Your knife collection size

Just a quick look, not 100% accurate. Thought that I had more knives and I probably do but have not written them down.

Approx 45 knives at a cost of $13,500. Started "collecting" in 2017. 1st knife I was around 7yrs old, 2nd knife was around 34 yrs old, started to collect around 56 yrs old.

That depends on what you call "really nice knives". I think Benchmades and Spydercos are really nice. Before I got into buying knives just because I wanted them, I had about 5 knives and I functioned just fine.

I guess I meant more along the lines of this.... I currently have a nice leatherman multi-tool, an Olamic Busker as my “light duty” EDC, and one day I’d like to add a Medford as a heavy duty option. I’d be happy with only those knives, and would not see a need for anything additional.

16... in 2 months, which means I’m annualizing at 96 a year . . . Rut Row!

* does a folding switch blade pocket comb that I once picked up at “South of the Border” count? ;)

not2sharp not2sharp - can you fill us in on that interesting photo, are they WWII knives "liberated" from POW's ? Cool photo, thanks for sharing.

That is a file photo of knives donated by civilians at the beginning of WWII for U.S. troops. It was reproduced in M.H Cole US Military knives (book III) and was first published in Life Magazine (Feb 8th, 1943). the "Save a Life with a Knife Committee" had collected about 7,500 knives at that point.

I have had a couple dozens mid tech knives and my current "collection" is only 4 knives.
a Spyderco exclusive Yojimbo 2 with CF/S90v, a Spyderco exclusive CF/M390 Military, a CRK Inkosi with Insingo blade and CF exclusive, and a Shiro Hati with M390.
I'm not planing on adding anything anytime soon but maybe a fixed blade in the future.

On my first go-'round, back in the mid eighties, I bought a few Schrades. I still have them all. Then back in 2011 I bought a SAK Recruit and a Bear Grylls Compact Scout knife, and that got the fire smouldering again albeit rather slowly.

Then back in January 2017 I started buying knives again. I count around 33 with a mix of Benchmades, Spydercos, Bucks, Case slippy's , a ZT, a Kershaw, a Grohmann folder and a Cold Steel, along with a few cheap folders and a couple of cheap fixed blades that I use for making kindling in the winter. I haven't got to the point of quitting yet...

Oh, and I'm not planning on selling any.

Around 150 but who’s counting, and every so often I think it’s time to thin the herd. But, when I look at each one, I justify why I need to keep it.
That perfectly sums up the state of my collection. I haven’t counted in a while but 150 or so seems about right. Every time I consider selling one I rationalize why I need to hang on to it.

I haven't counted them but probably around 50 or so. I am starting to compile an Excel database for all of them, tracking sharpening angle, purchase price/date, serial/model number, etc. Is this anal or what?

This photo was taken almost a year ago, and a lot has gone in and out since then, but this should give a general idea of the size of the collection:

I started accumulating at age 6.

I started "collecting", i.e., buying with purpose in mind in 1975.

The estimated count is currently north of 3600.

This count includes swords, short swords, bayonets, axes, hatchets, tomahawks, knives of multiple genres, and machetes.

The sharps currently reside in tubs, cabinets, shelves, drawers, closets, hanging on walls, tucked away in vehicles, etc., with 40 to 50 lying around at any given time.

I am impressed by the fact some of y'all have and keep so many. I feel like I only have so much adoration and fondling energy to spread around, so I try and keep the collection smaller. Also my collecting has gotten progressively more expensive, so I really have to be sure about buying and keeping something. Having things I don't really love ties up cash I could use for something I do really "need".

I really respect folks that keep themselves to a minimum number of knives they really like for EDC. It seems they form a unique bond with what they have.

There are people that enjoy collecting for the sake of collecting, like every variation of a certain model for instance. I respect that too.

I’m new to knives as a hobby and still figuring things out. I have way more than I need but still have more to explore too. Perhaps one day I’ll bond so strongly with a half-dozen knives that I’ll be ready to unload the other knives I really like, but don’t quite reach that supreme status. I obviously haven’t gotten there yet—but I’m getting closer and my acquisition pace has slowed dramatically.

In the end, I’d like to wind up somewhere in between the minimalist and collector groups. Ideally I’d have a dozen quality blades for EDC and specialty uses coupled with a small collection or two of fondlers within a certain genre. But like I said above, I may never get there.
