever took the plunge and got my first one in 1995. I run into a few guys who have been at this since the 80s but they are far and few between for sure. It seems like in the late 2000 decade around 08-09 is when they really caught fire as a very respected knife company.

But that's very heads-up of you to have had such a sharp eye for quality to have noticed them that early in the game. I used to have one of those STANDARD models with a G-10 handle and I deeply regret trading it.

I just ordered my first Spyderco a Delica 4 Model C11PGRE. Should arrive next Tuesday. :D

My first Spyderco was also my first quality knife, a Centofante III in 2005. Since given away to someone else as their first quality knife. I always seem to come back to Spyderco for EDC knives. Currently using a blue Domino, but have gone through three waved Delicas as well (mostly lost).

My first spydie was a endura and that led quickly to getting a delica. Like a lot of us I carry at least two knives. The delica is always one of them. My current small carry is a spydie roadie. It is a awesome little pocket scalpel. I have tried to carry a case peanut in the past but just did not feel comfortable with it. The roadie is about the same size but it is a very comfortable little knife.

Do not really remember the first Spyderco. Do remember the integrated plastic pocket-clips on my early one's.

C17 Catcherman in AUS-8 from the mid 90's I still have. I spent a lot of time on coastal rivers fly fishing in the 80's and 90's and that Catcherman decisively replaced other folding fillet knives previously carried.

Like your references, I kinda had a issue with the appearance (did not really appeal to me) of Spyderco knives in general. However ..., get them in hand and to task, and then opinions related to appearance quickly became overruled in consideration of ease and production performance. The Catcherman was a tool that just plain worked really well for me. Other Spyderco of the time were also just plain great tools of ergonomic functionality.

Sometime later we got flippers, bearing pivots, etc. I struggler to understand the traction these have had, but accept that we all may choose for reasons beyond functionality of the tool, and that's ok ;-)

Regards,

Regards,

I got a question for you "SPEY"? Is your AUS-8 Catcherman model one of the fully serrated ones? Because I have one of those myself and the AUS-8 model I have is full Spyderedged and it's one of my most used knives period. I've had the combo edged AUS-8 Catcherman models but for a plain edge or combo edge the later MBS-26 model seems really nice as well as the Sprint Run H-1 model with the nuclear green handle.

I've had several Catcherman models over the years and they are great hard use knives and one of the best food knives I've ever used. Just curious because I just don't run into too many people that still have any of those AUS-8 Catcherman models.

JD Spydo,

Black FRN P/S Edge (Plain/SpyderEdge 70-75% Plain).

I prefer the major fwd section plain-edge for fillet work. The short SpyderEdge (serrated) is very aggressive and cuts easily through backbones on large salmon (50 pounders).

I would be interested to know how many folks who bought that toxic green USN version from a few years ago knew they were buying a fillet knife ... aka "Catcherman" ... Really surprised when that knife was released with the original style blade grind (hollow) vs. the previous short run with flat ground primary bevels AND slightly thinner blade steel. I would think the USN version with a flat grind combined with full SpyderEdge would have been really interested combination (sort of a combo-model of the original SpyderEdge Massad Ayoob and a reverse Civilian) vs. a hollow-grind fillet knife, in a slightly thicker (stronger/stiffer) blade. Was confusing to me how popular this model was with non fisherman ... :-/

My first Spyderco was a Michael Walker linerlock with alox/anodized aluminum (?) scales. A joy to carry and use. Sadly lost many years ago. Still have an unused Walker carbon fiber made in Switzerland.

My first was a PM2. Took me a while to warm up to it and eventually I did. I carry a lot of traditionals as well and most of the time I pair them with a modern folder. I never felt the need to get another Spyderco since the PM2 is such an icon (very well deserved by the way). Now I really want a native 5 or a delica. I hear such great things about every model and how great the fit and finish is, so I need to get one with a little smaller blade. That native 5 is callin my name...

My first two Spydercos.

I still own them but not use them, as my taste has evolved.
Manix is too thick to be a good slicer.
Stretch2 would be great if it is a frame lock (or compression lock) knife.
My current favorite Spyderco is PM2 Blurple S110V, as a companion to my Boker Exskelibur I, a fantastic slicer.
