Your knife at the restaurant...

Seems to be a few "sensitive" fellows in this thread (talk about "prissy"). Nevertheless, I for one am very happy that we live in a society with no other worry than how we are going to overcome the inadequate steak knife provided to us by a restaurant. So, do what you want. No need to whine, accuse, or insult just because someone made you feel "stupid", and they recognize that we like to find ways to play with out toys (I include myself in "we", by the way).

No whining here (that's another sub-forum entirely).
It would take alot more than some annonymous internet yobs to make me feel stupid, and people's ideas of "manners" vary enough to be entirely not my concern.

Hell, if I want to feel stupid, I'll look at my paycheck, not this thread.

Seriously? I don't understand why you guys have a bug up your asses about using a pocket knife to cut up your food at a restaurant. It's one's own prerogative. You both must live in a magical land where restaurants actually provide a sharp instrument to cut your food. I don't live there and when I go out to eat I get handed a knife that hasn't been able to properly slice meat since 1996. Instead, I get to smash and tear my food apart with what is the equivelant of the side of a spoon. No thanks, I'll just use the knife in my pocket. Not because I want to play with it, or wave it around for all to see, or even to try and impress anyone. I use it because it's there and it cuts better than the dull piece of metal they put on the table and call a knife.

The idea of carrying your own flatware or dishes is probably one of the most inane things I've seen written on this forum. This is a forum for what? Knives you say? Not the flatware and fine china EDC forum? I carry a knife everyday and I use it for cutting (imagine that). Unfortunately, I don't EDC a set of silverware, a plate, and a bowl. If I did then I would probably use them at a restaurant. You two can feel free to smash and tear your food apart with some ridiculous butter knife, not me. Since this arguing is all for naught as my reasoning won't sway you and nothing anyone says will sway me, I will take my leave of this thread.

Sounds like you need to take a class on how to use a knife if you can't seem to cut your food with the supplied tableware at restaurants........ Since 1996.... And haven't figured out how to do it on your own yet. ;)

That or have someone else cut it for you....

And no I am not kidding......

Hi guys-

Just to be clear, I have no problem using my own knife at a restaurant or in any other situation where I find it necessary.

I welcome my fellow knife fanatics to pull their knives out and cut away at their culinary offerings.

I just have never, ever, felt like I HAD to do so on any food I have ordered.

best regards -

If I start needing to use my knife at a restaurant then I will go elsewhere...at home...you can cut my finished steaks with your fork or a butter knife....

If the steak knives are inadequate at the restaurant, I'll use one of my folders that I EDC. No problem and I don't care what people think. I don't carry a special fixed blade to restaurants thinking I might need it to slice my steak.

At home I generally use inexpensive Vic serrated knifes for steaks and such. They're good for just about anything. I keep a number of different sizes on hand including both serrated and plain edges.

Maybe this is a hint to manufacturers to produce folders that resemble steak knives. Maybe?

opinel's look like steak knives.

i didn't use my knife at a restaurant today, but at a pastry shop. my daughter and i got two slices of pie (different kinds) and i used my knife to cut each in half so we got a taste of both.

on another note, a woman saw me and said enthusiastically "now that's a knife to cut pie with" and i smiled and said "yes it is". by the way, this wasn't in new york.

I read this yesterday and I can't stop laughing..till now:D today I was in restaurant with my family to eat.....when..
This thread just pomp up in my mind & I was laughing and taking pic at the same time, so I take the pic of the knife used in restaurant....
Too hilarious to think that I will go on the restaurant and start to use my folder..............:yawn::D

I won't eat steaks with less knife:D

It's only strange if it isn't titanium.;)

What WOULD be strange would be if you actually EDCed a small kettle and then never used it.
That would just be bizarre.
Sprint run, non flamed Ti, Peel Ply carbon fiber handle...ahh, now someone else will end up wanting one ;)

I whipped out my victorinox tinker at a restaurant once because the knife the waitress gave me was very dull. I didn't notice anyone looking at me weird, not that I care anyway.

That is not about somebody else looking. I do not dump some trash on the street because somebody would be looking - that is something that I do not do. And another thing I do not do - looking as somebody else makes a fool of himself. That always makes me very uncomfortable. I usually pretend that I do not see it. I do not know about anybody else, not that I care anyway. ;)

Wow, you must be some kind of Superman...using that steak knife to cut through your steak. I'm impressed...although I do think the fibers of the meat look slightly torn, instead of sliced which probably changed the flavor and feel of the meat once the steak made it to your mouth. Way to overcome!

"Every time I order a steak in a restaurant, no matter how fine the restaurant, I am appalled by the quality of the steak knife. For years, I have simply used my pocketknife instead."

How long do you really think the knives would really last if they provided excellent quality knives at restaurants before they disappeared.....

People will steal just about anything that isn't bolted down with one way bolts....

I dunno, that's a quote from AG. I did notice the tableware was rather unimpressive at a French restaurant where I had a pretty nice filet de boeuf au poivre.
