Your knife collection size

I counted the other day for this thread and got to 102, then my Massdrop Gent showed up.

All my knives are folders, and most of those of the modern variety, with a few traditionals/slippies/Buck 110-style thrown in. I got rid of most of the cheap/starter knives, but keep a few for beaters. The array begins with a couple dozen Spydies, another couple dozen BMKs, and a half-dozen ZTs, moving up through a half-dozen lionSTEELS, half-dozen Hinderers, 8 CRKs, and a half-dozen Shiros. I have ones or twos of Les George, Olamic, Cheburkov, Al Mar, Giant Mouse, RJ Martin, and a few others.

Along the way, I've sold or traded a couple dozen, and have been trying lately to buy just what I might carry and use. I do have a couple of individual collections in with my lot--all the Sages and numerous Tenaci--as well as a soft spot for old-school BMKs, and a few drawer queens. I've gotten better at letting go of knives I like but don't/won't use.

I feel pretty good and collection-size stable about the current number, but seem to recall feeling the same way at around 50 not all that long ago. :rolleyes:
 
I’m surprised at some of the low numbers. When I joined (just last month) I made the assumption that the community would be collectors, or at least people with lots of knives.

I never really considered myself a knife collector until about a year ago. Even now, it’s probably more accurate to call me a knife appreciator/hoarder. Although, maybe that’s simply a more honest definition of “collecting.”

Up until a couple of years ago, most of my knives had been given to me, and most were inexpensive, and usually lower quality.

Currently, I’m up to 66 of what I’d call “production” knives, meaning branded knives that can be purchased today (with some exceptions for limited editions). Three fixed blade, 10 multi tool (SAK, Leatherman) and the rest evenly divided between modern folders and traditional folders. My tastes leans towards functional and simple, and away from tactical and/or ornate.

I also have another 10-20 in a random box, mostly cheap or no-name one offs that aren’t terribly valuable or collectible.

For many years the collection has been all but complete; yet, there is a nagging sense that something is still missing...and it seems to grow ever larger and more consuming. :D

I had of TON of knives that I kinda liked, now I have a few that I really love.

I find myself going the quality over quantity way now.

I only buy things I really really want now.

I try to keep it around 10-20 max.
