So, I've been reading threads recently about new comers with small-ish collections, and been taking a hard look at my own personal collection seeing what I could part with and not feel like I'll regret it later. Upon counting, I came up with the number of 95 knives. That's right, 95 (not even including victorinox knives or my multi-tools). That's 88 folding knives and 7 fixed blades, all amassed in roughly 3 years.

Being a bit shocked at this number, I'm curious as to how big everyone else's collection is, as well as the age of collection.

I try to keep my collection small. Usually only have about 10 knives at any given time. While I could certainly see how I could get to 100 knives I hope that never happens. I wouldn't even know where to keep them all?

That's what pelican cases are for :D

31. And that includes a few (4 actually) I am actively trying to sell.

Oh, I've been buying knives for 10 years or so, but I think my collecting has really gotten specific and serious in the past 2.

You made me curious so I went downstairs and counted...

I have 49 the majority of which I bought over the past 18 months...I am not even close to finished...I have no desire to sell any of them...

Cheers/bg

I know but I wouldn't know what to do with all those pelican cases. I like to keep my knives locked in my safe and it isn't large enough to store pelican cases. When you talking about that volume of knives that is a lot of money to just have sitting out somewhere in a case.

Looks like 23, give or take some I may not be remembering.

6 kitchen knives
12 fixed blades
7 folders (same edc since Dec 2010).

Been a member here since mid/late 2010 if memory serves, but always had a few knives before that.

I haven't bought a knife for myself in a couple of years (~2.5) as I haven't felt the need/desire. But I'm not a "collector" either. I've got a few that I never use that I should get rid of actually.

And, it's not like there is a "correct" number of knives anyway. As long as you manage your money to still meet your obligations and other interests/needs, I wouldnt worry about it too much.

My current tally is 15.
  • 3 that see regular use (EDC, alternate EDC, favorite traditional)
  • 2 multitools in the truck
  • 2 for backpacking, camping, and hiking
  • 2 in my bugout bag
  • 1 multitool at my desk for small chores
  • 5 kept for sentimental reasons or because I haven't decided to sell them yet
I think the most I've ever owned at once was something like 35, but I've held steady at around 12-17 for some time now.

I tend to buy knives, use them to see what they're like, explore a new pattern/lock/steel/etc., or audition them as potential EDCs, and then sell them if they don't suit me. I enjoy that aspect of the hobby, I just don't tend to hold onto many knives.

I'd have to wait till I get home but I think somewhere near 15.

Just started again getting back in to knives only about 10 months old

Total knives.....that's fixed, and folders.....without an exact head count I'm guessing is less than 25.

Currently 3 folders, 1 lost SAK, and 1 vintage stockman. I have tried 100’s of folders over the past 5 or so years. It’s been a great way to figure out what exactly suits my needs or wants.

I don't know how many knives (non-kitchen knives as I don't count them as part of my knife accumulation). I have added 4 knives so far this year and they were all intended as possible users. I have several tubs of mixed boxes containing knives, empty knife boxes, and so forth. I tend to keep my knives that I am not using (but might use or at least fondle) in plastic boxes that will handle about 20 knives each. I generally don't include machetes or machete-like blades as part of my knife accumulation. They are all for use when I need them. I have a number of old ones lying around my garage in the nooks and crannies.
